  Do you use anything with pagan origins?

  i'm conversing with a jw about the "pagan origin" issue.

  i'm familiar with the fact that the names of the months and days of the week, wedding rings, and baptism all have pagan origins and are accepted for use by jw's.

  can you guys think of anything else that jw's partake of or accept or use that has questionable origins?

  Can you guys think of anything else that JW's partake of or accept or use that has questionable origins?

  I have only found one more. Covering a yawn was originally meant to keep the Devil from sneaking inside, but today most people only do it for good manners. Should you stop covering your yawns because of demonic origins?

  I'm thinking there are many everyday items, like clothing cut a certain way, or household tools or decorations, or figures of speech, or personal grooming that are now used by JW's without thought of their origins.

  Great comments, keep em coming.

  It's not the dedication to God that I consider the problem. It's the fact that once you're an "official" lifetime member, you can't just walk away. You've agreed to play by their rules for the rest of your life. And the only way to break free is the df/da/fade route. It's sad when an adult makes that decision and then wishes he hadn't. But a child has no idea what it means, other than it's just what you do to show your love for Jehovah, or sometimes just because your friends are doing it, or because of pressure from others.

  It's a non-retractable, lifelong commitment you can't get out of easily. No matter what religion my children one day decide to be, they're going to have to be adults to commit to anything.

  Were you still a "believer" when you left?

  i know many of you here left for reasons other than doctrinal.

  lack of love, treated badly, the burden of life as a jw, etc.

  at the time you left (or were kicked out), did you still think it was god's organization, or were you already convinced it wasn't?.

  I know many of you here left for reasons other than doctrinal. Lack of love, treated badly, the burden of life as a JW, etc. At the time you left (or were kicked out), did you still think it was God's organization, or were you already convinced it wasn't?

  I ask because leaving was one of the hardest things I've ever done, and at the time I already knew it wasn't the "truth". I can't imagine the aweful pain and hopelessness of someone who feels they have to leave but believes they're leaving God's people and any hope of God's approval. My heart goes out to you guys and I hope you've found peace.

  i'm looking for a photocopy of a letter sent from the governing body to traveling overseers dated september 1, 1980. among other things, it included the following quotation.. "keep in mind that to be disfellowshipped, an apostate does not have to be a promoter of apostate views.".

  any ideas?

  i have read so many posts relating conversations or correspondance with jw's who you think just don't "get it".

  after presenting what you're sure is hard evidence against their organization, they roll their eyes and shoo you away, and you walk away thinking that they're so brainwashed they'll never see reality.. i don't remember every petty negative comment i ever heard about the org, but i'm pretty sure i remember every issue of substance i came across.

  a householder at the door explaining john 1:1, a whispered conversation about the content of c of c, an inactive person saying they'll never come back because they discovered the "truth" wasn't the truth, seeing for myself changing doctrine.

After presenting what you're sure is hard evidence against their organization, they roll their eyes and shoo you away, and you walk away thinking that they're so brainwashed they'll never see reality.

  I don't remember every petty negative comment I ever heard about the org, but I'm pretty sure I remember every issue of substance I came across. A householder at the door explaining John 1:1, a whispered conversation about the content of C of C, an inactive person saying they'll never come back because they discovered the "truth" wasn't the truth, seeing for myself changing doctrine.

  All these things were mulled over for days. They didn't of themselves change my thinking, but they were all noted and filed away in my brain, until the time came when the file got too big to ignore, and I took it out to piece it all together. It took over 30 years, but I finally "got it".

  So if someone blocks your every point with a typical JW defense and you leave thinking it would make more sense reasoning with a brick wall, you may have given that person something to think about, maybe even in years to come.

  Why aren't you guys working?

  as a stay-at-home mom, i can occasionally find a few minutes every few days to play on the computer, but the amount of activity on this forum during us working hours is pretty surprising.

  folks from other parts of the world notwithstanding, how are you american members able to post during work hours?.
