they are only interested in the issue in so far as they can use it to promote white anti-witness propaganda, whereas a high percentage of loyal witnesses are black.

i know that all the terms of my topic are debatable: apostacy is a witness term of derogation; apostates probably are mostly liberal and not racist (essentially); and they are not a 'movement' in any case.

Yes, sorry, the statement i made was incorrect. It's the opening of the nasal tract, and most British accents close the nasal passage producing their vowels only through their mouths... Nasal vowels (like french "en", "on" and "an") and nasal consonents (m, n and ng) are produced by the opening of the nasal tract...

Mulan: It took me several days when I was there to get used to "air con" (air conditioning), "car park" isn't abbreviated, but I hadn't heard it before and thought it sounded funny, like a park for cars, "biz ad" (business administration), "gen man" (general manager).

This is very interesting, the Japanese also say eakon (air-con), apaato (apartment), depaato (department store), nega (photo negative), terebi (television), nooto (notebook), baito (work, 'arbeit' in german), radi-kase (radio-cassette player).

"Flash" puzzles: BLOODY DIFFICULT!!

i came across these two flash "puzzles" the other day.

they're really interesting but bloody hard to do... they work on the principle of cause and effect and one wrong move can block your progress without you even noticing it... .

i've been at the first one for days and i still haven't solved it although i think i'm quite close... i thought of myself as a logical thinker coz i'm good at the mensa questions, but this one has got me tearing out my hair.

It also appears that the bird needs to lay an egg on the catapult and then the egg needs to fly to the land mind and blow it up, but I can't get it to lay. I tried squirting it with the cloud, but still nothing.

I am still trying to figure out the mine thing with the dude on the top shelf. And the fish. And the little butterfly thingy. And the box thing. Oh, and the fan / portcullis thing.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT ! !

(Beware of the ~~crossed-out~~ stuff ! !)

~~Shining the light towards the "eggs" will make it notice them and pick them up.~~

If you squirt the bird with the "egg" with the second cloud just before the bird reaches it, the bird will drop the egg onto the catapult. Squirting the first cloud three times, and then quickly firing the catapult will burn the airborne "egg" with "acid rain" and cause it to burn the flag on the side of the building, which in turn will explode the bomb, allowing the man at the top to go past without getting blown up... click on him to make him fall down the stairs.

When the man at the top falls down the stairs, in order to allow him to pass under the suspended box, the moth needs to be sucked into the fan, which distracts the man operating the second lever and allows the courageous (but now anachronistically named) "man at the top" to pass under the box without another risk to his precious life...

~~The man now at the uppermost lever can then safely release the box and allow the fish to escape, and the man at the middle lever can then pull it and allow the fish to fall into the water...~~

I think though, that this stage of the puzzle needs to be carried out a bit later... you have to try and work out how the stuff under the catapult works. This is the most tricky part... I think an "egg" needs to be dropped onto all that aerial / antenna stuff directly under the first cloud. I also think that the fisherman needs to catch and eat the fish and that the blob is pivotal in exploding the bomb under the water. The "wave machine" in the bottom left is useful in both these cases.

I suggest trying the first Haptoon first, it's much easier, after almost three days i've figured out the basic principles... I think ...... and i'm well on the way to understanding the principles of the second puzzle but just can't seem to get the timing right...

The objective in both, is to light the two torches (above the doorways) and ultimately activate the "Stargate". (In the first one it's in the top right, and in the second its underground). It really is impossible

p.s. The first puzzle doesn't seem to work in "Internet Explorer", but it seems ok in "Mozilla" and "Firefox"

I guess our ears become accustomed to certain levels and tones of speech. I've had two British professors in the past, and I couldn't hear a word they said! It was like they spoke in a quiet mumble.
To me, some British accents sound extremely loud and nasal (I'm not sure what region it's from, but movies usually portray people with this accent as street urchins or lower-class citizens, like the Weasleys in Harry Potter).

Nasalisation means the closing of the nasal tract while pronouning vowels or (the utterance of sounds characterized by resonance produced through the nose). Basically the nasal sounds vibrate more and make the sound intrinsically louder in both frequency and wavelength. This is why Brits think Americans are loud and Americans think Brits are inaudible. Technically, no British accents are nasal and in standard British "Recieved Pronunciation" (RP) and most regional accents of the UK, no nasalisation takes place. Some fake "Hollywood" British accents however are nasal in reference sometimes to colonial times where the accent is percieved as quite posh, effected, and droning, but in reality few if any people speak like that today. Some of the films you've watched showing "street urchins or lower-class citizens" actually show quite the opposite of nasalisation; the opening of the nasal tract and decreased vocal murmering/vibration produces a "purer" vowel sound.
In American English (AE), most speakers (90%) tend to tighten their vowels somewhat, particularly but not exclusively around nasal consonents such as m, n and ng (eg. "cancer", bank", bang"... In transcription, phoneticians often draw a "tilde" (~) over the vowels in the transcript of an American speaker to indicate his/her increased nasality.

Another characteristic very common in AE, and usually not found at all in RP, is nasalisation, which Morris-Wilson explains as a nasal quality given to vowel sounds preceding a nasal consonant (mainly m, n or ng). This is often referred to as ‘nasal twang’, which is “one of the features of American English which many English people find disagreeable: they consider it to be indicative of laziness, untidiness, slovenliness, etc."

I find the American pronunciation of "route" hilarious, and in complete disregard for the etymological roots of the word.

To many British ears, the American over-pronunciation of "r" is ear-grating and makes pronunciation of the word stilting and overly nasal. In (British) English, the post-vocalic "r" simply serves to modify the previous vowel sound.

Its quite funny though when Welsh or Cornish people, pronounce an "r" where there is none there in spelling. eg. "Old Ma Evans" becomes "Old Mar Revans". (Flash-back to the song "Oy've go' a brand new combine 'arvister").

The common southern US pratctice of using diphthongs and tripthongs where simple monopthongs will do is quite amusing and incomprehensible.

When i'm travelling on the french métro, i often have to pass though some quite touristy areas. If there is a bunch of American tourists on the train, you can hear them a mile away even if they're trying to whisper. I never did understand that, but i think maybe the nasality of their accent resonates more than others. The British tourists are quite loud too in comparison with all the other quieter, more civilised people, but nowhere near as loud as the Americans (who often sound like a load of people incessantly imitating "Anne" from Little Britain, "eh eh eeeeh", lol).

English Z sounds like zed not zee.

Yes, this one really annoys me... zeeeeeee... think the Americans just made it up so it would make the "alphabet-song" rhyme...

The English word "zed" comes from the original french word for the letter "zède" which in turn is from the Latin "zeta"... the word ultimately comes from Greek (Z, ?)"zeta".

It is commonly accepted that the Greek zeta is derived from the Phonecians letter "zayin" (meaning "sword") which looked somewhat like a capital " I " with bars at the top and bottom.

I was stunned to silence at the simplicity and logic of your posts Alleymom. I can't express how grateful i am to have this simple explanation to print out and show to people who need to be reasoned with useing the KISS approach.

The issue of 1914 being a pivotal date was always something that kept me from freeing myself mentally from the WT society. I reasoned that even if they got the event wrong, at least the date was right, and something big DID happen in 1914. I soon began to realise that the society just writes things to suit themselves so that they can decieve their "sheep" into believing that they are the only one's who have been chosen.

As an example, let's say that in 1990 a religious man said that Bible prophecy indicated that the world would come to an end in 2001 and that Satan would battle with the Christ and the Christ would win. Let us also say that this man and his followers published this warning far and wide here in the U.S. September 11, 2001 would make this man a prophet even though the world did not end and the Christ did not visibly battle with Satan. Fundamentalist Christians would say that yes the "world came to an end" because the world we knew has ended and is now changed forever. They could also say Christ (Christianity) did and is doing battle with Satan the father of all evil and evil doers and 2001 marked the beginning of the last fight to rid the world of the evils of terrorism the last enemy to peace on earth.

Although i'm not quite sure where you stand on the WT society IW, i sure enjoyed your analogy because it was something i was thinking of posting when i hadn't yet realised you'd already done it. Religions and cults have been choosing dates for Armageddon from far back in history. The WTS themselves have chosen many dates even before 1914. With World War One happenning in that year, they hit the jackpot and manipulated 1914 to add weight to their being "appointed over all of Christ's belongings". This claim is so audacious that i can hardly find the appropriate superlative adjective to describe it.

This thread needs to be kept up, up, up so that newer ones can see it and forever abolish any guilt for disagreeing with the unscholarly and unreasonable WTS.
