Smoke gets In Your Eyes.
by Englishman ini was just wondering, how many of us here took up smoking after we left the witnesses?
i have to admit that it was just about the very first thing that i did when i finally received that sumbeam of enlightenment that jw's were simply not anything special.
i drove out to a country pub, bought 2 panatellas and a half of red barrel, and spluttered my way through my first cigar n' pint.

I tried smoking but it's not for me. I hate how addictive it is - fortunately i never smoked enough to even come close to addiction. a few of my acquaintances smoke and it's kind of irritating because everywhere we go they HAVE to have a smoke, and lord don't let them run out because then we have stop whatever we're doing and drive 20 miles out of our way so they can get a cigarette. Friggin annoying as all get-out.
all you smokers, have you seen the movie "The Insiders?" 'tis a must-see flic. This world is a crazy place - they say weed is bad for ya and make it illegal, yet they purposely put huge amounts of nicotine in cigarettes to get people addicted. The whole cigarette industry is NOT about tobacco, it's about the addictive quality and quantities of nicotine so that people will continue to buy them. It's all about SUCKING THE MONEY OUT OF YOUR POCKET.
I say most "vices" can be enjoyable in moderation, but don't let it run your life. Addictions suck. Just my motto though.

could your son be gay???
by searchfothetruth inhow would you react if doctors come up with a test that could determine if your son would turn out to be gay when he grows up?
how would you react?
i personally, having two young sons myself, would not want to know.

Yeah, I think people turn gay as a lifestyle choice, I don't agree that people are born gay. Do you?
I used to feel the same way. When i moved to California, the first person I ever worked for here was gay. So I asked him if he feels he was born that way or is it merely a "preference." He said he's never liked girls. He said he was never really interested in sex or girls until the age of 14 and he found that all his friends were talking about girls and he just didn't view them in the same way. He started developing feelings for guys but he didn't dare say anything about it because he was afraid of the abuse he'd get from family and friends. So he kept it in for several years - in his senior year he went out with a girl just to prove to his friends he was straight, but didn't enjoy it one bit. It only lasted 1 week or so...friends started teasing him that he was gay, and he denied it, but he knew he was. He went through this inner-turmoil thing and finally when he went to college he "came out."
I asked him if he's turned on in any way by girls, and he said he acknowledges their beauty but is not sexually attracted to them at ALL. I couldn't believe it, it just went against everything I had ever known or experienced. But that was his story and he said it with such natural conviction that i couldn't help but believe him. I'd never been around gay people before and found it very strange and unnatural, but after meeting several more through the years, I've found his story to be quite common. A lot of them DO like the opposite sex as well but prefer the same sex. However others really don't like the opposite sex, and if they ever had a thing with the opposite sex, it was only in an attempt to fit in with the "in" crowd and not get picked on for being gay.
It's difficult to accept, but...I can't help but think that there's something genetically missing that gives them the tendency to be sexually attracted to the same sex.
For the life of me i can't figure out how this quote business works. Everytime I paste a quote I get stuck in the dern thing and can't get out of it, then when i finally do, it highlights my words in this manilla folder color. HELP!!!

To spank or not to spank?
by Nowhere ini had a conversation with an active witness from the usa lately.
and when talking about child upbringing he stated that some children need a spank sometimes.
of course i was upset because of that, and i didn't thought witnesses was that stupid.

Okay people, listen.
Anyone who thinks spanking is an act of violence obviously shouldn't spank their kids.
Spanking is not intended to be violent - it's intended to teach a lesson not to do it again. If done properly, it leaves no marks physically, emotionally or psychologically and the pain is temporary - very temporary. The lesson learned, however, is hopefully far more reaching. Yes, you can be sued for striking an individual, but honestly, and everyone knows it, most people use that as a monetary gain. If someone slaps you, the only thing that is really hurt is your pride and you know it.
Some kids never need a spanking. Some do.
A parent and only the parent is the ONLY one in a position to determine what method is best for their child. Whichever method they choose should NOT be abusive, whether that be physically or verbally. Discipline can be administered with love, whether that be verbally or physically, and that comes from one who has received and administered loving discipline from authoratative figures.
Kids that are spanked do not necessarily grow up to be violent. I was spanked, often times i felt it was borderline abuse, but nonetheless, i'm the least-violent adult ever now.
Comparing a spanking to slapping a co-worker or spouse who doesn't listen is totally absurd - there's NO COMPARISON. It's something directly associated with the upbringing of children. They aren't old enough to determine right from wrong, and so they need an authoritative figure to teach this to them, and spanking is a way to enforce it if necessary.
So a parent should use his or her intuition and discretion in determining what form of discipline is best for their child. Anyone who thinks they have the right to state that a parent is abusing their kid if they spank them (properly <on the buttocks> and unabusively) needs to be quiet, for they are not in a position to make such a statement.

Any Brooklyn Bethelites from '93 - '98?
by back2dafront ini guess i should introduce myself for i am a new poster-boy :-) my name is jason howard and i currently reside in santa cruz, california.
i spent the first 24 years of my life as a jw, starting in danbury, ct, then to fayetteville & charlotte, nc, and finally brooklyn, bethel, where finally all of my negative inner thoughts and feelings were confirmed.
(from the ages of 14-24 i always felt something just didn't add up with the organization, but i could never quite put a finger on it) i spent my career at bethel in the brooklyn warehouse/purchasing departments and worked with some really great individuals.

Matthew 23 and the WTS

23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices--mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law--justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
The "more important matters of the law" have been forgotten. People are judged based on hard and fast rules with little or no consideration for personal circumstances. Instead they follow petty rules - beards, shirt colors, skirt lengths, hairstyles etc.
SHIRT COLORS!!! I totally forgot about that! I vaguely remember someone at Bethel talking about how brothers should wear white shirts when giving talks. I remember looking at him and thinking "who the heck really cares?" So many senseless RULES - I mean, what is it, a Board of Directors meeting at a National Bank or something? The wardrobe advice always cracked me up too - "We want to make sure we stay separate from the world, which means we don't want to resemble the way they dress" however their are NUMEROUS worldly people that dress the SAME WAY THEY DO. I've never be the sort to dress in extreme garb, but when my parents didn't want me to wear a necklace, I thought that was taking things a little TOO FAR. I've known people to size up anothers spirituality based on the necklace he had on.
Most of the men in Biblical times had beards. Go figure. If I understand correctly, Witnesses used to be able to wear beards - I don't know what changed that. It's still just as popular now to have a beard as it's ever been.
Very nice review Mt 23 - thanks!

Can't help but think of the woman in Africa that may be stoned for having a baby out of wedlock.
Is the Bible the only source of these strict laws? It seems like things like this would be recorded in other publications/scripts/what-have-you....???
In regards to the screaming, maybe the original intent was to indicate "resistance." Besides, just because nobody heard her scream didn't mean she didn't. If a man holds his hand over her mouth or gags her, her screams will not be heard outside a home unless someone is directly outside the window. (I'm *not* speaking from experience here, just a logical conclusion). Surely a loving God would not want to stone an innocent virgin girl unneccesarily, so assuming this passage is God-inspired, one would logically have to conclude that He was referring to resistance in this passsage.
The reality of this though is really shocking. Can't help but wonder how many innocent women were put to death because of this. It must really pain the Almighty to witness injustices done to innocent people supposedly performed in His honor. Ugh. Really makes me think....
