What does Josephus say about 586/87 BCE?
by ithinkisee in.
i know he refers to the 70 years originally in one place and later changes it to 50 years later in his life when he got more info - but other than that, is there any other relevant stuff from his works regarding nebuchadnezzar laying the smack-down on the temple in 586/87?.

Ultimatum
by datingAjwgirl in.
is it wise to give bible student girlfriend of a year the ultimatum of reading crisis of consiencness or its over.. if she does read it will she just reject it as the devils handiwork?

i don't think "crisis of concience" makes any difference. i've never heard of "ray franz" in all of my JW life until i joined boards like this. no common JW would know him. thus this book would be treated like any other "apostate liar"'s book. and really... it could all be made up (i haven't read it so far, and i actually don't really need to read it).
if you really want to make someone think, use logic. there are many topics to talk about. if you want to get her out of all that abrahamic religion thing or want to be more of a liberal christian, learn the many errors of the bible (for example look at The Skeptic's Annotated Bible). this way you can also refute all the calculating stuff, because biblical numbers are complete nonsense.
you can also go the 607/587 road, which aint that hard if you do it well. the "revelation-climax" book has a page that states that russel used the year 606 to calculate the 1914 date (actually he also used the pyramid angles to calculate that date). you should also know that russel didn't predict the comming of the christ for 1914 (he already did that for 1875) but big A itself! we all know it didn't happen.
personal experiences can always be dismissed by "humans make errors". logical reasoning can only be dismissed by switching off the brain... -

Are You For or Against The Death Penalty?
by minimus inpersonally, i have nothing against executing wanton murderers.

in times of "preemtive wars" one has to ask when the first individual will "ride the lightning" because of a psychological test. minority report, anyone? god bless america.

Tetrapak

on topic: i'm against. of course i am against it. and i'd sign tetrapod's post anytime.
what i'd like to know is, how high the percentage of religious people on the supporters side is. -

Another marriage bites the dust because of JW beliefs
by unbeliever ini know very few people who have been successfully married where 1 spouse is a witness and the other is not.
i know there are a few examples on this board.. a couple that i know irl have split after nearly 25 years of marriage because of the stupid shunning shit.
one of their 3 children got df'd 6 months ago and that is when everything fell apart apparently.

The WBTS encourages to keep the union if the other party is not a JW.
yeah it does. it also says that noone will be disfellowshipped for accepting blood transfusions or for voting.
the WTS told us in the last assembly that marrying an "unbeliever" would be more or less equivalent to shooting a bullet into your head.
the WTS suggests in their writings, that stopping going to meetings and field service results in fornication and divorce.
i damn well know that they are destroying family relationships. and yes THEY are the issue. because THEY put that sh't in their sheeps' heads. -

Discipline or Child Abuse?
by Dimples ini remember spanking my son when we used to attend meetings and conventions because he cried and just wouln't sit still.
i was told that he had to be disciplined so he would learn to behave and learn what was being said from the platform.
now that i look back i realize that that was child abuse and i feel so horrible about it.do you feel guilty for spanking your kids during meetings and conventions?
-

there is nothing wrong with spanking, plain and simple.
OMG!! it's WRONG! it's wrong wrong wrong, plain and simple! it's damaging! and it just shows your weak personality. -

oh, well, it was all about the END again. after the assembly i heard sisters talk about "how ignorant someone who doesn't see the signs of the end must be". you should have seen the applause when gerrit stepped on the stage... so much about worshipping people. he talked a lot about the end. that's the only thing to keep a JW active, actually.
there was also a special talk to those who are now inactive. they suggested that we inactive JWs would still believe in all there sh't. don't know where they got that from.
listen up, gerrit, i don't believe in you nor in your fake organisation, nor in your fake god. you can't reactivate me again. i'm out of service for you, little guy, forever.
