Atheism doesn't mean a "lack of faith" it means "without God" or without divine. An atheist has faith that science and naturalism can explain everything and is capable of deducing the totality of all reality.
pardon me, but that's completely untrue. a theist is someone who believes in (a) god(s). an atheist is someone who does NOT believe in a god, thus exactly has a "lack of faith" in god. there are positive atheists who would claim "there IS no god", but most serious atheists would say "i don't believe there is a god, because i don't see any evidence".
about science: atheism has nothing to do with faith in science. one can be an atheist and not rely on science. there's no real connection here. i as an atheist wouldn't claim that EVERYTHING can be explained by science either. but i prefer logical and scientific explainations to faith-based explainations.
one big mistake that is made very often is to mix the (at least 2) semantics of the word "believe". one semantic paradigm is "thinking, but not be 100% sure about it", like in "i believe i left the keys on the table". the other semantic paradigm is "having a religious belief", like in "i believe in jesus". religious people often exchange these semantics to "show" that atheists also "believe". indeed, everyone "believes", but not necessarily in the religious sense.
just imagine all well known scientists gathering every sunday, singing songs like "oh i believe in gravity, i believe, i believe that everything that goes up-up-up comes down-down-down again oh yeah". i'm not sure how much trust you would put in these people.

"You guys are the most preachy atheists I've ever met!"
by GetBusyLiving ina christian friend of mine had a melt down this weekend and screamed at my roommate about both of us being "preachy atheists".
he also said, in talking about me, that "i can see it in his eyes, he think's he's right!
" it was after a bunch of drinks at a bar and my roommate said that he was nearly in tears.

the "abrahamic" belief-systems are not all that harmless... but the fact that they come in many colors and the fact that LT is posting on this thread and will tear me into pieces if i keep commenting on "christianity" will keep me from being preachy. at least for the moment.
and yes, i am a born again atheist too, calming down however. -

Which bible quotes did you hate most?
by DannyBloem inprobably we all had bible quotes (mostly out of context) used against us.. .
which of these quotes did you have most?.
of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

"children, obey your parents in everything, that's what the lord likes..."
when i was a little boy, my father sent me to bring the cooking spoon and lay down so he can hit me... i had to bring the spoon and i had to lay down, because that's what the lord likes... f* you, lord. -

HAS MUSIC ever sneaked up on you and changed the way your view life?

i thought this was about "paradise lost", the band... listened to them a lot when i was in school.
there are some lines in songs that have a huge impact on my view of life.
"wolfsheim" for example has a line in their song "kein weg zurück": "du willst noch leben irgendwann, doch wenn nicht heute, wann denn dann?" ("you still want to live somewhen, but if not today, when then?"). this is somehow my credo since i first heard that song. -

so, shining one (aint that "lucifer"?), what explaination do you have to the "metal temple" (see one of running man's recent topics)?
no matter how much cultural and historical context you add to it, no matter if it's directed by god or by lizard space aliens, no matter if there's someone who looked into that matter more then me: there's just no way to put that much silver and gold into a temple that chiquito.

i liked this quote, blondie. btw, nice new avatar.
so that elder talked to me alone (http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/9/95702/1.ashx) and it was a nice conversation.
but yesterday he called again and said, they would talk to me again, this time with another elder. so i said, i don't think that would be useful to anyone. he said, they just want to talk to me about the same issues again and the other elder wants to know about it too.
so i said, i wont talk about those same issues to anyone else so if they really want to come, my answers will be according to that. they'll be very different. he was ok with that and didn't insist any longer.
i think/hope i'll be left alone now for a while. -

Worse than death?
by 5thGeneration inone society thing that drives me crazy is trying to scare us by quoting the scripture about one who knows the truth and leaves is worse off than others who have never known the truth.. question: if every non-jw is going to die at armageddon, how can someone who leaves be worse off?
are they going to die more than the others?.

does "randomness" exist?
by googlemagoogle inthis is maybe largely parallel to the "free will" debate.
or if there is such thing like "chance".
many computer languages have a math function "random()".

this is so fun. i's really arguable where the burden of proof is. but i think pole got it right, as in "the most popular theory got it right, as long as it's not proven wrong".
hmmm. BUT that's not good at all. "god" was the most popular theory for a long time and it has never been proven wrong i think...
so "randomness" is an "ultimate cause"? like "god"?
and "hidden variables" is a "unfalsifiable theory"? like "waiting on jehovah"? LOL
i can't help, but i really lean to the "hidden variables". because time has shown that unexplainable events could be explained later.
googlemagoogle of the "our lady IPU got lotsa hidden vars" class.
