narkissos has posted two very good links. they helped me a lot when i researched the origins of the different canons.
one thing that's really confusing when comming from the JWs, is that the bible is not a book. as in ONE book. it's a lot of books. take them all apart. one of the biggest mistakes - or power tools? - ever made was compiling them into one bound book.
however, as you already know there are different canons. the jewish, the protestant (old testament is the same as the jewish canon), the roman catholic, the orthodox, the syrian orthodox, the ethiopian orthodox, the septuagint...
the septuagint is one of the most interesting translations. because it's actually pre-canonical and included books like maccabees and henoch. those are still present in the ethiopian orthodox canon.
early christians had a huge amount of sacred texts. the need for a canon and orthodoxy raised with the hunger for power to control the religion. it's not possible to control so many different paths as christianity was back then - i think even today we don't have as many sects as back then.

Where to find the "complete" bible
by sinis ini have been looking at some different sites and doing my own research regarding the modern day bible.
it becomes appearent that the catholic church had a huge say in what cannons were adopted and the ones which were not.
does anyone know where i can get a bible that would include the original texts that the jews considered to be sacred?

Some friends I realize are able to understand a bit more about where I'm coming from than others.
yeah, exactly. different friends for different situations. but all to have fun with. -

WHAT'S THE PETTIEST THING YOU DID AS A JW?
by steve2 ini snitched on a sister who used to spend a lot of supposed field service time in a local cafe, but she still counted the time.
she was spoken to by a couple of elders and was never seen in that cafe again.
of all the things i did as a "loyal" jw, i feel worst about my snooping on this really nice lady.

i stopped talking to my sister when she was defed. and the elders hailed me for that.

Do as we do, not as we say?
by MerryMagdalene inis this just one more example of the wts preaching one thing but practicing another?.
sound, reasonable loving advice is currently being presented on their official website in regard to "your role as a parent".
but how can the average jw take this into consideration----experts believe that overscheduling children with countless adult-led activities could stifle their imagination and creativity.

jesus said: "you are my friends when you do what i say". lol. i always had to laugh about that one. good friend, man.
in WT talks and also here on the forum and wherever, people always would define a "real friend" as someone who's there when you need someone, listen when you want to vent and comfort you when you are sad.
i refer to people as my friends, when i hang around with them a lot... i'm there for them and listen to them when they got something to vent, but i myself really never had the need to talk to someone because i'm sad and i am very careful about sharing very personal thoughts.
actually i got different friends for different topics. like, i'd share a thought with this friend, but not with the other one. but i wouldn't ever talk about this topic with this friend, but with the other one.
hmm.. don't know if you get it. don't even know why i write this. but now this thread is open for discussion.
[added] strangely i'm more likely to share personal things anonymous on this board than personally with a friend. -

i loved to get sick, because this was the only way to skip a meeting and stay at home.

i didn't want to see it, but then i actually liked it, because i saw so many parallels to the JW life. "paradise earth", "follow the rules", and always having the feeling there's something wrong about it.

Why did the WTBTS not sue Ray Franz?
by Gill inif ray franz had been lying in anything he said in both of his books, c of c and in search of christian freedom, surely the wtbts would have sued him.
why did they take no legal action against him?.
could it be that this legalistic corportion realised he had lied about nothing?

i'm not sure if anyone outside the US who is an active JW and does not have internet access, visiting "apostate" sites, has ever heard of ray franz.
