  Baptist funerals vs. JW funerals

  i went to a funeral at a 1st baptist church this past weekend.

  it was for the son of a former co-worker.

  travis was 18 and was about to start his senior year in high school.

  The priest was up there and I'm sure he must have a standard form that he reads after inserting the deceased's name in there. Just a bunch of nothing and it was all the insane rehearsed prayers, crossing themselves a million times and trying to invoke Mother Mary throughout.

  i'm not catholic, but i feel i need to say something here. just because we don't agree with something doesn't mean that it's "a bunch of nothing." i'm sure if you were catholic you would have found it a very encouraging service. then again, i wasn't there so i have little right to comment, but i just think that freedom of religion has to include tolerance of practices that we personally do not receive benefit from.

  for all intents and purposes, i am agnostic but just because i am doesn't mean that those who are not can't derive some benefit from the practice of their religion.

  just my two cents...

  if i had one year left i wouldn't change a thing. i wouldn't quit my job. i wouldn't just take off. i would keep living as i am now. i think you should always assume you have only one year left (at the most).

  it's hard to live every day as if it were your last but i think it's a great thing to live every year as if it were your last.

  live your life now. don't wait until someone tells you you're dying...you already are.

  How many witness marriages would end in divorce

  were it not for the witness view of marriage as an eternal bond how many witness couples would have gone their separate ways?

  based on what i've personally seen i would say at least 75%.

  i`ve just had my third, one this morning, one at lunchtime after the gym and one now as i have been sitting in the sun and needed to wash all that smelly suncream off, and i might have one before bed.. .

  Learning not to be judgemental

  the other day i realized that i am having trouble learning not to be judgemental.

  as a witnesses i was always looking at others and judging them.

  now, this is the most difficult thing to quit doing.

  So where does the moral dilemna arise?

  i had the same problem when i was coming out. but i think it comes from the indoctrination of the WTS' values. i started to stop myself when i had judgmental thoughts and really see if i could come up with a valid reason as to WHY that thing was "bad" in my mind. almost all of the time i came back to the answer, "because the JW's don't do that."

  really, why is 'kissing or fondling a stranger' bad? if you're in a relationship it could be considered disrespectful to the mate. i think that's a valid reason. but what if both are single? then i think the reason is because it could "lead to something more..." (i.e. watchtower think). why is "something more" bad in and of itself? i think that's up to everyone individually but personally, i think that unwanted pregnancy is something to avoid and i'm certainly not a big fan of STDs, but i see nothing wrong with people having safe fun...

  my point is just that i think we hold on to values that have been "injected" into us long after we leave. we assume that those values (by which we naturally judge ourselves and others) are OUR values, but maybe they're not. i think after we determine what our personal values/morals are, we won't notice ourselves judging others so much because we'll fully realize that our morals are simply OUR morals (and maybe there is no such thing as "good" and "bad").

  plus, i hate how my family and friends project their morals and definitions of sin on me. i'd hate to tdo the same.

  Do you let spiders live in your home?

  i have one or two little spiders that i noticed living in my home... but i don't get rid of them hoping that they will keep the other bugs out.. does anyone else do this?.

  my last contact with my mom

  i wrote an email to my mom last friday.

  it didn?t go so hot.

  my girlfriend had sent her a pretty harsh letter criticizing my family sharing her opinion about the religion about 2 weeks ago and she had never gotten a response (which kind of surprised me, actually.

  I would send her a card, or even flowers... just a "thinking of you" type thing, with no hint of anything 'religious'. In other words, take the high road and keep the door open ... you're the only one of the two of you who can.

  this is a really good idea, i think. i felt like after this last time, i kind of lost some composure and up until now i've made it my chief concern to at all times come across to them as non-accusatory, loving, humble and always ready to reunite. i kind of blew it this last time. i think if for no other reason, this would be a good way to regain that high road.

  and bubba-

  I wonder if she'd consider a trade - 3 months of meetings for 3 months of therapy?? I'd love to offer that to my mom.

  i was just thinking about something along these lines. do you think it would be worth it to offer to go to meetings for a few months or something if they'd look at some info that i'd send them? (UN stuff or crisis of conscience) i personally think that it would be futile to try any kind of trade off, especially because i would continually be leaving myself open to hope that they would come around. i think that being open to hope is what leaves people so vulnerable when it doesn't happen.

  thanks guys. i really appreciate it. my girlfriend just gave me a hug yesterday and i completely broke down. i felt like i was dying.

  i know that i'm not the only one going through this stuff but some days that's not such an easy thing to remember.
