...that site kinda gave me the creeps. I think Rick's way of going about the whole thing seemed like a vendetta more than a sincere desire to help people.

I've always avoided saying this, but that's how I've felt about it too. I've tried to examine why specifically I feel this way. I mean, there's some good information there; good experiences, etc. It's just that in the videos (to me) he comes off as loud, affected, and smirking. While the information provided can certainly be of help to people reconsidering the WTS, the primary feeling I'm left with after going to that site is...this man really wants to give that knife a good twist inside the Watchtower belly. Further, his cartoonish persona seems like something current JWs would identify as just the typical nutty apostate the Society warned them about.

I hope most people don't agree with me. I hope he does genuinely help people see the light, etc. Just the way I see it.

Just Because I Am Brown...

do not assume that i speak spanish.. it seems to that more and more latinos that i interact with on a daily basis assume that just because i have brown skin, i speak spanish.. end of rant.. edited to add: wouldn't this be akin to assuming that just because a person is african-american that he/she can sing, dance or play sports well?.

I do get pissed though when they get upset because I don't speak Spanish.

Right. I myself work and am close friends with a staff that is about fifty percent Spanish-speaking (although they speak English well too.) A large percentage of our prospective clients are also Spanish speakers. Most seem appropriately gracious about the language barrier--as I endeavor to utilize my very basic Spanish...

"Hablo Espanol como un nino pequeno. Pero nosotros tenemos consejeros que hablan Espanol en la oficina que te pueden contestar todas sus preguntas por telefono."

But when we lived in southern California in particular, my assoicates and I--as well as my daughter--would occasionally notice how a fair number of Spanish speakers seemed righteously indignant that we didn't immediately produce someone who could communicate with them in their tongue.

I continue to improve in my understanding of Spanish. Although I don't think it should be a law for people to be forced to learn English, I confess that I don't understand why some can be here for more than twenty years and not have made the attempt to learn it. I find people like this all the time. Whether they learn it or they don't, it's their business. But PLEASE don't get mad at ME because, although you have moved to the United States, YOU refuse to learn English but expect ME to speak YOUR language.

Ran into the JW table at San Diego airport...

yes, my ladyfriend and i were entering the san diego airport for our flight home to phoenix late yesterday afternoon, when i noticed a forty-ish man and woman sitting down behind a table loaded with wts publications.

i stopped to glance over them with joy.

i made familiar comments about some of the publications, noting the newer soft covers and trying to casually engage the pair in conversation.

It really was quite pathetic. Both of these JWs appeared to be very pleasant, but Jesus H., they didn't want to say a friggin' word! Just sat and stared. I made sure I acted very favorable toward the publications. (And I was, in a "Cult Museum" sort of way.) I asked how long they'd had a table there. I commented on some of the books, made more agreeable eye contact. Nothing. Not even a "Oh, are you familiar with our publications?" Nada.

What were they waiting for me to do? Ask when the next baptism opportunity was?

Yes, my ladyfriend and I were entering the San Diego airport for our flight home to Phoenix late yesterday afternoon, when I noticed a forty-ish man and woman sitting down behind a table loaded with WTS publications. I stopped to glance over them with joy. I made familiar comments about some of the publications, noting the newer soft covers and trying to casually engage the pair in conversation. I asked how long they'd had this display at the airport. After a long pause, the man said, "I really couldn't tell you."

So I looked over all the books, making eye contact with both of them from moment to moment. Finally it was time to go. I smiled and said, "Nothing to say? You didn't even try. These are the last days!" and walked away.

Apparently the actual attempt to reach people in "these last days" is not the aim of this part of their "ministry." Perhaps it is the easy hours one can accumulate, sitting on a stump as people walk by that appeals to such JWs.

i've lived through some ... a death where my brother caught an elderly lady as she dropped dead while singing !.

a girl in early twenties marries a man (elder) 27 years older ..still married 30 years later !.

an elder is stabbed with a knife.. but it hits his belt buckle.. police called.

Wow... I remember that one, Questioning. Don't think I knew he was her daughter's boyfriend though. Sheesh... I do recall thinking she was an example of the quintessential pioneer elder's wife though.

SAT Scores.....

well i just found out my 18 year old grandson has been accepted to saint louis university and is getting a $15,000.

scholarship!

next he will be applying for the full scholarship.... i guess they really really want him...he just got 34 on his sat test.. he sure didn't get his brains from me!!!!

I hope he can get a bit more help, Snoozy. As I recall SLU's sticker price is about $35,000. I'm not sure what his family's circumstances are. If they have any financial need, there'll be some help there. There are a few other things he can do as well...

-Identify any "special circumstances" in his case. (Unusually high private school tuition payments, unusually high family medical or dental expenses, parents in the process of separation or divorce, etc.) Special circumstances can possibly increase his financial aid package.

-If the first offer is not pretty extraordinary, he can always appeal. In so doing, it will not rescind the original offer--and they may consider increasing it. Happens all the time. It will require a pretty effective appeal letter, written fairly quickly after receiving his award letter from SLU.

A 34 is an absolutely terrible score for the SAT, considering the highest you can get is 2400... So I'm sure you must be referring to the ACT. And, yessirrebob, with 36 being the highest possible, that's an amazing ACT score! Not surprised they're kicking in with a scholarship.

Anyone watch Joy Behar on "The View" today? Racist or am I dreaming?

i was watching it-i know she likes obama and all, but she said something that struck me as insulting to the obama family as well as all the americans who voted for them.

it was something to the effect that "look at that beautiful perfect family-if they weren't so beautiful, so educated, smooth, well spoken, so well dressed etc etc, there is no way he would ever have been elected.

i didn't even vote for obama and that just struck me as racist.

For those who say Joy Behar is only telling the truth...okay, perhaps she is. But tell me: what would the response have been if, say, Sarah Palin or (maybe) Bill O'Reilly had said exactly the same thing? Honestly.
