do not assume that I speak Spanish.
It seems to that more and more Latinos that I interact with on a daily basis assume that just because I have brown skin, I speak Spanish.
They do the opposite with me, some struggle into English when they talk to me, because I don't look Latino to them. Then I respond in Spanish and they act surprised.
I remember back when I worked in construction (electricity) some Mexicans in a different trade complained about me in Spanish and called me some very nasty names not knowing. Apparently, I was in their way. Then I would politely ask them the time in Spanish and they would blanch.
Now when I am back in Miami visiting of course, there I speak in English just to throw off the people behind the counters and cash registers. Or I forget how it is there if I am just arrived. I've been away so long I get mild culture shock when I visit the places I was raised in.
