Cute but very disturbing... Send your kid a letter from Santa...
by Elsewhere ini love to get into the whole christmas spirit thing, but i never take it to the point of lying to or deceiving children about it.
i try to teach kids that it is the spirit of christmas that matters... then i saw this thing.
parents are actively trying to deceive their kids by offering them "proof" that santa is real.

As a neverJW parent of 2 (now 15 and 23), both my kids grew up believing in Santa, as did I, and at some point we learned the truth. I can't really pinpoint the moment for any of us, more just a gradual realization, but it certainly wasn't traumatic. My kids still don't admit that they don't believe because then they couldn't hang up their stockings on Christmas eve. In a way, I think it's harder on kids who are not allowed to believe (like in Miracle on 34th Street). I believe that Santa exists in any of us who give without any expectation/hope of acknowledgment or thanks....now as a Canada Post employee, we send out form letters from Santa to anyone that writes to him. We used to personalize them with comments about their Christmas lights, pets, siblings etc. but we are no longer allowed to do that because someone, somewhere wrote some comments regarding the child being too greedy or something like that. Now we have to stick with the form letter...

As a JW did you "take a turkey" or accept the Xmas Bonus?
by confusedjw ini felt it hypocritical to take a turkey abviously meant for thanksgiving.
i didn't like buying the easter candy after easter either as it was "food sacrificed to idols".. years ago at a place i worked they gave out a xmas bonus which i returned.
( a few hundred dollars which we sure could have used) they assured me that it was an "end of the year" bonus.

My husband used to work with a JW who made a big stink every Christmas about being forced to take the day off so they had to let him work, even though the plant was shut down and it was a stat. holiday under their contract...he seemed to have no problem taking the double time and half for sitting there by himself all day though. A friend was telling me the other day that her husband can't get time off at Christmas because the 4 JWs he works with all take that week off and they have more seniority. Go figure...

Seriously though...I live very close to the US border. This is also a popular (but still underdeveloped) recreational area. Add in the difference in the dollar--not as good for the Americans as it used to be but still in their favour--and cheap real estate in this area....we have seen a huge number of US citizens buy property up here and just come and go throughout the year. Ski season is starting and they are all rolling in (actually lots of Australians too so it isn't just about Bush lol)

Family Day??
by ConcernedMom inmulan mentioned this on another thread and coincidentally, my daughter and i were discussing it today.
her jw boyfriend and his family have been talking about it...his little sister is making her list of gifts she wants, parents checking out the holiday flyers for good deals on video games etc.
i gather they get up early, have lots of presents and special meals and get together with extended family.

Hmmm....this sounds so familiar...sort of like Christmas but they have it a few days later. Is this common to most JW families or just this one? The also had a "movie and pizza night" on Halloween with big bowls of candy. Since one of the objections to Christmas is that it has pagan roots, if you are celebrating "family day" in lieu of Christmas, aren't its roots linked to Christmas and in turn to pagan traditions?? Just strikes me as a bit hypocritical, that's all.

I can't remember where I originally found this... Lord's Prayer A Translation of "Our Father" directly from the Aramaic into English (rather than from Aramaic to Greek to Latin to English) O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration! Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide. Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of your mission. Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire. Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish. Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes. Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment. For you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth-power and fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.
