) - i was a teenager in high school and guess what?

i never saw one eposode on local tv.

I never got into any STar Trek except the original and the movies (the newest is excellent in its portrayal of the young crew). But I think the show presented some very profound and thought-provoking moral issues - things that were pretty advanced for the time. I always like Miri for that reason, how it portrayed what might happen if a group of kids were abandoned and had to survive. A theme that was woven through so many episodes was the idea of good and evil existing within each of us. Plus so much of the technology was really predictive of things we now have.

Some other fave episodes: Tomorrow is Yesterday - where they travel back in time and are mistaken for a UFO, then accidentally pick up a fighter jet pilot. And who could forget Sulu's swordplay in The Naked Time. All Our Yesterdays - where they enter this time travel library and find Mariette Hartley exiled in an ice age cave.

Love, LOVE Star Trek. Amok Time is a fave. Loved the story about how the actress playing T'Pau couldn't make the "live long and prosper" sign. This side of Paradise is awesome. I also loved the episode with a young Joan Collinswhen they visit earth in the 1930s, City on the Edge of Forever. And who could forget Devil in the Dark, when Spock mind melds with a rock mother.

Oh, and Miri. And The Menagerie, And Space Seed when we meet Ricardo Montalban for the first time.

But I can't really say there isn't an episode I don't love. I'm a huge Trekkie.

It must have aired on non-meeting nights, I can't recall. Our meetings were always Friday nights.

Thanks for the quotes, CA. They are all pretty twisted. I recall a few months back there was a thread about the notion of parents stroking children's genitals as child abuse. Quite bizarre.

I had forgotten the strong link they always drew with masturbation and homosexuality. I don't think I ever saw the one on "abnormal, mentally deranged people," though, and of course their fake reference about priests and nuns - they always have to get a little dig in against the Catholics, don't they?

Talesin (and Bells) I hear what you are saying about meds, and I know they aren't the solution for everyone. My particular rant is against the notion that pain meds are always BAD and should be avoided at all costs because they WILL addict you. Simply not true, and far too many people have suffered needlessly as a result. As Bells says, science has made incredible advances in pain management. I believe pain medication is the same as any other type of drug that helps you manage a medical condition. Which pain is.

My heart goes out to anyone dealing with chronic pain. There is nothing more soul destroying than to wake up every morning in pain, having no idea how you will get through the first 15 minutes, let alone the rest of the day. People who judge pain meds have never experienced that kind of relentless, unforgiving pain.

I know so many people who resorted to double/triple doctoring because no one would prescribe them adequate meds. I also know many addicts who steal pain meds for their personal high. So I'm not innocent in that regard, either.

When it comes to pain, though, whatever works personally is what matters. I'd love to not have to take meds. I often think about the people in New Orleans - how would I fare if suddenly I lost my medication for several days? No one wants to be reliant on a drug. But you also need to maintain a good quality of life.

Anecdotal evidence may not have scientific backing (which I think is really important) but sometimes it puts us onto something that does work. Ideas from others about what worked for them is invaluable. Perhaps most importantly, if you believe in a therapy, you increase the chances it will be successful. I believe in music/art therapy, and it is supported by research, even though it may be in its infancy.

Tal - I think it's awesome that you are finding relief through music. That particular power is only just beginning to be explored, I think.

it is not a huge surprise and i am not afraid nor "shaking in my boots", however i will admit it is stressful right now.

Ray - I loved your piece on disfellowshipping, read it a while back. Having faced a JC (and appealed) I know something of what you must be feeling right now. AT least you know you are right, which can give you strength.

I agree with the others who suggest the focus of your media release should be on your personal loss, things that will resonate with the masses. Keep things short and to the point, but let them know what DFing does to people.

I didn't want to sidetrack the thread earlier, but I wanted to add a comment about pain meds. There is unfortunately a belief that pain meds should be avoided because you will become addicted. The truth is that when used properly to treat pain, research shows that addiction is rare. Most of the time, though, doctors under-prescribe, so patients are still in pain and find themselves multi-doctoring trying to find pain releif.

I've suffered chronic pain for many, many years (result of an MVA). Fortunately I found a doctor who specializes in pain management. We worked on my meds and dosage for several years until we found the right balance. I take pain meds regularly, and my pain is under control. My next goal is to gradually reduce the dosage, but I have no intention of ever going back to constant daily pain. I'm only "addicted" in the sense that if I were to stop abruptly I'd suffer withdrawal, but it's no different that taking insulin for diabetes. If you were not given a sufficient dosage, you'd still be suffering the symptoms. Far better to be pain free and gradually reduce dependence on meds than to be in constant pain and self-medicating in a futile effort to make the pain stop.

The whole notion that it is somehow noble to suffer pain rather than use the very excellent pain management drugs that are available is a bit of a throwback. My mom refused any pain meds for cancer until the last few days because of that misguided idea. When she finally accepted pain drugs it was a relief to everyone - especially my mom.

Lois, please do all you can to stay safe and keep your daughter safe. And if you haven't already done so, please contact your local victims' services agency. They can help connect you with counselling services and other supports. You may already be getting counselling, but it is essential to help you learn how to escape the victim mentality that keeps so many women prisoner. I've been through it myself, although my ex was not a JW. But even after he ripped chunks of hair out and blackened my face (in front of my children), the elders told me staying in the marriage was the right thing to do.

When you stay in an abusive relationship, your children are also in danger of developing the same victim-think which can lead to the same thing down the road for them. Two of my daughters have recently escaped highly abusive relationships, but not before sustaining damage. Gaining self-insight and understanding into how abusers set up their victims and keep them terrorized is what finally helped me regain my self-esteem, and that knowledge will help keep you safe in the long run.

I hadn't heard of that association, Talesin, but I will do some research. That's amazing what it has done for your friend, but not at all surprising. I've been collecting bits and pieces of those kinds of stories for years with the intention of writing my own book one day on the topic.

The University of Alberta has an interesting program "Arts & Humanities in Health & Medicine". They have links to a lot of library resources and you can join their mail list if you are interested in that sort of thing. There is a lot of anecdotal experience, like your own, but I find you have to weed through a lot of "personal opinion" type articles to find the actual scientific research-based information.
