I don't think it's that strange. JWs love to find proof that other religions back up their crazy beliefs.

God in your brain....
by EntirelyPossible injust came across an interesting study.
during brain scans, when people were asked how they felt about something, the same part of the brain was active as when they were asked how god felt about something.
when asked how other people felt about something, however, a different part of the brain was at work.. specifically, the portion of the brain that was active when asking people how god felt about things was the portion of the brain associated with self-referential thinking.... people are literally making god up in their own image as they go.

Athesist don't believe in gods. What is there to test?
I actually wondered about this, too. What part of the brain would be affected for an atheist? It wouldn't be self-referential thinking. So what would it be? The area that thinks about fantasy and myth, if there is such a thing?

I had been out for a while when I found this forum. I had been researching JWs because I was just starting my Masters in Psychology program. A first assignment was to explain my personal philosophy about life, so I needed to sort out what I believed. I found the link from Randy's site, I believe.
It was interesting, so I just started posting, no introduction thread or anything. In fact, I've never even shared my story, just bits and pieces.

Bethel perfection bubble burst
by redvip2000 injust got back from florida where i spent the holidays with family.
about half are jdubs.. this year the prevalent atmosphere of superiority from the jw side of the family was totally toned down.
one of my cousins, a bethelite in upstate ny bethel along with his wife, found out that the wife was having an affair with a young bethelite "brother".

I'm guessing it is, OoDad. The pieces fit. So very sad. I'm sure this young man 's talent and desire to have a career in music made things especially difficult for him - he would have been under presure from JWs to abandon those plans.

JWs say it's my fault I didn't go to university ?!
by ekruks inlike many on here, as a jw trying hard to follow the direction of the gb, i listened to the advice to pioneer and trust in jehovah to provide (mat6.33) instead of going to university.
after struggling for ages in low-paid physically-demanding jobs, i decided to become a student (thanks for the encouragement on here guys!).
i tell a jw i wish i had been to university when i was a teenager, and put all that pioneer time into studying hard for a good grade, get a good job, and if i had wound up tired as i am now, at least i would have been paying into a mortgage on a home and pension.

Ekruks - from reading your OP, I understand you are attending college now. That`s wonderful. I did the same thing years after I got out of the religion. I tried once to tell my mother how much it bothered me that I had been unable to go to university when I was still young, right out of high school. Her response was that it was my choice to go pioneering. She completely overlooked the pressure I had been under to quit school. She completely supported devaluing education, never once suggesting I should perhaps at least complete high school. She mocked my cousin who always strived for top marks and who went to university and is now a respected high school principal. She spoke disparagingly about one elder in our hall who let his son go to college (2-year degree). When my dad dared to suggest I could go to university and pioneer at the same time she shot him down. He didn`t fight back, either. It might have been my decision, but at the time I did not feel like I had any other options but go pioneering.
Just wanted to comment on the JW fallacy about college being a hotbed of immorality and drunkenness. That is so far from the truth it isn`t even funny. I was involved in my student union, and the vast majority of the students I encountered were hard working, dedicated to studying and earning their degrees. They rarely even partied. In their spare time they volunteered or got involved in activist causes to help make the world a better place.

Suicide - How many do you know within the JWs
by Lady Lee inthw wts likes to play games with their statistics.
one interesting but truly tragic is the number of jwhovah's witnesses who commit suicie.. now i suspect that if a person commits suicide shortly before or after they are disfellowshipped then the elders would say that person wasn't a witness or that they had done something so terrible that they were too guilty to admit it and by their action of committing suicide they pretty much declared they were no longer a jw.. yup fancy talk to make sure any crap didn't fall on them.. so my question.. do you know of cases like this?
if so then can you answer a few more questions.. had this person been dfed or in real danger of being dfed or whatever the equivalent is if they were never baptized?.

goneforgood - I cannot begin to imagine the pain you and your wife have been through. I, too, raised my children in a crazy cult. We make many mistakes along the way as parents, trying to do what`s best for our children. It sounds like you`ve recognized the cult for what it is. Hopefully you have been able to find some peace in your life after losing your precious child. Thinking of you.

My Humble Opinion of This Forum
by turtleturtle infirst off, i love frequenting this forum.
it has given me the opportunity to truly put jw stuff to the test and i thank everyone for their helpful responses.. however, i have noticed a couple things.. 1) the use of the word "troll" is completely childish.
this is no different than the name calling used by jws (e.g.
