When my wife joined the jws, the birthday issue was the most asinine. My wife's defense of the "logic" behind the prohibition was proof to me that she had drunk the kool-aid. I make sure that my two step-kids and my daughter have a birthday party every year. My wife's a homemaker in the suburbs, 2 blocks from the elementary school, and I have to leave work downtown to bring cupcakes for their class on their birthdays. Its not about the birthdays - its about making a kid feel like a total outcast and a loser because he can't celebrate a birthday. Same thing with the freaking pledge of allegiance.

Birthdays
by 9thWonder ini have been df'd for over 3 years (for the third time... you know it's the charm).
i have an 8 year old who is being taught by my parents the same things that i was taught, including how we can't celebrate birthdays.
i have been doing a little research on the origin of worldly customs, such as weddings and birthdays only to find that there are many wedding customs that witnesses have adopted that have pegan origins.

Potty Mouths?
by Low-Key Lysmith inwhen i got out of the dumbs, i use to cuss non-stop i think as a pathetic tactic to make worldy people think i was a little more worldy.
i still swear from time to time, and foul language does not offend me at all, but i was talking to my sister the other day, she just turned 21, has discovered alcohol, is currently on public reproof, and i think is really close to being on her way out herself.
she cursed like a sailor the whole time i was talking to her.

I love to cuss, particularly g/d. My jw wife won't even say "darn" or "crap". When I told the marriage counselor that I wouldn't give up cursing, that it was very cathartic, he looked at me like I was nuts.

The World Can't Wait, DRIVE OUT THE BUSH REGIME!
by Spook inwant this regime to be stopped.. .
the world cant wait!

Impotent. Nothing's different now than last November when Bush was reelected, so why will there be enough outrage to "drive out the regime." There will never be a radical change in government, just extremely slow pendulum swings. If Kerry was in office today, there would be no noticeable difference in anyone's life.
Except for the far left, the Democrats have supported the "murderous" and "illegitimate" war in Iraq.
No rational person believes that the government is "openly torturing people, and justifying it." Every mild allegation of misconduct is brought ot light, debated, and addressed.
The government is moving closer to a theocracy? Bush was democratically elected. Twice. The elections were close, but you would have had professed Christians as President either way.
The government is trying to deny women all over the world the right to birth control and abortion??? I missed that one. Just can't crush the skull and suck out the brains of an 8 month old fetus.
If you get Bush to step down, then you get Cheney. You're just going to have to wait until '08.

Played with a ouija for the first time. You'll NEVER guess what happened!
by scotsman inaside from much hilarity.
our host insisted that the spirits don't like having the piss taken so didn't appear, the sensitive wee souls that they are.. yet another barrier broken.

I'm a skeptic about the supernatural. As a child, raised evangelical Christian, I had various spooky experiences to which I attributed some spiritual or supernatural cause. I now dismiss those experiences as purely emotional. However...
In college two friends and I took a quija board into a dorm room. The two friends were blindfolded and I was instructed to take down the message. They circled the board and began stopping on letters, which I was recording. They actually began spelling out words: I don't remember exactly the words, but it included obscenities and telling us to stop. I got freaked out and told them to stop; the two blindfolded guys were freaked out and we got rid of that thing. The experience was real. I know we were anticipating something to happen, so maybe we all just got worked up. I don't know. It's the one "supernatural" type experience I can't say was 100% phony.

A newbie's impression on this board, pros and cons

Jesus, smelly onions, you are ignorant!!!
Everyone I knew that was dfed or daed was for their own personal enjoyment. They wanted an excuse to do what they wanted
Why does anyone need an excuse to do what they want? You honestly think that everyone who is not in the organization is having drunken orgies 24/7?
Most people do not need an all controlling org to guilt trip them into making good decisions in life.
You better not leave the kingdom hall, you wouldn't know how to wipe your own ass.

There were some good things about the organisation...
by Do I Stand Alone? ini have read a number of experiences in this discussion forum and quite frankly, i would have to agree that many, if not all, were pretty terrible experiences if not all together traumatic.
i know that my personal 9-11 tragedy resulted in finding out that the watchtower society was involved with the united nations.
that pretty much said it all as far as my "career" in the organisation was concerned.

The Watchtower magazine taught me how to masterbate, now that's an interesting story that I may expand on one day.

I learned from James Dobson's "Preparing for Adolesence" book.

Why would someone who has disassociated allow their child to be taken to KH
by Agnes ini just read the listeners post about baptisms at the district conventions and didn't want to disrupt the thread.
i'm curious, why would someone allow their child to attend the kh or district convention and possibly be pressured into getting baptized?

I allow my wife to take my 3 year old daughter. I'm worried. Maybe there will come an age where I have to put my foot down. I don't really have a spiritual alternative to offer. Right now she likes to put on a dress and be with her momma.

Reply on some good things in the organisation...
by Do I Stand Alone? inmy motivation was not to "recruit" for the watchtower society.
i thought i made it clear when i stated that i am no longer one of jehovah's witnesses anymore and that i am on your side.
however, the impression i am getting is that no one is really understanding what i am getting at.

These are my thoughts concerning the individuals in this room and I challenge you to disagree.
This is the quote from your previous post. You challenged people to disagree, that's what you got.
