NYC officials want new 'Survivor' pulled
By SARA KUGLER, Associated Press Writer Thu Aug 24, 9:54 PM ET
As CBS prepares to launch a new season of the hit reality show "Survivor," this time featuring teams divided by race, enraged city officials are saying it promotes divisiveness and are calling for the network to reconsider.
"The idea of having a battle of the races is preposterous," City Councilman John Liu said Thursday. "How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?"
For the first portion of the 13th season of "Survivor," which premieres Sept. 14, the contestants competing for the $1 million prize while stranded on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific will be divided into four teams — blacks, Asians, Latinos and whites.
Liu, who is Asian-American, said he was launching a campaign urging CBS to pull the show because it could encourage racial division and promote negative typecasts. He and a coalition of officials, including the council's black, Latino and Asian caucus, planned to rally at City Hall on Friday.
In a statement, CBS Entertainment, which is part of New York-based CBS Corp., defended the ethnic twist, saying it follows the show's tradition of introducing new creative elements and casting structures that reflect cultural and social issues.
"CBS fully recognizes the controversial nature of this format but has full confidence in the producers and their ability to produce the program in a responsible manner," the statement said. "'Survivor' is a program that is no stranger to controversy and has always answered its critics on the screen."
Last season, the show divided contestants into groups of older men, younger men, older women and younger women.
The show's host, Jeff Probst, said the network was aware this season's race ploy might offend viewers.
"It's very risky because you're bringing up a topic that is a hot button," he told asap, The Associated Press service for younger readers. "There's a history of segregation you can't ignore. It is part of our history.
"For that, it's much safer to say, 'No, let's just stick with things the way they are. Let's don't be the network to rock the boat. Let's not have "Survivor" try something new,'" he said. "But the biases from home can't affect you. This is an equal opportunity game."

UPDATED INFO:
New Survivor to Divide Teams by Race
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23, 2006 09:00AM EST
By Alexis Chiu
Fueled by critics who slammed its lack of diversity, CBS's Survivor has unveiled a new twist for its upcoming season: Contestants will be divided by ethnicity.
When it premieres Sept. 14, Survivor: Cook Islands will feature 20 castaways divided into four tribes: black, white, Asian and Latino.
"We're going to take some heat for it," says creator and executive producer Mark Burnett of the twist, which was announced Wednesday morning. "But it's a great cast."
For a show entering its 13th season with steady ratings but ebbing buzz, the decision could be a shot in the arm if it once again generates Survivor water-cooler chatter.
"Some people will think this is controversial. Others will think, 'What's the big deal?' " host Jeff Probst tells PEOPLE. "Either way, it's going to be very interesting."
Along with the usual real-estate agents and struggling actors, the cast of characters competing for the $1 million purse includes a heavy-metal guitarist, a female police officer who has been shot in the line of duty, a Vietnam War refugee who manages a nail salon and a gay fashion director for a denim company.
The segregated Survivor grew from an effort to diversify a show that has featured primarily white contestants (and winners – only two of the 12 winners have been minorities). "We've taken a lot of flack," says Burnett.
But Probst says the main reason for the Emmy-winning show's largely white complexion was a dearth of minority applicants. "Most of the people who apply are white," he says. "That's just a fact."
In response, the Survivor casting team scouted for a more diverse group of players everywhere from the Internet to audition tapes for another CBS show, The Amazing Race.
Until the tribes merge later in the season, the four teams will battle each other and, perhaps, racial stereotypes. "There are going to be people looking for stereotypes: Will this tribe be smarter than this tribe, or will this tribe be faster than this tribe?" says Probst. "That's why I think it's fun. But five people on a tribe do not represent an entire ethnic group."
Set in New Zealand's Cook Islands, the location of the famous mutiny on the HMS Bounty, this season features a pirate theme, including Tribal Councils held on an elaborate shipwreck set built into the rocky coastline of a local island.
Whether one ethnicity ends up plundering – or walking the plank – "This is a game that starts very even," says Probst. "Everybody starts the same way with the same materials and the same chance: a 1-in-20 shot at a million bucks." -

Elders can pick up prostitutes and even be arrested with a prostitute but can chalk it up to having a "weakness" or "problem" so no action was taken.
that would have been a shock to me but i personally know of instance in my area recently of a MS doing this and he's married...mentioned it to my mom who told her elder BIL and he pretty much told her to let Jehovah handle it like I lied about it or something..it is still listed on the police website...i don't get it, its like they out to get certain ones and the ones thats publicly known to do something wrong they let them get away with it...

SITTING ON THE BACK ROW..............NO, NOT AT THE MOVIES, AT THE KH
by vitty ini know we've heard a lot of horror stories about jcs and getting disfellowshipped.........................but what is your experiences of continuing going to the meetings to be reinstated.............what did it really feel like?.
did you mind being ignored or did you understand it and take it on the chin?.................................what were your familys treatment of you during the period of having to sit on the back row????.
when i saw ppl comming in late and leaving early .....................i just knew it was wrong, wrong , wrong to treat ppl that way.. in fact i got told off for smiling at a sister who i knew genuinly wanted to come back,( the pos wife told me ) i did it out of human feelings and was then blasted.. after she got reinstated, i was the first person she came upto and introduced herself.

darn guys..ya'll have me sad now..all those experiences of Jesus like love..
personally i got df'd back in 1996-7ish and never really looked back or attended a meeting til recently. i went twice in 2004 and both times i was with my brother. Although one sister came up to me and asked me, "are you right with Jehovah?" i should have said yes but said no..and she gave me a pity look and walked away...went to the memorial this year, didnt sit on the back row but still got some looks like what she doing here? went a few weeks ago, sat on back row but got there late and left soon as prayer was over so didnt have to worry about be approached..
on another note...garybuss saidI visited a nearby church one Sunday and after a short ways into the program, the pastor ( a lady) asked the congregation to stand up and shake hands and get acquainted with the people sitting nearby. The whole congregation did that. There was a friendly buzz for about 5 minutes and then we all sat down. It was nice. I liked it.
The church I attend does the same thing..and I was just telling my dad the other day that afterwards everyone holds hands and sings a final (goodbye) song together wishing each other peace til we meet again...never would have anything like that at the KH..so much love.. -

i was threatened with being taken off..during a time when my dad was desperately trying to get me back to the hall. I was told he didn't know who to leave his belongings to his step-granddaughter, his sister, or the other sister because he couldn't leave it to me or my brother cuz we wasn't living right which means wasn't going to the hall....I was like hell its your money do what you want with it...Of course that was said in my mind only but he never took me off the will...it was just a threat and no I didn't go to the hall at that time. I have been visiting lately tho.
