Aussie Ex-Dubs - Will You Be Voting Today?
by Stephanus ini realise some still retain a bit of a superstitious fear in certain areas where watchtower dogma has been drummed into you such as birthdays and christmas.
how do you feel about voting today?
especially in light of the fact that here in oz voting is compulsory and that doing so would demonstrate "subjection to the superior authorities" (rom.

Dear Judith,
I was invited to attend the memorial by a JW friend who was doing bricklaying for my father and I asked the Adventist Minister to come with me I didnt think he would but he decided to in the end. Later I moved to Canberra and I studied with the witnesses and attended the meetings but I dont attend anymore.

Being a current member of the Seventh day Adventist Church I may be able to answer some of the questions brought up here. i also studied with the witnesses for a while.
Judith Adventists beleive the second comming of christ is close but havent made a date for it. William Miller did make a date 1844 when nothing happened the date was reinterpreted to be another event 'the investigative judgement' this doctrine is still held by the Adventist Church but is rejected by the evangelical groups within the church.
Wannahelp shunning is not practiced among Adventists and would be considered an unchristian practice. There is no restriction on reading apostate literature or going to other churches or the kindom hall. I went to the memorial and asked my minister to come with me and he was happy to come.
The church is divided between traditionals who retain some of the distinctive Adventist doctrines and the Evangelicals who reject the 1844 type unscriptuall positions.
Adventists do have some similarities with the witnesses baptism by immersion, soul sleep, pre millienism, some are Arian but the vast majority are trinitiarian
Holy communion is practiced approximately 3mthly and is open to all beleivers regardless of denomination and is preceeded by footwashing as in Matthew when Jesus washed the desciples feet. So the moral is go with clean feeet on that day.

You say, done a lot of research over the past x years into churches that hold to a 'truth' and shunning is a format in many of them. Adventists sci fi cults, all the same. Its ties to the control of information, the channel of truth not wanting any access into the members minds by any other source, especially dangerous ones that know too much.
Mate Im an Adventist and Ive never known about shunning until I studied with the witnesses also the variety of beleife in the Adventist Church from Traditional who beleive the unique Adventist doctrines to the evangelical who reject traditional doctrines and are not much different to evangelical Christians to the Adventists who reject the trinity and beleive the Arian view the same as the witnesses would indicate to me your statement is not entirely correct. The reason I go their is they have excellent classes for my two boys with other kids there own age Im of the evangelical type and in the bible study i can as others do question doctrines of the church as a normal part of the study of the scriptures. There have allways been visible conflicting groups within Adventism.

I beleive the gospel is like this, Adam sinned and that brought death to the whole human race but was that my fault or your fault? Of course it wasnt. But Jesus paid the price for the sin of the whole world and you or I also had nothing to do with that. The only think we can do is to accept his salvation. This gives us the verdict of not guilty in the last judgement. Good works such as witnessing or anything else are done because we are allready saved not because we are trying to impress God with our works. In fact our best works are like filthy rags as it says in the old testament. Any attempt to save ourselves by our own works are effected by our own selfishness and are an insult to God.
Good works are however important to the christian not because we want to be saved but because we are allready saved and many could learn from the work the witnesses do in their dedication to the time and effort they put into witnessing but they will never be saved by anything they do it has allready been done.

Holy S*** visit tomorrow from the PO
by freeman inif you folks recall, a while back i went ballistic when my boys told me they were going to now shun both their newly dis-fellowshipped friends because that is what the society said is the loving thing to do.
sick!
anyway, i informed the father of the two boys, an elder, that my younger unbaptized son (12) will no longer be studying or going to the meetings because i dont want him to participate in or have his young mind twisted by such unscriptural teachings.

Dear Freaman,
With my limited experiance of debating it is best to take charge and establish what you want to talk about . Youve mentioned two subjects shunning and the UN thing. Dont let the conversation be sidetracked onto other subjects as much asyou may be tempted. Remember Martin Luther who put the 95 thesis on the church door, most Protestants wouldnt know what they are but all know about the doctrine that changed the world 'the just shall live by faith.' The doctrine of righteousness by faith.
make every punch count

Just to clear up the history, the SDAs started from the teachings of William
Miller who predicted the second comming of Christ in 1844 from various scriptures the primary one being Daniel 8.14 and using the year day principle for the caculation. When this prophecy failed the date was retained but different doctrine was used to explain it [ sounds like 1914 doesnt it]. Russell picked up on this idea I beleive knowing he had an exit strategy if it was required. And yes there similarities in doctrine a small number of SDAs are Arian [the belief that Jesus is a created being and the holy spirit is a force same as the witness belief], the Historicist system of prophetic interpretation. I think Russell was involved with second Adventists who set a date in 1874 while the SDAs only retain the 1844 date and that is finding less favour because of its unscriptural base.
Has interfaith helped the SDA communion?
In regard to scolarly output i would have to say undoughtedly yes. In the 50s Evangelicals Barnhouse and Martin met with SDA scolars and after 100s of hours of research resulted in greater understanding of biblical truth and from these meetings the book Questions on Doctrine was produced. These meetings have produced better understanding but also more agreement on biblical truth regardless of denominational affiliation. In the 80s an Anglican wrote a book 'The Shaking of Adventism' just to name a few. This book was written by him as a friend of Adventism.
