Gday Carmel,
Im an SDA and I wouldnt bother to go to such a meeting. This meeting is designed to get new converts and as you say there is no question time. Better not to have people asking questions it may confuse new people.
Ive never heard 'yeah brother' I think that would have been 'Amen brother'
If you want to ask questions go to the sabbath school its a bit like the WT study but there will be a lot of free thinkers there. I argue with them about issues I feel are important but everyone there can have a say hell they even dissagree with there own churches doctrine at times.

see below.. the adventist movement (millerites) was started by william miller (a lay baptist minister) in 1843 and that created 3 off-shots.
the advent christian church, the life & advent union, and the seventh-day adventists (which sprang the branch davidians).

Im an SDA and I think I can add something here.
SDA beleive in a visible comming of christ so thats out.
The early Adventists were Arian some still are of that beleif but most now beleive the trinity doctrine. The Whites, Urih Smith were all Arian. When Martin and Barnhouse studied Adventism the were amazed that both Trinity and Arianism were being taught in official church publications and they allmost classified Adventism as a cult because of it.
Beleif in a year -day principle but the funny part here is it is applied to different prophecys in the two churches. Some Adventists have rejected such principles of interpretation.
Adults are baptised by full immersion .
Many Adventists take a stand against war just as the witnesses do. They enter the armed forces as non combatants. Some also join in active combat roles.

by True North inanyone know when the early church "fathers" first unequivocally wrote of the trinity?
how about when they first unequivocally wrote of the unitarian/arian viewpoint?
and when did one view versus the other first become an issue?

I beleive part of the problem that ccomes up time and time again is the concept of developement of doctrine. Vincent of lerins said in the fifth centery 'christian doctrine is developed' just as a child grows into a man. That is the very example he used for eg the early christians had slaves later the idear was developed a christian haveing a slave was against christian principles was written by Augustine.
The doctrine of 'Justification by faith ' wasnt developed until the time of the Reformation in the 15th century so how can we not beleive the trinity developed in the forth century.
I think Arian a priest from Egypt put forth his idears in the fourth century.
The Nicean creed was a creed taken from a local creed. In fact during the first few centuries there were hundreds of creeds all with the same basic structure of father , son , holy spirit and other articals
A creed from the second century found during the last century says something like,
I beleive in God the father creator of the universe .
and in his son our lord
and in the holy spirit
and in the forgiveness of sins
and in the holy catholic church
Just as vincent of lerins wrote christian doctrine is developed, this looks just like the nicean creed in embrionic form.

by orangefatcat inmy wonderful husband knows that i have been a religious person most of my life and while he despises jehovah's witnesses with a passion, he knows that i still believe in god and christ.
he being a greek orthodox and a wonderful human being he bought me a beautiful crucifix of jesus on a cross.
it is black stone and silver and says on the back of the cross, alpha and omega.

Why is the cross so important to the christian? Colossians 2;13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,having cancelled the written code with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us, he took it away nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities he made a public spectacle of them triumphing over them by the cross.

Family of nine dead in Fresno...7th Day Adventist...
by sf inon fox news the son of the man accused of killing his family in fresno was just on camera stating his family was devout 7th day adventists and that "there was never any abuse".
isn't that church a close follower of jw church and policies?
the report states too, that it appears to be a ritual killing.

Im an SDA and would like to clear a few things.
Wednesday SDAs do have elders at the church I go to we have a lady elder an elderet I suppose. They are voted in by the church.
Over the elders in the minister who is a full time employee of the church.
Ive never heard of anyone haveing to confess to elders or ministers .
SDAs celebrate all holidays some have xmas trees in the church
From 2000 no adventists have been disfellowshiped the practice was voted out at the general conference session held that year in Toronto that year.
SDAs beleive in the second comming of christ when the faithfull will be taken to heaven to reign 1000 years; the earth will be renewed and will be made into a paradise
Beleifs similar to the JWs are soul sleep , similarities in profetic interpretations including the day year principle, and some SDA are Arian just as the JWs beleive but the majority beleive the Trinity doctrine.
I would describe Adventists as very legalistic but certainly not heavy handed.
Of couse there are many varities of Adventists eg my Dad an elder has differing beleifs to me and my Uncle has different beleifs to both of us and that is in the mainstream group.

by Carmel inlast night i attended a "seminar" put on by the 7th day adventists.
its been decades since i've attended a 7 day adventist meeting, but decided i would go see if they have come out of the 19th centrury yet.
alas, still the same stuff.

Being an SDA myself let me comment.
Carmel youre going to the wrong meetings they will all be on their best behaviour there because that meeting is to get converts. If you want to go to something where everyone can be themselves and talk freely go to what they call sabbath school before the sermon on saturday and if its a good group there may be some lively discussion.
50% of adventists practice "Health Reform' and that 50% according to studies have an increase in lifespan by 8 years. The 50% not practiceing ;Health Reform" were found to have a livespan similar to the rest of the community. Barry

by RubyTuesday inmy company recently(less than a year ago) replaced all our computers with dell and it has been nothing but a nightmare!.
