You Aren't Good Enough to Spend Time With Us, But Your Money Is Just Fine
by Scully inam i the only one here who has non-jw and jw siblings who exclude you from "family" social events, but see nothing wrong with asking you to contribute a significant amount of money toward gifts for jw parents who instigate your exclusion from family social events?.
quite frankly, i'm pissed off about this most recent request and i'm planning on ignoring it.
why should i give $200 of my hard earned wages to people who won't permit me in their home or speak to me?

HOW we "see" GOD (A step by step tutorial)
by Terry inpacman can help you understand how to "see" god.
first go to this link and observe how easily your mind will create a pattern (seeing a square that isn't there) when given other and seemingly non-related information.. go here first:.

Terry - how ironic - this example could well be applied to the current understanding of evolutionary history. On the flip side there are records of people actually seeing God, having discussions with him etc.. I haven't seen God yet but if I do ever happen to be looking at flashing bits of light and in the after image I see God I'll let you know just so you can pronounce my God a figment of my imaginagion and an occular error.
I'll stick with seeing God in the movement of planets, the birth of a baby, love, miracles, the glorious human body and spiritual fulfillment. You just keep disproving Him with optical tricks. Suits me.
Makes me wonder whther you actually have any interest in whether God exists or whether this is just an exercise in showing people how smart you think you are. -

Is Katrina just a precursor of things to come?
by zagor inif damage from one storm is going to cost, as they say, over a hundred billon dollars what would happen if we have another storm like that one, and another, and another, and another....
i mean prices of fuel have jumped to record high all over the world as result of one storm, how bad can it get really?
just this simple analysis would tell me that in a year or two of such hammering economy of the entire world could collapse.

Forget religion in this one. I think this is a forerunner. As cities continue to expand and insurers continue to insure the potential for gloabl finacial trouble gets greater. If global warming does make our weather more extreme then Katrina is probably just a taste of trouble ahead. If we add terrorist attacks to the mix it wouldn't take much to turn our debt based economies upside down. Western economies , UK in particular, gain an awful lot of money from finacial markets that can get hammered by disasters.

Who Really Rules the World?
by Perry ini was googling some terms recently and came across the below listed advertisement by the org.
the tag line made me recall regurgitating the same stuff without ever checking to see if it was true or not.
psalm 47:8 (new international version) 8 god reigns over the nations; .

The ordinary people do. They just need to wake up and be united that's all. Nothing can stand against a united people.

You know, Witnesses haven't cornered the market on being wrong.
by free2beme ini have been out of the witness religion since the 1990's and i see from reading former witness sites that it is common for people to do something i used to do.
which was that i made a big deal out of all the wrong things the witnesses did and do.
i thought it was some how my responsiblity to tell others when i had the chance, and even when i made the chance, about all the things i knew.

Maybe some things are exactly right though.
Its a dangerous path to take to move away from absolutes and start floating becasue you never know where you'll end up.
Quick example - Thou shalt not lie. A simple absolute but we are more adept at finding perceived gray spots than actually living that rule. Life would be smoother, better , nicer if we were honest (and tactful!) all the time - no fraud, no putting on appearances, no false emotion - more open communication, appraisal of situations and far more practical efforts. Builders wouldn't charge more than the job was worth, companies would never be Enrons etc..
If we put down anchor on an absolute we can explore its boundaries - if we don't like them we can move on, if we are always moving but never holding on to any moral 'truth' we lose our compass, yardstick and direction. Even a wrong decision is better than no decision at all. -

In situations like this I like to turn it round and think which one of the people would I have been in NO:
1/ The fanatic who lives for fear (religious types often) who think the end of world is coming and so hop between building bomb shelters and hoping that God will rapture me out of any danger.
2/ The loser who just bums of the state and have allowed my ability to cope and solve my own problems to be taken over by the state. I also complain loud when I'm not walked out of the state and someone doesn't give , give, give me everything.
3/ The arse who sees disaster as an opportunity to get even with the world by increasing the chaos by raping, looting and carrying a handy gun to shoot at people I don't like such as police.
4/ The stubborn idiot who lives by such false notions as , I've never moved from this house in 900 years, I was born here and I'll die here.
5/ The materialistic consumer, I worked hard for this , noone is going to come loot my waterlogged telly.
6/ The victim, I did everything I could do , including walking (shock horror) to evacuate from the worst danger areas.
7/ The innocent, I never realised it would be this bad - I don't believe what they say about evacuations anyway.
8/ The trapped. I'm assuming that this is a category. I don't really know.
9/ The sensible, innocent I never knew it was going to be this bad but I trusted that the authorities knew what they were doing and left using whatever meane I had at my disposal.
10/ The wise one, I have a the means to escape ( I save a little, run a car / can afford public transport) and also have prepared some basic essentials (like bottled water) just for such a time. I am not a burden on anyone, I am self sufficient and have enough left over for others. No one in my family is going to be split up relying on the state apparatus to protect me.
Who should we be now - I suspect that NO is filled with all the above and a good deal are worthy of censure. Hopefully when my Katrina strikes I learnt from NO and chose my 'category' rather than allowing fate to choose it for me. -

"The Very Hairs of Your Head"

As an aside - I agree I think God has far more importnt thing sto think about than hair counts. Only Homer Simpsons should care:) However, when game programmers write computer code for realistic parts of people like hair there are some ultra realistic ones where individual hairs are rendered and therefore could be said to be numbered to the programmer (though I doubt that he/she would actually sit and count it - more likely there is an algorithm used to generate it - a bit like dna.) I like to think of God as the ultimate programmer - the one who could write Windows in a fraction of the code and without help and that only crashed when serious sin was involved(like visiting the unix apostates)

by misspeaches ini was just wondering if any of you have been baptised into another religon since leaving the jw's.. if you don't mind sharing i would love to know if it was a monumental decision for you to make?.
what was your status when you did it?

Interesting how some christian churches won't accept the JW baptism. That implies:
1/ They think that baptism is more than a covenant with God - it also implies that they must accept their version of the truth.
2/ They think they have authority to baptise.
3/ They think others therefore don't.
Whatever arguement they use to give themselves authority is a two edged sword as it almost certainly logically disqualifies them at the same time.
If that belief in their authority is flawed then the rest of the baptism belief bundle is rocky especially as possession of 'true doctrines' constitutes a correct baptism (point 1)
So either baptism can be done by anybody (not supported by scripture) and is valid anywhere or there is a requirement for authority (supported by scripture) which either has to come direct from heaven (for it to be valid) or it has to be passed on by someone who got it from heaven.
In this scenario the Catholics have a claim but born agains don't. -

Preston - I agree heads must roll, lessons will hopefully be learnt and new procedures will be put in place but blaming one man right now is just uncpmfortable to me - do that in a few weeks / months etc.. I think laying blame now only ends up reducing collective effort rather than unifying.
Seeing the response of most has made me think seriously about looking at moving to the US at some point (assuming I can get a card) - I want to be amongst people like that.
