Since the bible was put together after the christian 'church' was formed, since the OT was largely superceded by the teachings of Jesus and finally since the New Testament was largely a series of letters to individual churches - why do we put so much credence on a set of translated scriptures written by a culture seperated from our own by 2000 years? And as a back up to this question - if the canon of scriptures are clearly not the sole basis of the early christian church - what should the church be built on?

Gotta defend God here.... This world is clearly not heaven on earth - death may just be the most merciful escape. Son of God did not avoid any of the horrors of this world but went through all (Garden of Gethsemane) Some bad things happen in direct violation of commandments (murder , rape, cancer caused by abusing our bodies with drugs etc..) Bad things happen because we consistently don't learn to love each other - many famines, world illnesses etc.. that could be solved. If we are some sort of eternal being then this time on earth is so short and is the only point in our existence when we can suffer pain, loss etc.. in other words this is our point of comparison for eternity - this may just be the most important thing for us. God doesn't always step in because 1/ we reject Him at every step 2/ We have to learn from our own mistakes 3/ That tragedy is meant to happen - its just time for that peron / group to come home. Maybe we'd be more aware of how much help we got if we could see all the work that goes on in teh background for and on our behalf - I have experiences I just cannot / won't share in this forum but I know that thing shappen on the other side that most of us are blissfully unaware of.

Comparisons: Millenial beliefs - return of Jesus very soon. End of present system of things soon. Only one true church - all others wrong. Jesus has returned (though LDS still await the big return where everyone will see Him) Door to door proselyting. Jesus and God the Father different people (though LDS believe Jehovah is Jesus) Paradise on earth after Jesus return. 1000 year millenium. 6000 years of earth's temporal existence (for LDS this is left quite loose - not necessarily the point of creation - just this order of things.) New scripture with continuing revelation(does the Awake and Watchtower count...?) Governing coucil of twelve (I think JW's have this??) Financial commitment (10% tithing - not certain on the JW side)

I've seen a spirit and had it attack me when I was a missionary. Also took part in a well freaky episode of casting out spirits. Not nice.

84 urinals @ 1.6 gpm per flush = 134.4 gpm.
Every minute 1,035,000 cubic feet air moved over 14 miles of hvac duct work.
Designed to seismic 4 specs (whats that then?)

Sure - Prayer is our time to find out the will of our maker it isn't the time for a wishlist. I've often got on my knees , had a spot of reverence (something almost wholely lacking in our modern world) , cleared my mind of all the noise and then had a good heart to heart with God. I have had feelings , insights, ideas etc.. come to me that have changed who am I - literally. I have got up off my knees thinking, feeling and understanding differently. I have also asked for things and received no answer - nothing , blankness and when I look back that was when I was praying into the bed cover rather than talking to God. God doesn't get angry, mad, bored etc.. with prayers. Just doesn't happen. Prayers just don't get answered when all we are really asking for is 'our will not thine be done.'
