  Crap that hurts! Talking to an ex-LDS

  i just got an email from someone who played a really formative part of my life who's since left the lds church (my rose tinted spectacles) and it really hurts.

  this is why i don't go to ex-lds sites.

  its wierd - a lot of you as posters are at the other end of the tunnel - having left/escaped - but it sure as heck feels gut wrenching when your still 'in' and someone you care about leaves.

  Appreciate all the comments! Even the ones who think my religion is wacky. Of course its wacky - isn't ALL religion wacky?:)

  One thing though I'm not afraid of is truth - I have read every anti-LDS site I can, I've been on fundamentalist sites (not LDS but splinter groups) and have puzzled over loads of things however, I still believe - in fact more so. I even watched the Temple of The God Makers. Why do I read them, because I decided long ago when I was 15 or so that if this LDS faith wasn't good and of worth there was no way I was going to spend 2 years when I got to 19 converting people to something that was false, nor was I spending the rest of my life chasing dreams and putting my kids and family through it. Its the same reason why I'm very interested in all faith systems - I believe in looking and reading about all churches / faiths / philosophies because knowledge gives the best opportunity to make good informed choices.

  I don't visit the ex-LDS because it still feels personal (I don't enjoy feeling that knot in my stomach) and I'd spend all my time preaching - here I can relax knowing no-one here wants to be LDS but that also no one here is exLDS (well no one I know about.)

  As for the Abraham papyrus that the Book of Abraham was translated from those aren't the same as the bits currently in the church's possession, the facsimiles aren't the Book of Abraham. I have studied all the arguements for and against and there are no killer arguements to destroy the books cred. I'll let you know if I find any.

  The greatest unanswered question I have at the moment is about people who are/claim to be gay. I find no scriptural insight into this (other than don't lie man to man) and the LDS church has strong guidleines but no explanations for why. Because I believe that we are eternal and go on for ever and what happens here moulds our characters I wonder what happens when ppl who are gay continue to the next life - do they have to deny who they are? Like I said no answers for this yet - though I do think its wrong - no offense intended.

  I hated it at night when people thought we were muggers but I loved it normally - I really enjoyed my time. I was pretty successful to (pride pride pride) in my two years I baptised 74 ppl :)

  christopher eccleston is the new (and 9th) dr and was previously in the excellent "second coming" (where he played christ who reappear at maine road ... you really had to see it, lol).

  Was anyone else mildy disappointed by it? I really thought it was weak and the dialogue was absolutely naff. I found myself unable to get into the story at all - in fact I'll only be watching it to see Billie from now on.

  All good points! Why do I come here? - always had a love hate relationship with JWs because I was a missionary for my church and they were our only competitors - no other church had the balls to go out on the doorstep. This site gives a good view of the church because there are no agenda's or party lines to follow - no one here is simply reading a pre written text. When I first came I saw some stuff about the LDS church that was wrong / undefended so I wanted to post. I've lurked here for over a year all the time looking for the why's and the how's that people leave - I have the job of keeping people faithful remember I'm still an active LDS Elder's Quorum President. Am I subtly taking digs at the JWs? - perhaps, old habits die hard but most of the time I'm just asking honest simple questions to fill the gaps in my knowledge. And finally why are my posts all unformatted? - because most of the time I use Firefox - down with Microsoft!

  this is a thread for those that have done some research and concluded that evolution is not how various species came to exist.. have you done the research?

  do you believe that species exist as a result of god's direct creation?

  Just to let you know what I think about the talk origins site - I think its full of very clever people talking an awful lot about what other people think (ie they set up so many straw man arguements) - I disagreed with most of the things they said 'creationists' believed. I have read and read on this subject because I'm not a 'blind' believer. What do I know about science - its not all powerful, just because someone uses scientific names they aren't right.

  I never asked why he left - I thought I'd let him tell me if and when he wants to. The church itself will still send out 'home teachers' to vist periodically until either my friend actually has his name removed or requests no visits (even that isn't enough normally!) If anyone from the church sees him in teh street they will treat him just the same as before they'll probably just avoid talking about church.

  i believe that jehovah's witnesses are a "cult".

  to be a "good roman catholic" you have to be "cultic", that's for sure!

  their beliefs and practices, rites and ceremonies are simply weird!

  Seems to me most of this discussion like sooooooo much religious debate comes down to semantics - what my definition of the word means against yours - may I suggest that the real question is perhaps more fundamental: Which belief system is right(and anyone not religious still has a belief system that they think is 'right')? Surely Jesus' band of Christians was a 'cult' when it started (it has every hallmark!) so maybe being labelled a cult isn't the problem. If the cult (I prefer sect! It has a better Latin root meaning:) brings a better life to someone then maybe that's good - if it does the opposite then its bad.
