My sister told me shae gave the talk about Christmas this week at the meeting, she said how great it was that the Watchtower CD was so easy to research for her talk. I asked her to send me the scriptures she based her talk on but in the mean time I sent her this!
In The Time is at Hand, Vol. 2 of the Studies in the Scriptures on page 61 it discusses the date of the birth of Christ. It says "...we could not be certain that the exact day might not be in September about the 27 th , but October 1 st , B.C. is about correct. Nine months back of that date would bring us to about Christmas time, 3 B.C., as the date at which our Lord laid aside the glory which he had with the Father before the world was made and the taking of or changing to human nature began. It seems probable that this was the origin of the celebration of December 25 th as Christmas Day. Some writers on Church history claim, even, that Christmas Day was originally celebrated as the date of the annunciation by Gabriel to the virgin Mary." the Watchtower at one time agreed with Church history that the origin of Christmas was the celebration of the gift of God's son from his conception. Just because this conception happened around a pagan celebration does not make it pagan. If celebrating the gift of God's son is so wrong, how come God allowed the celebration for so long before the Watchtower ever declared it wrong?
In the December 15, 1903 Watchtower, Charles Russell wrote concerning Christmas that even though he did not agree with the date which he said wasn't important, he said "..we may properly enough join with all whose hearts are in the attitude of love and appreciation toward God and toward the Saviour." Both Charles Russell and Joseph Rutherford your first and second presidents celebrated Christmas and even encouraged others to participate in the celebration and to give Watchtower books as gifts. All this was at a time when the Watchtower says that Jesus was inspecting all churches to see which he would pick as the only "faithful and wise servant". How is it that celebrating the gift of God's son was
alright back then but now is such a bad thing that
a person can lose his everlasting life? How is it that God allowed Christians for almost two thousand years to honor the gift of his Son and then
suddenly changed his mind?
Take a look at the Book of Esther. You remember the story - God's people were faced with complete annihilation shortly after Esther became Queen. Without regard for her life Esther approached the king and plead for the life of her people. But the law that called for the death of the Jews had been signed with the king's name and signet ring and could not be revoked. In order to save the Jews, Queen Esther was given the king's signet ring and permission granted for her to write a law that would protect them. The new law allowed the Jews to gather together to protect their lives. Read what happed from Esther 9:1 from the New World Translation.
The Jews were so happy that they were saved from their enemies that they instituted their own holy day or holiday and called it Purim. In Esther 9:9-31 it says "Therefore the Jews...celebrated the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day of gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and for sending presents to one another...And Mordecai wrote these things...to establish among them that they should celebrate yearly the fourteenth day of the month of Adar, as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, as the month which was turned from sorrow to joy for them, and from mourning to a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and joy, of sending presents to one another and gifts to the poor. So the Jews accepted the
custom which
they had begun...they called these days Purim...the Jews established...that without fail they should celebrate these two days every year...
they had decreed for themselves. Was it okay with Jehovah that the Jews created their own holiday, gave it a name and accepted the custom to celebrate Purim every year? The Jews celebrated Purim in Jesus time and still do to this day.
Jesus never condemned the celebration.
Purim was instituted by the Jews and the very day that Satan instituted as a day of death for the Jews was turned around as a
victorious celebration for them. In the same way Christians have the freedom to chose to celebrate the marvelous gift of God's Son. The Christians who originally instituted the celebration of the conception together with the birth of our Savior believed that it was right to honor Jesus on any day, and Christians throughout the centuries have agreed. As a result December 25 th the day that pagans worshiped the sun in the sky, was victoriously taken back for God in order to honor and adore God's gift of His Son. The victory of light over darkness has been so outstanding that the pagan worship of the sun on December 25 th has long disappeared.
If anyone has more info for me I would appreciate it!
