I'm not sure if the "house church" movement is entirely Scriptural. James, the oldest NT epistle, states that believers should not regard a rich person who enters the synagouge. It is therefore a reasonable deduction that the primitive church met in the Jewish synagouge. In reviewing early church history, it appears that the house church was required because of the persecution it was under by the Roman Empire.

House Churches
by Satanus inthe wt prides itself on closely following first century christianity, well, at least preaching.
the bible indicates that christians met in homes, often presided over by the owners of those homes.
they are now commonly called house churches.

California Fires
by leavingwt ini would like to start a thread to discuss all things related to california fires.
my wife tells me that she prefers our hurricane problems over the prospect of fires.
recent news reports say the la media towers are threatened.. .
-
XJW4EVR
Yeah, one of the media towers is for TBN. They had a crawl that I saw last night as I was channel surfing, asking people to pray against the fire. I shot a prayer up, asking that only that tower be destroyed.

Jeff if you are not seeing a password then you are already in the league. Try setting up your team. However, we do need more participants if this is going to go on. Please sign up. It's fun, and a lot less time consuming than a baseball fantasy league.

If You Could Go Back In Time ...
by Big Tex inassuming you could go back in time, and knowing what you know now, is there anything the 2009 you could say to that person you were while you were one of jehovah's witnesses, that would have gotten you out earlier, or easier?.
in other words, have you learned anything now, or while you were exiting, that would have made a difference to you while you were a witness?
and would it make any difference?

I would tell my younger self to not be afraid of being alone. That there is a world full of people that will love you for who you are, not for the religion you belong to.

I heard an old Democrat (he passed away in 2008) often call Harry Truman, "the last great Democrat President". The more I read about him, the more I have to agree with him.

The End...Finally!
by XJW4EVR inthis morning the bastard that attacked my wife with the intention of raping her was sentenced to 25 years to life plus five years.
he must serve a minimum of 30 years.
thank god for the three strikes law (i know that some of the liberals on this board may not join me in my gratitude for the voters of california's wisdom in making that law).

Are you really so right-wing as to think that liberals are against just punishment? Turn off your Fox news, it's not Us vs Them.
No, Missing Link, I do not think all liberals are against just punishment. Just some liberals, and that is why I said some liberals.
Secondly, your assumption that I watch Fox News, is just as assinine as your assumption that I quoted above. However, that is neither here nor there.
Thirdly, it is Us - the law abiding people vs. Them - those that are incapable or unwilling to live in civilizied society.
Lastly, thank you for your input.

The Triune God by Edmund J. Fortman -- PDF!
by cabasilas inthe watchtower library cd-rom cites catholic scholar edmund j. fortman's book the triune god in several places when discusing issues relating to the trinity.
the misuse of fortman by the wt society has been documented at a few websites.
for example, jwfacts.com compares this quote from should you believe in the trinity?

The sloppy scholarship (at best) or utter deception (at worst) in the Trinity brochure is one of the main things that caused me to jettison JW doctrine.

This morning the bastard that attacked my wife with the intention of raping her was sentenced to 25 years to life plus five years. He must serve a minimum of 30 years. Thank God for the Three Strikes Law (I know that some of the liberals on this board may not join me in my gratitude for the voters of California's wisdom in making that law). This bastard's entire criminal history was rehashed during the sentencing. He began his criminal behavior back in 1997 with an armed robbery, as a juvenile. He then had numerous run-ins with the law until 2002 with another armed robbery, and a 2005 attempted armed robbery. The defense attorney tried to get some of the "Strikes" tossed by claiming that the State had not properly linked the bastard to previous crimes. The Judge saw through all that and dismissed the motion.
My wife, declined to go due to issues from her high blood pressure. I made a statement to the judge asking for the full measure of justice to come down on this bastard. The bastard did speak to me, and by extension my wife, and apologized. I am not swayed by his apology.
I want to thank everyone for their prayers and thoughts towards us during this time. It has been greatly appreciated.

Apostle Paul as Roman Soldier
by hamsterbait init was brought up in another thread that paul got his roman citizenship by serving as a soldier for at least 20 years.
this was the only way a non-italian non-roman born could do it.. i remember an illustration - in one of the big books, like "things in which it is impossible for god to lie" or "life everlasting" where saul of tarsus is pictured holding the robes of those who are stoning christians to death.. he is dressed as a roman soldier with a metal breast plate.
anybody have a scan of this?.
-
XJW4EVR
Well, another possibility is that Roman citizenship was simply granted to Paul (and Silas, 16:37f!) by the author(s) of Acts.
I hope that I am mistaken, but it sounds like you are calling Luke a liar.
Just because Paul does not mention his citizenship, it does not mean that he was not a citizen. Mentioning his citizenship simply did not fit the ends of his letters. When I write letters, I don't generally talk about my American citizenship, do you?
