Truly a very sad event.
I remember watching Huell Howser (he does a show on different places in California on PBS) do a show on the Farmer's Market and I really wanted to visit there sometime.
Both of my Grandmothers didn't drive. And my Grandfathers died before this was an issue.
However, my MIL (81) and my spouses Grandmother, (who drove until she was 98!) this was really an issue. Both fought tooth and nail to drive. We would always very gently suggest they stop driving, but they would only become very angry. And I remember my spouse's Grandmother being quite insulted because she had to renew every year. We were always shocked that both of them had managed to pass both the vision and written tests. Finally, health and memory issues forced them both to stop. Though, I do remember my husband's Grandmother had gotten into quite a few fender benders and had actually ripped the rear door off her car because she forgot to close it and it got caught on the garage as she backed out (She was about 95). With the minor accidents, I remember she would always beg the othe parties not to call the police, or contact insurance companies. So, whether or not she was at fault, she would pay for all the damages without question, just because she was so terrified of losing her license. I know that independence was the big issue with both of them.
I'm just so glad they never injured anyone.
