Are JWs "Approval Whores"?
by Scully induring a quiet moment at work the other night, i picked up a back issue of o magazine, one of the current quintessentially authoritative journalistic voices of the modern north american woman.
it was the december 2003 issue, and i was intrigued by the title of the article: "the halo effect" which promised to examine the condition of 'being too good' for one's own good.
the preamble contained the phrase "self-sacrificing" and i was immediately zapped by that standard jw buzz-word and the article's suggestion that being "self-sacrificing" is not all it's cracked up to be.. you can read the article here: stop seeking approval.

Thanks for that great article Scully!
Its actually made me feel much better about myself. It gave clear concrete form to thoughts that have been germinating in my pea brain for a long time.
Of "the currently overcompensating for his runtiness, so he won't publically admit to reading O Class"

The mice that are being used are genetically modified so that the antibiotic will turn the gene on and off, so this will not work on just anyone... unless you want your genome rewritten.
Good Catch Elsewhere.
Designer research animals...we're getting closer to that bright brave new world every day.
I'm hopeful that they'll find the natural sites within the genome that regulate expression of Myc and other cancer related genes. If they can make designer proteins that can inhibit expression of those specific genes then one can expect very similar results.

Made to be an outsider in one world, and personally feeling like one in the jw universe: validation and acknowledgement for who I was was something I really needed and never got from the dubs.
But I've met up with a whole slew of people later on at university and work that started to make me feel a bit better about myself. Little stuff always did it. Because they were without agendas or conditions.

The Stem Cell experiment, good or bad?
by Brummie init was discussed by the president & kerry, it will be all over the news over the next few days because of the death of a hero, for some reason the stem cell issue scares me and i dont think i could support it, taking some voiceless life to improve another, maybe i am misinformed?
it all seems unethical.
i dont know all the facts, can you enlighten me please?.

But its as much a life as any other living thing.
Mmm... life, as we know it, is characterised by MOTION, REPRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION, GROWTH and STIMULUS RESPONSE . Groups of cell, whilst being 'live' do not sometimes qualify as 'life' by the above definiton.True enough, which is why I should correct my statement to "But its still alive like any other living thing." -which wouldn't affect/alter any of my other points. But here's something to mull over.
The zygote consumes the stored energy from the ovum. Cell multiplication is growth. The cells within the zygote respond to chemical factors from adjacent cells and they influence the differentiation of each other. Now just because that biological entity at that stage, is not yet developed into the form where it will have motion or later reproduction, one can technically draw the line at that point. I can see your point. Its a logical and objective spot to choose IMHO. But taking all the other criteria into consideration, I don't think biologists would generally deny that zygotes are a form of life, only because its at an early stage that doesn't manifest all the criteria.
Sixofnine
What's more, we can grow these cells the same way we grow cells for all types of medical research right now, so if we are "playing god", then so what? Are we "playing god" when we do anything positive for humanity that overcomes nature's problems?
Re-read my post. I'm all for stem cell research. I've got no qualms with the use of these cells because IMHO destroying them cheapens life more than using those cells to help others.
The fact that abortions naturally occur, even say more than half of the time, only speaks to imperfections of the whole system. I'm the last person who'd say its all sacred. But just because living things are easily snuffed out doesn't negate them being alive for a time. I want to be clear, I'm not equating their use to killing a person because biologically speaking it hasn't reached that stage yet. But I still think zygotes are alive and a form of life.

Let me start off by saying that I'm for stem cell research.
But I'd have to disagree with the viewpoint that the zygote or ball of undiferentiated cells is not a life. Its not a "life" as in say a person or fetus. If that's what is meant then I see can that. But its as much a life as any other living thing.
That said, I believe that procuring these zygotes should be done in a dignified manner like organ donation. Using unwanted embryos in stem cell research is attributing them a greater value than just destroying them.

Is Global Warming a Myth?
by Sirona ini've been reading about global warming recently and to be honest its getting more confusing by the minute.. some say there is so much evidence that it is caused by humans (burning of fossil fuels etc) but some say that it is a natural cycle that we shouldn't worry about.. http://www.junkscience.com/news/robinson.htm.
what is the truth?
are you concerned about our planet?.
-
Midget-Sasquatch
Global temperatures have gone up and down in cycles thats true. And those with pro-fossil fuel agendas can throw doubt on the adverse impact humans have had on the temperature. That's because a fair amount of research so far has shown an increase in temperature, but within the statistically expected norm. There's also the argument that the earth naturally can accomodate and buffer changes in amounts of carbon.
But just like any of you who've taken chemistry knows, any buffer has a limited capacity. Once its overshot, then we'll see some real significant changes. Will we overshoot the buffering capacity? I don't know. But just because we're not obviously at that point doesn't mean we should carry on care free as the pro-fossil fuel advocates want us to.

Remembering Halloween As A JW Kid . . .
by Corvin ini remember my mom and my aunt making us kids open the door to the trick-or-treators and instead of giving them candy, we had to put wt and awake!
magazines (back issues) in their bags.
how embarrassing.. anyone else have the same experience?.

Handing out magazines?!!!!
Thankfully I grew up in a slightly more relaxed foreign language congregation. Only had to endure a near decade with the generally more fanatical english dubs.
For the longest time, my Dad would tape up a sign on the door saying "Sorry-No Candy" and we'd leave the lights out and just watch TV downstairs. The house only got egged a couple of times.
When we had to switch congegations other witnesses made a fuss about my Dad using the word Sorry and he ommitted it. Our house got egged a whole lot more afterwards.

"Superman" was the first movie I ever saw as a child. The character as portrayed by Reeves is one of the few that has ever made an impression on me.
Then in more recent years Reeves himself has amazed me with his determination to continue living, always trying to overcome challenges, for himself and for those that love him.
I wish you really could hear this Chris. You from beginning to end were Superman to me.

My experience as a MS
by DaCheech ini have been a ministerial servant for 15 years.
after 1994-95 "generation change" and 1999 "being hit by hurricane and no wt/brothers help".
i had serious doubts.

DaCheech, I feel for you.
I qualified as an MS despite zero, nadda, honest to god NO comments at WT studies, below average field service stats and zero butt kissing. But I was one of the three young males that were not obviously and blatantly disregarding the rulez. I admit I did have backbone envy for a while.
I felt like the guy who gets a wish turned around on him from a mischievous genie.
I got screwed alright - just not by the little hot rebel chicks in the same KH!
Thankfully I was never asked about being an elder...cause that would have definitely started turning the wheels of the most brain dead dubs.
