  Ontario bans religious arbitration: implications for JWs

  ontario has banned binding religious arbitration.

  logically, this should include the jws handling divorce matters (where they claim they have the authority to grant "scriptural divorce" and use this to control the future marriages of legally divorced jws.).

  but, i can also see this law trickling down to the blood issue and child molestation 2 witness policy.

  This alone has implications. I know of a case where a JW woman was being severely beaten by her "JW" husband. She didnt want to leave the borg, and they would not give her a "scriptural divorce" and therefore would not recognize the legal divorce. She was threatened with DFing if she re-married or started dating other people.

  Now, I really think actions like that could easily be challenged under this law.

  The elders aren't dividing anything up among the mates. That was always done by a court of law. I don't see how being disfellowshipped is something which this law can block. I know the law is about protecting the person from harmful religious rulings. But I don't think it means that this law can force any religion to keep any particular person as its member.

  How much of an impact will this really have? The Witnesses always had to go through the law to get their legal divorces, whether or not it was "scripturally" permitted. As far as I can gather, this new ban doesn't mean that the Society will have to allow marriages in their own kingdom halls of those who got "unscripturally" divorced. So whats the difference? How much of an issue is this anyway? Cuz from what I see most of the time people are splitting up after finding out that one or both of them were having affairs.

  While Dorothy Dunnett's writing style took a little getting used to, I was hooked by the protagonist "Claes"/"Nicholas de Fleury".

  Jesus = Ancient Pagan gods??

  i'm reading a book and this morning i got to a part where it claimed that the life of jesus was very similar, if no downright copied on ancient pagan myths of different men-gods.

  (amongst them osiris, dionysos, attis, adonis, bacchus and mithra.).

  it said that in the different versions of the stories these elements could be found:.

  I remeber reading some of that stuff. I also found the movie The Clan of the Cave Bear interesting to watch. I think that the modern day gore fans would be interested in a movie adaptation of the Bacchae by Euripides.

  Back to the topic, the Dionysian cults and Mithraic cults have that same idea of ingesting the totem to commune with their god and somehow share in that god's power.

  If Paul were a Herodian (as at least one scholar posited), he'd definitely have a vested interest in keeping the Establishment going. There were a number of messianic movements (anti-roman) in Palestine around Paul's time. James the Just (the Bishop of the Jerusalem Church if not the first archbishop for the entire early christian movement) was apparently very popular with most of these Palestinians. Someone Rome and the Herodians wouldn't mind quieting. If there's actually some truth to the PseudoClementines, then Paul physically attacked James (with a piece of wood) at the steps of the Temple. Its tantalizing to consider the idea that when that approach proved ineffective he opted to co-opt the movement with an influx of Gentiles, and teachings syncretized with some of the popular pagan mystery religions

  Tom Harpur's The Pagan Christ makes most of those same parallels. Its a very easy read and should be in most public libraries. But, like me, you may be disappointed by how it doesn't go into much depth, which IMHO makes other books like The Jesus Mysteries more interesting.

  the general feeling on this website is that all religions have gods people in them.so why does it matter to you all.that you believe you were lied too?you show me a religion that is with out fault?show me a religion that has the total truth from the bible?

  The WTS being wrong about alot of beliefs wouldn't be such a "Big Deal", if they weren't so dogmatic and controlling -- to the detriment of individual jws and families. You also can't expect us to overlook the trust they broke when we find out they deliberately lie many times. And finding out that its all done for their own self-interests is just more disillusioning.

  in part this thread is an apology to dansk.. by way of an explanation; about a year ago i posted to someone that they should show little compuncture about lying to a body of elders, since the wts would only apply theocratic warfare to them, and do the same.

  dansk (rightly in my opinion) reprimanded me about it, though i uncomfortably defended my position at the time.. well, i was raised better than that.

  "two wrongs don't make a right", and lying was never on the agenda in our household.

  I appreciate how you're sympathetic to those who try to keep "in good standing" only for family. But you're right about the gradual negative toll that lying can take on a person's character. Your post is very helpful to me making me stop and reflect, and consider another option: one that will strengthen the atrophied trait of genuineness. Thank You very much Ross for your thoughts.
