  if you could turn back time, where and when would you go?.

  i'd go back to the 80's.... .

  life was more fun then, just about everything was legal.

  The 80's...OMG!!

  Leg warmers, pastel pink and grey, stone wash demin, break dancing, ghetto blasters, Boy George, the Thompson Twins, DEVO, I could go on and on - those were the days. A packet of cigarettes were $1.98 and cartons of milk had only just replaced bottles. My favourite TV show was Little House on the Prairie and I was so in love with Leif Garrett.

  Ah yes the 80's....back when I was young and foolish! If I could have chosen a different path, I would have listened to my teachers and furthered my education. My jw mother couldn't see past the new system, so university studies were out of the question. If only I knew then what I know now.

  I like my pillow

  when ever i travel to different locations around the world, or just down the highway.

  i have to bring my own pillow.

  it is just the right size, just the right shape and i even like the smell.

  Dragon....great to see you....welcome back and once again you're posts ring a few bells for me.

  The 'comfort' element that the religion offers long timers is quite distinctive. My jw mother and grandmother fit into that 'i love my pillow' category with ease. My mother knows there are a lot of things that she dislikes about the religion (ie. shunning me and my brother - and her sister) and my grandmother also tries to justify herself when she indulges in birthday gifts for her non-witness kids or grandkids. Yet they continue to stay loyal - despite their personal views.

  My sister who was inactive is going through the motions to reactivate herself - yet she knows about the child abuse scandals and the changes in the structure of their beliefs, but she is comfortable with what she knows - she feels safe.

  We can't change them, we can only hope that one day they find the desire to want change.

  Nice to have you here Dragon - I really enjoy your posts.

  Is There Anything in Life That You Truly Regretted?

  one thing that stands out for me is how i never went to my own grandmother's burial because, after all she was dead and during the day she died it was on a thursday night and i had 2 parts to handle so i performed them well and at the end gave the congregation, "a progress report" of how my grandmother had been doing since she was in the hospital, suffering from cancer.

  that evening i told the congregation that she had died that afternoon.

  many people cried at that point but later i was commended by many for not missing a meeting that evening.......

  Dramas

  one of the funniest things i will ever remember as a jw are the "big dramas" at the assemblys.

  it was amazing how everyone would sit through the torture of the infinate talks and "skits" with an incredibly bored look on their faces, yet when the drama got closer, the apathetic faces piped up, became animated, excited.

  it was, as far as i could see the "best of the worst" piece of the programme, and by god, even though i spent almost the entire time at the assemblies outside feeding ducks, i was always in one of the front rows for the drama.

  I remember feeling like a regular movie star after being one of the main characters in a drama one year. I was terribly disappointed that I never got to dress up in a bible character costume as it was a modern day drama....but Oh the fame and the glory LOL.

  That same year I started using the internet, so rather then use my REAL name, I changed my user name to my drama character - I still go by Rebecca but I dropped the Jones.

  The best drama was when Lot's wife turned into a pillar of salt....that was back in the 80's.....but what a lot of goo'ing and gaa'ing over that one LOL.

  I knew an elder who would not allow his wife to visit their grown disfellowshipped son. Some time on the son had an accident and as a result was wheelchair bound. He had no one...as all his family were JW and were forbidden to have anything to with him. He couldn't cope alone, and he took his own life.

  Question about JWs and adultery

  if a single jw brother and a married sister are involved (secretly wishing her husband will commit adultery so she can get a divorce) and get caught, can't the husband get a divorce and the couple just get df'd for a year, get reinstated, and be together?

  what's so hard about waiting a year if everyone welcomes them back and they end up together?

  does this religion have anything to do with jehovah?

  Is this how it works?

  Yes, this is how it works - sometimes. I have associated with many congregations and it was not uncommon to see couples who had broken up and with one committing adultery and then getting DF.....who then remarries and makes a come back. Usually the one making the come back has to move to another congregation where they are not known in order to avoid awkwardly bumping into their ex. I know some couples who have remarried and who remain friends and who share their kids between the two 'new' families. I also know some couples where the reinstated one has a new family with their new spouse and lives happily ever after while their estranged partner forges on unaffected or who secretly resents having to embrace their ex as part of the brotherhood.

  You are right, it is all very hypocritical....but as long as they show the elders that they are repentent, they can get away with it. I think the reason why some want to be reinstated is because they usually have family who are still in, and they don't want to be shunned....and so there you have it.

  Did You Know That You Could Be Disfellowshipped For French Kissing?

  a number of years ago, a body of elders discussed the matter of "french kissing".

  they came to the conclusion that this practice of "french kissing" was a disfellowshipping offense on the grounds of "engaging in loose conduct".

  one young couple were judicially reproved for their "sin" and the elders felt that since the matter was not widely known, that they would be "privately reproved".

  I think some extreme viewpoints are more an individual thing than a cultural one. We had an elder who thought colourful neck ties were offensive and worldly - of course he was a man who preferred to wear pooh-brown suits as opposed to navy or dark green.

  Now the only time I would consider french kissing to be a DF offence would be if one of the parties were already married to someone else....this could have been the case. If so, then it could have been termed as loose conduct just as holding hands with someone not your mate is also termed loose conduct.
