i was surprised to read in chapter 20 that sarah was in fact abrahams half sister.

in verse 12 of this chapter, it mentions how abraham and sarah both had the same father, but different mothers.

Also, the Bible doesn't say God "endorsed" it. Just because it's in the Bible, doesn't mean or imply that God wanted it to happen.

I whole heartedly agree with this statement. The example of Jacobs sons taking revenge because of what happened to Dinah their sister is a clear example. In vs 30 of chapter 34, Jacob was troubled because of his sons actions. It is sometimes hard to read between the lines, as the bible in these accounts tends to get straight to the point.

Looking at the whole picture helps us to see that such blatant disrepect for the leader of Gods people (Jacob) at that time had terrible consequences. What Shechem did was a dishonor, not only to the leader of Gods people Jacob/Israel but a mark of disrespect and mockery to God himself. Whether endorsed or not, the outcome was that this whole unfortunate episode now made Gods people stand out amongst the cities throughout the region (Gen 35:5).

some questions on the book of genesis

decided to read the bible from start to finish as i have never done so properly.. some questions that i have and that some of you might be able to help me with are.

1/ in genesis 1 it says god created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th.

in fact in vs 31 of chapter 1- with refernece to the 6th day the bible writer even refers to the evening and the morning of that paticular day.

Good point restrangled; I was kind of thinking along those lines myself. Verse 1 says that God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning. It does not say how long ago this was; or how long it took God to do so. The earth could have been without form and void for millions of years! Who knows?

It is only in verses 3-5 of Genesis chapter 1, when God divided the light from the darkness, that the first evening and morning is mentioned, thus becoming the first day. This to me would make more sense of this portion of scripture.

Yes i often wondered what on earth was happening regarding Lot. Once, might have been a terrible mistake, if indeed he was totally and utterly drunk (which seems quite extraordinary for a good man saved by the angels of God); but twice makes the mind boggle?

Reading through Genesis has been an eyeopener for me. I was surprised to read in chapter 20 that Sarah was in fact Abrahams half sister. In verse 12 of this chapter, it mentions how Abraham and Sarah both had the same father, but different mothers. I realise that having many wives pre mosaic law was tolerated by God, but was quite surprised at reading this about the patriarch of Israel. I take from this, that this was tolerated for some time also? Anyone with any thoughts on this?

Some questions that I have and that some of you might be able to help me with are

1/ In Genesis 1 it says God created the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th. In fact in vs 31 of chapter 1- with refernece to the 6th day the bible writer even refers to the evening and the morning of that paticular day. Is this to be taken literally rather than figuratively? The reason I am asking this question, is because if God can accomplish anything, why shouldnt we take this as being literal, just as the writer was inspired to write it? Please enlighten me with your views on this.

2/ In vs 17 of chapter 4 Cain had a son named Enoch. He then went on to build 'a city' calling the name of this city after his son. Where did all these people suddenly come from, in that he was able to build a city? surely cities referred to back in those days were really simply small towns?

No , i dont believe bigotry is a mental illness, but an illness of sorts. It is something that is learned and passed on through generations. It is a cancer that exists within many societies around the world and is brainwashing at its ugliest. It has the ability to poison the minds of just about anyone and at any level of society; affecting individuals views by causing tunnell vision. It is sad to think that the the average bigot( or indeed racist) will judge another human being based solely on the religious group that they are born into, country they come from or skin colour.

Germany during Nazi rule and south Africa during the apathied era are prime examples. Entire peoples brainwashed by bigots and racists. History has shown how bigotry and racism is encouraged and why it prevails. I believe that if there is a strong undercurrent of bigotry or racism within a society to the extent that the average man woman or even child makes bigoted or racist comments without realising that they are in fact causing offence to others, then that society has that cancer.

The question is why is it allowed to fester within society. History has shown that it is those within powerful positions that can either allow bigotry and racism to fester or tackle this serious problem head on. I strongly believe that if the police authorities, politicians, the juditiary system, business and religious leaders collectively and wholeheartedly united to tackle this cancer; then and only then will we see peoples disgraceful attitudes change. Sadly, I take a very pessimistic view given that we live in a world full of hate and prejudice, that Man will never achieve this. I believe that only God can solve this horrible problem once and for all.
