  from what i've been gathering around the internet, jw's are taught that after highschool, higher eduation is not needed.

  they put the idea in one's head that it costs way too much to go to school,and put fear that they'll have a lot of money owed and will be in debt forever.

  okay that may be true, but they do not tell you that there are jr college that cost little to nothing to go, sometimes even free.

  Agreed, that's the real issue. They wouldn't even have to be intentionally evil to come up with this. Just work the numbers. Of those that leave the org, how many have college educations? From their perspective, it would seem clear that SOMETHING happens when you're at college that "corrupts your thinking". (In actual fact, it STARTS your thinking, and therein lies the problem!)

  the reason for splitting up the watchtower editions in a public and a study version.

  the reason is the same as for splitting up the watchtower society in ccjw, kingdom support, inc, religious order of jw (and local convention planning organisations, read the anderson-files about having no agents everywhere), just juridical!

  Copyright laws don't care how you're using the material, or how the material is used by the author. If we take a freely distributed -- but copyrighted -- tract (from any source) and post it in its entirety without the copyright holder's permission, we're in violation of the copyright laws.

  The bigger issue, though, is that they can sue you. Remember when the Watchtower went after Quotes*? Maybe he would've won his case, but he couldn't afford to go to court over it. Could any of us? I know I couldn't.

  The Watchtower knows they'd have any individual over a financial barrel.

  I'm not saying this ability to sue had anything to do with the change to the mags, only that they surely can sue regardless.

  * "Quotes" refers to a poster on JWD that maintained a website of quotes from the Watchtower. These quotes alone (without commentary) showed the Watchtower to have flip-flopped, taught variously contradictory things, called themselves "prophets", everything. They sued him for copyright infringement. Now the site is gone. Bastards. (The site has reemerged here and there under different names, though not from the original poster)

  My first thought is how happy I am to not be under the thumb of these kooks anymore. I don't want to hunt or fish, but if I do, flipping through the "Index" to find the "current thinking on the matter" isn't something I'll need to dick with. Yay!

  The second thing that struck me was this line:
  "Furthermore, Christians obey all of "Caesar's" laws regarding hunting and fishing, whether the authorities enforce them or not."

  Unless, of course, the Christian happens to live in Mexico, is in need of a "yes, I performed my military service" card, and has a few bucks to bribe the government official. Then it's ok. But all other times, we obey "Caesar's" laws.

  Faithful and Discreet, eh? Well, zero outta two ain't bad...

  watching the democratic debates i was struck how every candidate, save dennis kucinich, pledged to prevent iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

  iran is a sovereign state, diplomacy which ends in 'you can't have this, but we can' will not work.

  what would happen if another country told us we couldn't have nukes?
