I guess y'all read about Peckerhead. Well, the little critter's still coming around when it gets hungry. Starting to think it's a he now, don't ask why. Oh and he's spoiled rotten! Turns up his nose at crickets! Takes a cricket and tosses it on the floor and then pecks hard at my hand to get the mealworms. And yeah, Peckerhead gets what Peckerhead wants....I can't help it, I got a soft spot for critters. Everyone else at the shop just loves him, too. He'll fly to the first person he sees if I'm not around, and they all know to go to the top middle drawer of my toolbox for the worms. Come to think of it, so does Peckerhead.
So I'm not going to try and relocate him. He's flying good now and not dependent on me, just comes in sometimes for a free meal.
Yesterday I went to the pet store. Peckerhead made me enjoy birds, so I decided to adopt one a little more domesticated. I got a baby gray cockatiel.
Named it Hannibal Bendrr. (yeah had to get egotistical, but if you can't name your pet after yourself THEN you have a problem!)
After the first molting, I'll find out if the name fits or if it's a chick. (ha ha bad pun)
Seriously though, he (I'm assuming male) is so sweet. Has to be on my shoulder all the time.
I'm letting him listen to the police scanner during the day, maybe he'll learn to talk. Cockatiels can talk from what I understand.

Hello Jon. I am sorry to hear about your loss and I know it must hurt more when thinking about your pact. You and only you can say farewell to your friend in your own way. No traditional ceremony will ever take the place of the goodbye we all say in our hearts to those taken from us. We say that by the love we feel and the sadness that overwhelms us at the loss of a loved one, not by ceremony. A funeral is only a gathering of people, the loss is still carried away from that place to be faced alone. Neither I nor anyone else here can tell you how to say goodbye. That can only come from your heart, and my friend your heart WILL tell you how and when.
Nothing like this is ever easy, and closing a letter even more so. So I'll just stop here and tell you that I and everyone else is thinking about you and we care about you in the bad times as well as the good and you and I both know you will make the decision that best comforts you and honors your friend.

Thank you so much, all of you. It really meant a lot to me to hear from you here and in the emails you sent. While I didn't respond to the emails personally and I apologize I read them and felt the care and concern and I appreciate everything you have said.
Sometimes it takes something bad to make us see good. It showed me that this is a wonderful group of people who care for those they have not stood face to face with.
You all have a wonderful night my friends.

Ok, at first thought I wanted to suggest a song from one of David Allan Coe's unreleased X-rated albums.
Then I thought how cool it would be to play "Free Bird" by Skynyrd.
"Family Tradition" or "All my Rowdy Friends" by Hank Williams, jr.
"God Bless the USA" by Lee Greenwood.
"Walkin on the Fightin Side of Me" by Merle Haggard.
But then, you can't just have country.
"Sanitarium" by Metallica (back before they sold out and got haircuts and went MTV pop).
I guess I'm gonna go with a song I used to love as a young dub and still enjoy to this day.
Heart of Steel by Manowar.
Build a fire a thousand miles away
to light my long way home.
I ride a comet.
My trail is long to stay.
Silence is a heavy stone.
I fight the world, and take all they can give.
There are times my heart hangs low.
Born to walk against the wind.
Born to hear my name.
No matter where I stand, I'm alone.
Stand and fight!
Live by your heart.
Always one more try,
I'm not afraid to die!
Stand and fight!
Say what you feel!
Born with a heart of steel!
Burn the bridge behind you.
Leave no retreat.
There's only one way home.
Those who laugh and crowd the path and cut each others' throats
will fall like melting snow.
They'll watch us ride with fire in our eyes.
They'll bow their heads,
their hearts will hang low.
Then we'll laugh and they will kneel
and know this heart of steel
was too hard to break
too hard to hold.mike.

On Tuesday, my mom called me at work to tell me my aunt Linda passed away. She'd had diabetes and kidney problems for years. Tuesday, she was on dialysis and her blood pressure bottomed out and she just went to sleep and never woke up. Linda was a long-time Witness, as was her husband-my mom's brother and I loved both of them dearly. Linda was an old hippie who became a zealous Witness. Billy served in Vietnam for a while, got tired of it and went AWOL. He was picked up at work one day and served a minimal sentence.
I remember when they met and dated and got married. Linda was just plumb crazy. She'd say whatever was on her mind whenever and wherever. Billy (I take it he goes by Bill now, but I will always call my uncle Billy) was the polar opposite. Very reserved and quiet. That difference only made them better together. They had one child together, and Linda almost died in childbirth. Fortunately, Linda lived to see Sage Marie Routhier blossom from a wonderful baby to a beautiful young lady of 13. Sage is dealing with things well, my mom tells me. She is being strong for Billy. I have not seen any of them in close to 10 years, except for once when Billy was at my parents' house when I stopped by and then he didn't speak.
It was Tuesday that I heard about it. I didn't find out about the funeral until about an hour ago-it's tomorrow about 3 hours away. So unfortunately I will not be able to go. I pointed out to mom that she could have told me before tonight and I would have gotten the day off and arranged to be there. She went into the usual shit about "our hands are tied" when it comes to contact. At which point I started to get a little mad and told her it was their choice not mine, that I don't make it a point to shun someone because I am told to. That they are "told" not to have any contact with me. She tried to say it was scriptural and I told her I did not agree with that and it is wrong and unloving and I hoped they would see that one day. She didn't get hostile or defensive, but I sensed "the wall" coming up. She said we don't need to argue, and I agreed. We left on a good note, we'll talk again this weekend as we do every Sunday or Saturday. I got Billy's number to call him since I can't make the funeral.
It was a different story when I called him. He answered the phone and when he realized who I was said "Michael! I'm so glad you called.....but I guess we really can't talk." That hurt. It was on the tip of my tongue to fire back with something, but I just couldn't. I told him I was sad about Linda and was thinking about him and Sage. He quickly went from that to telling me to "come back". How I should repent and all. Well I repented 9 years ago, I was sorry for what I did right after I did it, but that's another story.
After almost 10 years of no contact with a very close uncle [until my df] the conversation took only a few minutes. He was the one to end it, but I said "Billy I love you man". He paused, and said "*WE* love you too". And hung up.
Not "I love you", "WE".
If I were able I still would be at the funeral tomorrow, even knowing what to expect from a JW funeral. I'll say my goodbyes privately to aunt Linda by thinking about the happy and funny memories I have of her.

Most hated Rules and Regulations
by Bendrr inthe thread about "clinking" got me to thinking.. what were the rules you hated most?
rules that were just so boneheaded as to be infuriating.. there are so many rules and regulations to follow as a dub.
some rules may not even be able to be referenced in the publications, at least not firmly and clearly.

Michael3000, it wasn't a Harley I saw. Just a rice burner. But I can just imagine a V-twin's roar waking up the GB on a Sunday morning!

There are so many rules and regulations to follow as a dub. Some rules may not even be able to be referenced in the publications, at least not firmly and clearly. Some may even be strictly word of mouth, or enacted locally by an elder or CO and treated as law.
So which ones are y'alls' aggravations?Mine?
A Witness's car: may not have a loud muffler (like a glasspack or dual exhaust), should not be a two-door, should not have a loud stereo.
No motorcycles for dubs! (I knew this was "unofficial" when I saw a motorcycle in the parking lot at Watchtower farms, parked next to an old Ford Galaxie with a hot motor and dual exhaust)
The "quota" was 10 hours a month in field service.
At some wedding receptions, the "rule" was only the married couples may dance.
No camoflouge clothing, it means you are imitating the military. (I never quit wearing those army surplus camo pants, great for working in lawn care)
No tie-dyed shirts.
No tee-shirts of bands or sports teams. (idolatry, but I wore my Pink Floyd t-shirt to quick builds anyway)mike.

Who was the Strangest on the Doors?
by individual inyes, who was the strangest person you ever met in the field service, or what was the strangest experience?
i once met a man who claimed that he had invented everything, including the hovermower, the hovercraft and the xylophone.
he said he created the hovermower out of dustbin lids attached to an old lawnmower.

Hey, Francoise. You went to Hazard? Did you happen to run into a couple of good ole boys in an orange Dodge? ;-)

I sure remember my years in field service way out in the rural areas. We used to go out in Crawford and Taylor County, Georgia. Even in the late seventies you'd still see the occasional outhouse. I've driven through Taylor county a few times in the last year or so, and things haven't changed a whole lot.
I guess the strangest person I met was in 1989 right outside of Warner Robins Georgia, home of a big Air Farce Base. A sister was taking our car group to one of her return visits. She turned on this little driveway that looked more like a walking path. It wound around through the woods and it was obvious very few cars had ever been on it. Well what do you know, but there actually was a house back there! This small 1800's era house with the open central breezeway and yes, the kitchen was a separate structure. So was the bathroom.
There was definitely no phone, and I can't be sure about power lines and no car in the yard. Oh, yeah and of course the old-style washing machine with matching clothesline.
An elderly black lady lived there, had for all of her life. The sister told me the lady couldn't tell for sure when she was born.
She was friendly enough, but that day she was busy so "didn't have time to talk to no Jee-hovies but it's sure nice to see you again Miss Angie!".
I was dying to go back again and get to talk to this lady, just listen to stories she could probably tell, but I never got to go back.
The old folks you may run into way back in the woods are usually some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Don't make it a quick visit, just leaving literature. Sit down and talk to them, many of them are alone most of the time, you will enjoy every minute of it.
