MEGADUDE-
Russell's quote from the Watchtower 7/15/1906
"....so I paid Mr. Barbour's expenses to come to see me at Philadelphia...to show me fully and Scripturally, if he could, that the prophecies indicated 1874 as the date at which the Lord's presence and the harvest began. He came and the evidence satisfied me."
FANTASTIC! I kept seeing Barbour's name come up but kept failing to see a literal meeting between a Millerite and Russell.
I knew I should have posted sooner....would have saved me A LOT of time sifting though this mess. You guys have been a great help and given me much to to look at,
THANK YOU.
Now, one more question:
Who was the founder of the Church of God? I read in an article that this is considered an Adventist group and that it came out of the Millerite's as well. This is the Church of God that spawned Christian Identity which influenced Aryan Nation. Does anyone have any information on this?
Thanks again, everyone.

Did you pray because you felt like it or because you were told to?
by JH inwitnesses pray many times a day.
at the field service, at the meetings, before each meal and even more.. i don't know if you're like me, but i didn't pray because i felt like it, but because i was told to.. personally, 1 long honest prayer a week would have been much better than 20 routine prayers.
did you feel that it was natural to pray 3 times a day or more?.

I only did it because I was told to but I usually wouldn't really pray....I'd just let my mind wander off until it was over...........except if I thought demons were around. I would pray for real then.

"George W Bush is a God fearing Christian, he says.

He's from a brand of god-fearers that are trying to speed up the rapture. -

What have you done to counteract the 'cult of Jehovah's witnesses?'
by AK - Jeff ini know that many here would place jehovah's witnesses on a list of 'cults'.
personally i don't think they meet all the standard definition - but would class them as an 'authoritarian sectarian movement'.
at any rate, most of us would not want our neighbors to get caught up in the mind-twisting that we endured and from which we finally removed ourselves.. that said - have any engaged in successfull enterprises to counter the movement?

Elderwho-
I think that there's a more classical psychological profile perspective that Ak Jeff might be coming from. In which there is only one leader, instead of several members of a Governing Body--like Jim Jones or David Koresh. Everything centers around one god-like leader. The JWs have many traits of cults and could be called one but it doesn't have that one guy on top. It's been awhile since I took that social psychology class that covered cults but I do remember that JWs didn't fit the profile to a T....came pretty close though. -
