that phrase -- along with "weapons of mass destruction" -- is a term that i hope soon passes out of popular use.
i wonder who coined that phrase: "shock and awe.
" i'm sure they are terribly proud of themselves... the idiots.
That phrase is pure unaldulterated propaganda. The circumstances in which this war is being waged dictate that the Gov show everyone involved that it means that it will accomplish Saddam's ouster from power no matter what. Especially for the troops in Iraq that intend to fight it out to the end. The undelying message is clear. Resist the US forces and we will do everything in our power to kill you. Typical war-type stuff.

These are definitely uncertain times we're living in. I for one cannot overlook the eloquence of the responses of the French President. He makes very good points about how the situation should continue to be handled. I can't see a good reason why more dialogue can't be effective. I also understand why the present administration has deemed it neccessary to take a hard line towards the despots in the region. Saddam Hussein is no Hitler, however even in these times appeasement and flouting of International interdicts should not be allowed.
back off will ya?!!
or at least try picking on someone else for a change...i actually happen to agree w/wednesday about people who serve being at least be able to communicate with you as the customer...i don't speak laotian, chineese, vietnameee, any african language, and just enough spanich to get me in trouble or slapped eheh... yesterday i went in to get a postal stamp from 7-11...well the poor soul (he looked vietnameese probably just started and he couldn't get was i was asking for whatsoever...i asked about three times then just smiled and walked out...i went accross the street where the guy from lebbanon knew exactly what i wanted and gladly sold me stamps...i actually like going there better cuz its his store and not another corporate tool...(i want to be my own corporate tool) eheheheh.
i deal with it every day and lemme telll you sumpin...people who want to learn english and thrive here will, those that don't will keep serving you at thankless jobs all over the country...almost all of my foreign students gladly take esl classes (notice: english as a second language) that's right...they learn the other language to make their learning experience easier, which includes interacting and being a part of our culture, and existence in our country better...not only does it make their lives better/easier, but it makes my job and existence easier.
bigboi...it is a touchy subject, and I deal with it every day...There are tons of good things to say about the immigrants that come here to live and thrive...Many times communication can be accomplished without conversing elloquently, or even typing well for that matter, its all about intent. Some can't see the forest for the trees though and would rather harp on meaningless typos versus the meaning behind what they are saying. Now that is irritating indeed...As well, communication is a two way street...I'll give you an example...I went to my girlfriend's relatives for XMAS...there was a girl there from Guatamala who had been here for more than 3 years and from what my girlfriend tells me she knows full well how to speak and understand English...well during the whole party while talking to her she chose to use a translator...kind of like some facade or whatever...that I do not like...another example...the young clerks at the grocery speaking in Spanish to each other and when they don't like a customer they say so alright, but in Spanish, so I would imagine the little old lady or man that was a tad difficult gets called a bad name and they never know it....they try to do this to me at school and I just smile and say yes, I am a cabron and I do like mis grisas gracias...I also remind them that they might be sitting in my class some day so please be careful what they say...
Good points all around Valis. I also don;t like the fact that many immigrants seem to put on the pretense of being ignorant of the language when in fact they are not. Maybe if there were some standard to adhere to then that could be a good deterrerent to that type of deception. I work with a guy who has a very thick South American accent. He has been in this country probably longer than I've been alive and I know for a fact that he uses his accent to make ppl think he's less intelligent and as a consequence is not well liked on the job. I sometimes tell him that when he's at home he probably speaks English w/ an English accent. We both get a good laugh out of that.

Had we packed up and come home after the Cold War, and dissolved NATO and other outdated alliances, America would today be the most courted country on earth.
This dude says this after recalling how one great power of the 16th century couldn't contend with a ruler who had the resources of just about all of Europe at his disposal. What a jerk-off!
Also he before he begins to make comparisons between rulers past and present he needs to bone up on his own history. Charles V was for the most part a failure. He never could totally defeat the French, couldn't hold together the religious unity of the his 'empire' and was famous for totally inept and inefficient government. He became so fed up and worn out he retired from his offices and died a broken man in Spain.

Well you have to admit that it is pretty ironic that a person who is criticizing ppl for speaking English correctly, doesn't write it correctly in the their critique. All that aside, it is a very touchy subject for most ppl and I understand ppl's impatience with seeming intolerance, because like it or not ppl we came from were all in the exact same situation when they came here. As much as ppl who cannot speak English are berated, there is probably an equal amount of praise you can give em, too. I mean it has to be embarassing trying to hold down a job while not being able to speak the lanuguage in the country you are in. Dealing with ppl that come in with snide remarks and attitudes can't be too easy either.
is all this north korea stuff a bluff or would he really fire off a nuke over to the west coast?.
does not the usa have a missile defense system that was recently reactivated?
with all of our technology it seems that we would be able to have some sort of security in effect to counter such threats.
I think the main problem with N. Korea is their ability to cause massive destabilization of the Pacific. I doubt that the Feds are overly concerned with their ability to do us any severe harm. I think the main concern is the harm N.Korea can most certainly do to our allies in the region, namely Japan and S. Korea. With the weapons they have already they can cause considerable harm to the S. Korean capital of Seoul without any nukes. If nukes were to come into play, the N Koreans would defintely use them to attack cities in Japan that were serving as possible staging grounds for American operations. This would be a messy situation for sure and could destablize the region for years on end. Thus, the cautious approach to the situation, at least imo.

my ex and i had an interesting conversation this evening on the phone.
we ended up talking about dfing and da'ing and i made some comment about her "turning me into the elders for joining the y" and then i stated something to effect that "she's lucky i never said anything to the elders about her and i and what we did before getting married.
" (basement, alone, dark, - use your imagination).
Does it matter how long ago a serious sin happened? I guess from the strictest interpretation of Tower policy it should not matter. However, there are extentuating circumstances that have been covered by JT and others here in the thread. However, I remember reading somewhere that officially if a long-serving Elder did something and enough time passed then the sin could be forgotten and forgiven and the Elder could continue to serve without any restrictions whatsover. What this seems to be saying to me is that an Elder could committ an offense, hide it and even it were ever found out be totally exempt from any punishment. I wish I had a link. That little revelation was jaw-dropping!.
