i use a cell all the time.
some states want to outlaw the use of these phones while driving....got an opinion on that?
?
Cell phones really do impair your abilities while driving. I've been guilty of doing it a few times and I;ve found that often they take away that split second you need to avoid a collision. I know because I've had to dodge a few people who turned out to be on their cellies. I can imagine how many people have had to avoid me when I used mine.

chicago - bill cosby (news) went off on another tirade against the black community thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere.
and its not just "POOR UNEDUCATED BLACK FOLKS" I live around a ton of highly educated black folks, Howard , Speelman, Moorehouse, etc- yet the behavoir of their kids you would think they came from a broken home with no dad and mom on welfare working 3 parttime jobs-it goes FAR beyond classses of black folks it goes to the core values black folks are teaching their kids in terms of acceptable behavoir and decorum-
JT,
What you say here could apply equally to children all over America. It's not a racial problem, it's a societal problem. Which is one of the things that makes Cosby's criticism so unfair.

once again you like so many folks are continuing to get "Hung" up on the messager and not the message- you sound like a JW who rejects the message since it comes from an "Apostate"you too are doing the same thing,
It's all about the way the messge is presented. More than anybody like myself or yourself or any of the other people commenting in this thread, Cosby words are meant for those they apply to. I don't see myslef as getting hung on the who said whatever. I just happen to be one of those people who believe that when you are seeking to get people to make life changing decisions, then it does indeed matter how you present the infomation to them. Most of the people here who were JW's would hardly have been motivated to change their lives if someone had castigated the WTS using the harsh, disrepectful, tone and language this man used the other day. The reason being most people, no matter their station in life, appreciate it more if you approach them with a certain level of respect and dignity. Basically Bill Cosby's words WILL HAVE NO EFFECT on the people's lives he is supposedly trying to effect. I guess that will give most of the people yet one more charge to level against them, "See, then didn't even listen to Bill Cosby."
I don't have time at this moment to sift through the thread and find comments I made earlier. However, one the charges I'm seeing bandied about here is blaming white people for our problems. I'm not sure if I've been guilty of doing the same. My unsurety comes from the fact that so many people, including yourself, are bringing it up so often. I think the gist of my posts here (unless I was trying to refute what I believed to an erroneous point of view) , when it comes to Cosby's comments at least, are aimed at trying to raise the bar of discussion concerning socioeconomic realities and the ever-present race issue. That has little to do with blaming anybody for anythig solely based on what color they happen to be.

Flash,
disagree bigboi. If it were a white person saying these things I would have to consider the possibility that were the case, but Bill is a black man passionately concerned for his fellow black people. I agree with him, attitudes have to change, awareness has to increase and education has to be stressed...Or else things are going to stay the SAME!
When I said "for the most part I didn't get anyone's and attention " and the things that have happened here are just a "re-hashing of old stereotypes and prejudices" I was talking about THIS thread, not Cosby's comments. The fact that I said his comments promoted those types of repsonses should have been indicative of that.
You know youself better than I bigboi, from what I've read from your posts on this thread though, I don't see it.What have I said here that seeks to absolve people of personal responsibilty for the things they do?
enjoy .
1. being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host.
then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.. .
It'd take 350 employees making corvin's wife's salary to equal what that CEO made in one year.

Could this be true? Poor , uneducated white people , living in poverty? and no alarm over that? No spokesperson for them? No grants, no AA to help?
Write these guys a letter, I'm sure they'd be willing to help.

Well bigboi, you certainly got everyones attention! Thank you for adding life to my thread. You and I are at opposite ends of the issue though. I'm big on personal responcibility and effort, not waiting for others to do it for me or for making excuses why my lack of achievement is the fault of others. I would often tell my children, "If you want a living standard like we have, do what I've done. If you want more than you have to be more than I am (a truck driver with a 9th grade education) be more than I am." I stressed education a lot!
I don't think I got anyone's attention here. Neither did Cosby for that matter. This is just a re-hashing of old stereotypes and prejudices. Which is what speeches like Cosby's tend to promote. However, the part of one off my posts you quoted were not my words. Philosphically, your opinions are not much different than my own.

I don't know where you get your information from, but this statement just isn't true.I wasn't talking about specifically AFDC. I think I the source I got this info from included all forms of assisstance and aid the can be termed welfare. However, if talking solely about ADFC/TANF benefits, then that would be a correct figure. Sorry for any misunderstandings.

i don't own cell phone, have never bought a jersey, and i couldn't tell you if my car had rims or not..
thats another problem we have..we'll all overcome when we stop wearing jersies , buying cell phones and saving up for rims?
thats also pretty silly.
you're spouting more symptoms..materialism and the pre -occupation with fashion trends is an issue, yes, but it's a minor one compared to the BIG picture, EDUCATION..
once the big picture is seen to, the minor things tend to fade away as well..
chastizing black people because they want to be "trendy" is just more off tangent bullshit that the upper class spew that makes those in the hood pretty much tune them out..
it's like a parent telling a child "CUT YOUR HAIR, you look like a hippie.."

you're right it has been said before, by our own people mostly, but obviously just saying the shit isn't gonna change the shit, we've acknowledged the issue long ago, we need solutions, not reminders that there's a problem, i'm reminded everytime i drive into the hood.

it doesn't figure..i guess i just can't break it down to such a simple exchange , cause to me, this is too broad an issue to compare to a "practice safe sex!!" or "with great power comes great responsibility" speech from an elder..i know what he's trying to do, but he doesn't know us as well as he thinks, and in effect his efforts are essentially wasted..
the ire between the havenots and the well to do will only deepen.
