all germans were mesmerized by hitler? who says so? do you think all people were mesmerized by hussein or stalin? there is very little you can do in a dictatorship without risking your own life. and although it would be nice if all people were heros only a very few actually are (on all sides!).
Guess you haven't seen the films of Hitlers big pep rallies, attended to but literally thousands of adoring Germans, bringing their children/babies, eyes glowing, at the impressive goosestepping of the Nazi regime. Hard to fathom that if so many Germans opposed him, they'd be showing up in droves, eyes gleaming at his words and extravaganza-like display of military power.
And no, not furthering the racisms against Austrians: just pointing out the obvious disconecting logic of someone who so ardently believes in the ferocious "instigation" of Israeli attacks upon the "innocent" Palestinians. Just pointing out the fact that you, yourself, seem to be a victim of your own national bias.
if a more radical person would have won during the great depression (which was not as bad in the US as it was in germany also due to the war and embargo) than of course the same thing could have happened. and it can still happen everywhere on this planet under the "right" circumstances. Oh, so now blaming the "GREAT DEPRESSION" for the Germanic/Austrian genocide of Jews. Funny how mass genocide didn't occur in the US.
also i NEVER compared the riots to the holocaust! once again you were unable to understand what i actually said (probably my mistake!). the riots just show that there are tentions in the US between the racial groups that could easily be exploitet by unscrupulous politicians if the economical situation would deteriorate. Racial tensions? sure years ago. Fortunately they didn't result in mass genocide. Beyond that, our greatest US Leaders, from Lincoln, were very astute in discerning the immorality and inhumanity of slavery and raciscm. Fortunately, we didn't have to have a holocaust 60 years ago to point this out.
as you all know, i'm a supporter of bush...and the war against terror, and the war in iraq.
here's my issues with the bush administration thus far.. prescription drug benefit: quite simply....we can't afford it.
public health care: not that bush supports this (yet) for all you proponents of public health care...let me give you an example of how this will work.
For God's sake...he served his country and got banged up for it...he did it well enough to earn several citations. And if that's STILL not good enough, those voices will NEVER be satisfied.
Actually, it's KERRY himself who's attempting to get the most mileage from his Nam experience. He exploits it every chance he gets; he tries to counter people who question his VOTING record and actual opposition to the Vietnam war by the really mature "You weren't there man!" In other words, they didn't serve like he did, so that must count for LOTS. And they have no right to question his voting record on national security.
People ARE concerned during these times about how the commander in chief will protect US citizens. Just because Kerry served in Nam and later was anti-war and threw his and others' medals (or ribbons...) away, has NO bearing on his ability to lead a nation through a conflict such as we are experiencing.
Personally, I think the whole "who served longer/better" than whom else is ridiculous. Kerry's just trying to leverage his Nam "heroism" for votes, and people are seeing through it.

Well, maybe you're just a victim of the Realist vs. Everyone else reality.
To me, it's starting to all coalesce: The anti-Semitism/Anti-Americanism/pro Palestinan: basically, the Austrian "Realist" needs to explain himself. Not sure how you got caught in the middle...

it is hard to understand why president bush chose to come out in support of sharon right at this moment, when things in iraq are at their most difficult and sensitive.
people are saying he has only inflamed the situation even more than before and has further endangered the troops.
He is almost as much an extreme Christian religionist as Osama is an extreme Islamic. You have to at least admit that both think 'God is on my side and we will destroy these heathens'. This is a disease no matter what your religion. This war is nothing but a war of one set of extreme religionist against another set of extreme religionist. If you are not aware of this you need to review Bush's recent history. Nice fantasy that you are living in, but RECALL: Osama bin Laden delcared war on the US as enemies of Allah. The US did NOT go out and declare war on terrorists. Secondly, bin Laden and his regime has aboslutely NO TOLERANCE for religious dissention. Under the Taliban rule, it was ILLEGAL to believe in any other religion. Bush, on the other hand, has made it CLEAR that we are a society of religious toleration and support. He has NOT tried to outlaw or thwart other religions; all his actions are in fact contrary to that. It is Osama and the Islamofascists who have declared war and their hatred of the US. We are defending ourselves as a free nation that will not toleration such radicalims and hatred.

There seems to be an undercurrent of absolute black and white thinking going on in this thread now. I see people passionatly defending the jews (very noble) turning around and saying Austrians are somewhat guilty for Hitler's sadism..and that racism, classism, and religious intolerance do not exist in America.
Sounds like you think my taking issue with Unreal's attempts to downplay German/Austrian nationlism and genocide of the Jews to be pretty much on the same plane as my suggesting that their national BIAS is coming into play.
Again, you are comparing two VERY different things. Kindly don't take my quotes about Austrian/German nationalism as similar to mass genocide.

bush told woodward that as he approached the final decision to go to war, "i was praying for strength to do the lord's will ... i'm surely not going to justify war based on god.
Then we can talk about his stance of claming to be a decorated war veteran (which he is and which we applaud him for doing that) and then vilifying the very war he brags that he served so valiantly fighting for.
Oh, but he had a good reason to vilify the war: he actually committed "war atrocities" which he admitted to. But yet he should be honored for his service. And he's attempting to dishonor others who did not serve.
Right. Gettin' chills up and down my spine just thinking of his patriotism!!!
