I pioneered for a number of years in both a relatively wealthy, suburban congregation and in a poor, rural congregation. I don't remember ever getting anything in the way of handouts from other members of the congregation. I was flat broke the majority of the time. It was such a relief to finally get a real, full-time job after college and leaving the borg, and not have to worry so much about money.

Trying to get people to "support" pioneers!
by LongHairGal inthis was one topic that used to make me furious!
here the bible makes it perfectly clear that back then they supported their own ministry by working.
there is also the scripture about "counting the cost" implying that one should not undertake any project without making an assessment as to whether or not they could do it.

Any "Miraculous" experience happen to you like the ones said at Conventions
by soundbox_guy ini had to sit through those experiences at the convention, i was wondering, did any of you used to be one of those people on stage giving an experience about how something miraculously happened like getting the exact amount of money you needed to pay your rent on the day it was due?
i always hear the stories, but can anybody actually tell me something like this has happened to them when they were a good little witness?
and if it has, did these sort of "events" stop taking place after you left?

ButterflyCharmer and Kittyeatzjdubs - I heard that car story when I was young, too. It was almost exactly like the one you related, Kitty.
Here is a true story: When I was pioneering one month I didn't have enough $ to pay my electric bill (what a surprise) and I was filing some misc. papers and bills away and I came across a check for almost the exact amount that I needed that was a refund from apparent overpayment of my car insurance, like six months earlier. I felt sure that it was a miracle from Jehovah. When I was growing up we had this sister in our hall who would pray for a sign from Jehovah about EVERYTHING. One time, we were having a garage sale and we had a couch for sale and she kind of wanted it. She said that if we hadn't sold it by the end of the day it would be a sign from Jehovah that she was meant to buy it. Well, lo and behold by the end of the day, we hadn't sold it. I think my mom ended up giving it to her for free.
My aunt is a very religious non-dub and she seems to be always having "miraculous" events occur to her. She is always telling them to my mom (her sister, devout jdub), which makes my mom squirm.

Are young JWs staying in or moving out of the borg?
by zagor inreally, just wondering if new generation of dubs is mostly faithful or tempted to try it all out.
are they faithful to the mother borg or are they starting to question it all.
i mean 10 to 20 years ago it took ages to come across some undesirable info about the borg, but now it is everywhere.

I was actually discouraged when I received a picture and letter recently from a sister in a former congregation of mine. The picture showed all the smiling young people in the congregation after the memorial. All of the kids that were in the 5-15 age range when I lived there about 10 years ago are still in the org. (and they were all in the picture, so I don't think she's making it up), and according to the letter, most of them have become either auxiliary pioneers, regular pioneers, ministerial servants, or bethelites. Even the ones I thought would be out for sure because their parents weren't too strong are apparently doing great. It was pretty discouraging, but this is a small congregation in a very rural area, so maybe it is an anomoly.

cell phones and field service
by lucky ini left the borg before the advent of cell phones (or at least before they were so common), but i was just curious about how they've impacted field service.
when i was a pioneer, it seems like we wasted a lot of time driving or walking around looking for other field service groups in the territory or trying to figure out where other groups went for break (or as blondie mentioned in a previous post, not being able to find a group in the territory after you'd done a rv or an errand on your own was a great excuse for skipping door-knocking).
now that cell phones are so commonplace, it seems like these lovely excuses for time wasting are no longer valid.

by chrissy in...and considering i don't have any, it is surprising that i found the nerve to post my photo as my avatar!
i was leery to use my photo thinking someone i knew could catch on to my new apostate antics.
so, i couldn't decide what to use.

Welcome, Chrissy. I was a GIS major, too. I've been doing it for about 8 years now and I love it.

Lost our Kitty...
by jeanniebeanz inyou remember about a month ago i had asked you all for ideas on how to deliver johnny cats medication for hyper-thyroid issues (which worked beautifully, thank you!)..
well, it finally happened... we took johnny cat in to the vet because he was having seizures.
it scared the crap out of us when it happened.. when we got there, the vet told us he had lymphoma and it would only get worse rapidly.

Jeannie,
Our kitty was doing about what yours is, too - just sleeping a lot and not doing his usual cute stuff. We actually had three episodes of this scenario because we've always had two cats. About two and a half years ago, one of our cats died unexpectedly of a brain tumor. Our other cat was about a year and a half old at the time and he'd never been alone (we adopted him as a kitten). He was very depressed for about a month, it seems, and we finally broke down and got him a kitten, even though we didn't feel quite ready for another cat. He perked up immediately and after about an hour of "getting to know you" time, the two of them were playing and sleeping together. Unfortunately, the kitten that we adopted had a rare virus called fip, which of course we didn't know when we adopted him, and we had to put him to sleep about six months later. The older cat again went through depression and we adopted another kitten about 6 weeks later, and again, he was very happy with his new little buddy (he was a very smart and obviously very sociable kitty). About a month after we adopted the second kitten, the first cat tragically drowned in our pond (about this time we were feeling quite cursed and I cried absolutely inconsolably for about a week). The kitten (who was at the time about 4 months old) seemed ok, though, after a few days of wondering where his buddy was - he wasn't depressed for an extended period like our other cat. We ended up adopting another kitten a few months later. The two we have now are happy, healthy, and best buddies, so hopefully they'll live long, happy lives (and they are inside only after the pond episode). So, hopefully Dumb-Dumb will perk up and be back to his usual self in a few days. I'm glad your husband is paying so much attention to him. My husband is cat-crazy, too, which I find very endearing.

I'm so sorry! We lost three cats over an 18-month period, so I know how devastating it can be. Make sure to keep an eye on Dumb-Dumb, too, and give him lots of attention. After one of our cats died, our other cat got very depressed. My thoughts are with you.

What did you want to be when you grew up?
by whyamihere inas a child, what did you want to be, when you became an adult?
if you could, would you want to go back in time, and become what you wanted to be in the first place?.
as a child, i wanted to be a florist.

In kindergarten, I really wanted to be an acrobat.
In junior high, I wanted to be a graphic artist.
In high school, I wanted to be an architect.
But of course, college wasn't an option, and I ended up pioneering instead.
I did finally go to college, though, and now I make maps, which I love. -
