"Jehovah our Rock, our strength, and our might..."
by Fleur inin among the bags and boxes of keepsakes that my mother gave to me from my grandmother's belongings, something of an emotional nuclear bomb was hiding on me.
or more like a landmine; because i didn't realize the damage it could do until it was too late to do anything about it.
mom had given me first choice of most of grandma's things, knowing how close we were, and i had wanted the box of ancient k-mart brand cassette tapes, now 30 years old, which had recordings of her voice, and mine, when i was tiny.

The system of privileges in WTS - any thoughts on how it works?
by Pole inwts has quite a few traits which are typical of totalitarian systems.
many of them have been demonstrated on this board (labeling, shunning, monopoly on truth, propaganda, indoctrination, polarization of reality etc.)..
there is one more aspect of the wts religion which can also be observed in most totalitarian systems and that is the system of granting privileges.

I keep wondering when the WOMEN are going to stand up and say they've had enough.
The women of this country (USA) have fought long and hard for equal rights... and yet, it seems like the JW women are happy and content to sit by and listen to all the windbags dictate life.
Even if I believed their crap, as a woman I would take issue with how a single woman can't be onstage, that it has to be 2 sisters together doing some demonstration, or some 5 minute bit. But a single man can be up there.... WHY WHY WHY ??? These rules make no sense. Maybe the carrot isn't as attractive to women, I am not sure. Maybe we don't crave power and attention like the men do... I really don't know. But the inequality in "priveledges" and "power" is so evident.
There is such a hierachy, it's nuts.
And remember too, the priveledge of giving a prayer at the meeting? They will coach some young brother until he is ready to finally pray for everyone. I'm sorry but praying is just talking to God, and everyone can talk.

Astronomy vs. Astrology
by Swan ini have always had a fascination with the universe and the night sky.
my grandfather bought a telescope on a lark, but soon he and my cousin grew bored with it and it was just taking up space.
so it was passed on to me.

I remember my mom catching me reading my horoscope in the newspaper and she freaked out... that was such a no-no. Even reading the local newspaper could cause what????
I'm not so sure what they are so afraid of. I mean seriously they live in fear. And astrology BTW fascinates me... I don't put much credence into it, but it's fascinating. (it's really more about psychology than the stars - and we all know that psychology is really demonic too)

I hope I don't offend or hurt anyone's feelings with this post... but here goes.
In my opinion and observations, most JW's are encouraged to learn a trade, be a carpenter, a painter, lay tile, lay carpet, etc. In fact most JW's I know are tradesmen. Being in that type of career field doesn't lend itself to much recognition or commendations. I mean you can get really good at laying carpet, but you still lay carpet.
In the corporate world or professional career world, people are encouraged to excel and then their talents and hard work are recognized, they get promotions, they get raises, they are asked to handle big accounts, or they can put in for a different job. There is usually some carrott being held out as bait to get employees motivated to work harder for the company. A lot of people get fulfillment from their job, either it's a challenge, or maybe they get a 4-6 year degree and do some specialized work that makes them feel good about themselves.
Back to the JW's.... being trades-people there isn't a lot of recognition or advancement on the job. So the need for recognition is there, and the JW's take advantage of that. They praise people and give them special titles and sort of promotions.... it's a carrott. But the whole time they can't realize that it's nothing, it's an empty title. So what if you are a MS or an elder? or even the PO? What difference does that make?
If they spent as much time on acquiring a "title" in school, they could probably earn a real title such as M.D. or whatever.
But my theory is that people need something fulfilling in their life, career, religion, relationship, etc... and some people have such empty lives that the "title" and "power" in the religion does it for them.

I remember that theory, that maybe we'd move to other planets and be fruitly and multiply the whole universe.
Gawd, and we think that wacko jacko is nuts.

Everything on this planet dies. Energy from the sun sustains us during our life, but everything goes through a cycle, water rains, runs into rivers, soaks dirt, ends up getting evaporated and starts it's cycle once again.
Our life cycle is that we are born, we live, and we eventually get old and die. What is so bad about that concept? I actually can accept the REALITY much easier than the fantasy. It seems perfectly natural to me to accept that one day I will die. It's the cycle of life.
If there is something on the other side, I'm not counting on it. I live the best life I can, and live life to the fullest and hope to grow old after living a very fulfilled long life and after making lots of memories.
ALSO: The JW's interpret that God's original plan was messed up by Satan and then rebellious Adam and Eve, if the plan was sooo perfect, it wouldn't have failed. I think it's the human explanation of what humans believe. Maybe God's plan is exactly what we have, freedom, free will, free choice, and God allows us to enjoy the sun as energy to keep the life cycle going, but complete freedom with everything else.

jw meetings and obedience to the society
by boy@crossroads inin what ways does each of the jw meetings play a part in instilling obedience to the mother organization?
or maybe put another way, how does each weekly jw meeting contribute to the overall jw mindset?.
this thought came to me whilst drifting in and out of the watchtower study this morning.. ministry school: helps jws strengthen their speaking skills for better defending their beliefs.

Did you ever notice also, that the JW's preach how to resist "peer pressure" but they are the worst at putting peer, and elder pressure on everyone? They push and push and push, very subltly at times to get their way. It's appaling.

hahahaa... About the resurrected people, they will all be coming up out of their graves and walking around. Yeah, that sounds more like a nightmare than paradise to me.
What about the faithful person who loses their mate and the mate dies, and they remarry... he/she gets resurrected but they can't ever be together ??? That doesn't make sense either.

You can't describe real LOVE you can only decribe what it isn't.
by frankiespeakin in.
is that true?
-
JustTickledPink
Well, the love between people, maybe a man, woman, friends, etc... is ALL WE HAVE. That is the only form of love we can actually fully know and understand, the rest is speculation and personal philosophy of what might be. We can only describe love in terms of what we know, just like there may be more dimensions to the universe, but we only know our own.
