Happy Anny. Glad you're here, I've enjoyed reading your posts. It's really wonderful to finally find people that recognized the same inconsistencies and problems and decided to leave.

very interesting. I am waiting for the day that they offer the magazines as pdf files and leave all the printing to the individual witnesses. They buy the paper and ink themselves. What a novel idea!

Say Something Jehovah's Witnessy........
by minimus ini know there's no such word as "witnessy" but this can be a fun thread.

How about in the "questions young people ask" they always had illustrations of younger bethalites sitting around with one guy playing the guitar. Used to "encourage" younger people to enjoy fellowship and listen to musical instruments.
I used to think, who on earth sits around and listens to one guy play guitar and call that fun?
The illustrations were soooo hilarious.

Being raised to believe that everything you do is sinful and
being raised to be feel ashamed of your body, your body's normal wants/needs/desires
being raised to always carry around guilt
being raised to be in constant fear of Jehovah's "wrath" and punishment
being raised to be waiting on death and destruction, and your own if you happen to fall short and sin
Is any of that damaging? I'd say so. Any religion that is fear-based, that constantly preaches death and makes you carry around a world of guilt... how could it not damage your formative years?

But has anyone sucessfully made any headway talking to a dyed in the wool JW and made any progress? I'm at the point that I don't want her preaching to me, so I am sure she doesn't want me preaching to her. She's 61 years old, she's been a witness for 30 years and she is truly one of the whole-hearted believers. Absolutely believes everything, never misses a meeting, and has pioneered on and off for years as her circumstances and health permits. This is everything to her, her entire reason for living.
I just wonder has anyone ever sucessfully talked sense into a family member like this?

What have you done to counteract the 'cult of Jehovah's witnesses?'
by AK - Jeff ini know that many here would place jehovah's witnesses on a list of 'cults'.
personally i don't think they meet all the standard definition - but would class them as an 'authoritarian sectarian movement'.
at any rate, most of us would not want our neighbors to get caught up in the mind-twisting that we endured and from which we finally removed ourselves.. that said - have any engaged in successfull enterprises to counter the movement?

We have 1 KH in the town I live in, BUT there are tons of other churches and they are filled on Sundays. So I think the more mainstream churches that are offering social and community based programs to their church-goers and holiday programs and such are attracting people.
Personally, the only thing I do is talk about it when I get to know someone or I hear mention of them.

Reverse Shunning
by redskymedic ini'm thinking of telling my mother i can't talk to her anymore sine i don't agree with how she is conducting her life.
occasionally, i'll meet up with her and my jw aunt (they work together) with both kids in the car.
my aunt will come over to check out my baby but completely pretend that i'm not even there.

I 100% agree and support your decision. I already made that decision if I ever have kids. I told my mother since she refuses to speak to me, attend our wedding, be part of my family, that it's her choice, that she's either IN or OUT of her relationship with me. If and when we have children, I told her that she has already made the choice to NOT be a part of my family and she will have no contact with them.
My sister battles letting her see the kids, they live 3,000 miles away but once in a while visit and all she does is read to them out of the "Bible story" book and pray for their salvation. That isn't what going to Grandmas is supposed to be like.
I am of the opinion that talking about Armeggedon and death and destruction is harmful, no way I'd subject my kids to that nonsense.

YOU are the parent, you are responsible for your son, this really pisses me off. They want to come and pick him up? No way.

Marine Chooses Wedding Ring Over Finger :(

I think he must have held on to that ring though during the war and felt like it saved his life or something, or the belief of love saved his life. He was on Good Morning America and he said there was a lot of bombing and they never knew if they were going to be killed.
I think the ring must have been his good luck charm or something, but in his heightened state of emotions I can see where this is possible. He is suffering from a lot of stress from the war and wanted to keep something in his life intact.
Although I think it was stupid.

I was thinking about the growth in the smaller and 3rd world countries.. and thinking how it related to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs
1. Physiological Needs 2. Safety Needs 3. Love Needs 4. Esteem Needs 5. Self-Actualization
I think a lot of the 3rd world countries contain people that are still most concerned with where their next meal will come from, a roof over their heads, and also their safety. A lot of these countries are plagued with disease. Now I am not discounting the need for God just thinking about how dedicated are these people to Jehovah and the JW cause, how much preaching work is really being done? It seems like having a religion, although important, would be not as important as their basic needs. So, I am really curious about those figures, how many are really die hard JW's??? I remember hearing how 3rd world countries were easy converts for Christian movements because they also fed them, so where they there for the food or for Christianity. I am just thinking, maybe they have a few bible studies and just go ahead and baptize these people... who really would know what is happening there, no one would ever verify those stats.
