Men suck until you're in your late 20's. Then they start to mature and get a bit better. That is my personal belief. When they are 18 you are still competing with who much rubber they can leave on the pavement if they spin out.

Follow the money......
by mjl inhas anyone ever tried to follow the money the wtbs collect?
it's almost as bad as watching a shell game in new york city.
here is one of my biggest problems... the building fund.
-
JustTickledPink
I think this has been discussed before that the money loaned is NOT charged interest anymore. It was when the building fund started, but I guess they "changed" that rule a few years ago.
I remember our hall though being charged low interest. The thing is, with 5% interest rates this year, it would be more feasible for a local congregation just to REFINANCE at a lower interest rate. CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT????

My JW parents and JW ex-wife
by Cygnus insince my episode, which is chronicled elsewhere on this board, my jw parents are driving up from florida to stay a week with me.
my ex-wife, who *i* divorced mainly because she was jw, came to see me tonight without my calling, just to check up on me and make sure i was okay.. some jws aren't that bad, friends.
remember that when you think of blindly look to condemn them all.

I don't think I have ever thought for one minute that the JW people as a whole were bad or evil. I have picture albums of my best friends growing up, I have pictures of my friends who I went to Europe with, diving in Cozumel with, one girl I ran into recently and she is now an elder's wife and I hugged her said hello and she nodded and said hi back to me even though I'm DF'd because we have such a long history together. I had fun with them. The thing I have an issue with is the doctrines and the religion, not the people, although with the people there would be no religion. I guess it's kinda like the baby and the bathwater thing.
But I do know that for sure... but remember that there are many loving worldlings out here too. I'm now one of them and have some of the best friends in the world that I care dearly for.

She Went To Sleep And Woke Up 30 Years Later
by dh injust came accross this interesting story, it's old news but still thought it was an interesting read.... .
she went to sleep and woke up 30 years later .
the real-life story of annie shapiro - who fell into a coma at age 50 in 1963 - is more remarkable than the movie based on her miraculous re-awakening.

Great new book
by Jankyn ini just finished reading leaving the saints: how i lost the mormons and found my faith by martha beck.
beck is a regular columnist for o magazine (oprah's mag).
the book details how she survived sexual abuse in her home (at the hands of her father, a big-shot mormon scholar), and how she eventually left the mormon church.

I love Martha Beck, I know someone that took her workshop and spent some time with her face to face and she relates a lot of her life to being an ex-mormon and overcoming it all.
I hope to read it, don't know when, but I'll get to it.

Is Your Lifestyle So Much Different Since You Left The Organization?
by minimus indo you see a difference in the way you live now that your out of the "truth"?
more materialistic?
more "worldly"?
-
JustTickledPink
Materialistic? I don't know, coming from the pioneering mother who raised me a trashy trailer to remain humble and stay focused on the "spritual goals", not sure if us buying a new home and buying new furniture and enjoying our lifestyle would be considered materialistic, I think it actually might just be NORMAL.
Working a 9-5 job instead of scraping by cleaning houses, hanging wallpaper, part time jobs, etc.
More stability, more normalicy, definitely more happiness.

hypocrisy
by rebel8 inwell my beef for the day is this.
my mother, who claims to be a faithful dub, attends weddings and funerals in other churches, but she sits down when we are supposed to stand (ie, when a prayer is being said, when the bride is walking down the aisle, etc.).
she is proud of herself for "making a stand".

My mom is wholly opposed to the Salvation Army, will shop at Goodwill and garage sales but not the Salvation Army.
My question is, if you garage sale and your money goes to a pagan, or a baptist, or a catholic, then what? It's a stupid rule.
Same as researching what companies make donations to pro-life vs pro-choice causes, which companies donate to the Red Cross and then deciding whether or not you are going to buy their product.
Give me a break.

The actual turning point -- where you regain your own power
by JustTickledPink ini have done a lot of thinking about what it's like to actually believe the wts has "the truth" and what it felt like to be immersed in the religion and i finally figured out the exact turning point a person has to get to, that allows a person to let go of it all.. it doesn't matter what scandals you read about, what sort of a victim you were to the society, it doesn't even matter if you quit attending meetings years ago.
there comes a day when you finally realize inside your heart and throughout your mind that it's just a religion.
not "the truth," not "inspired by jehovah god," but in fact just a religion.. i started thinking about it in terms of a profession.

Barney, How does freedom of thought, choice, religion make us powerless?
If you are following the leader, he is in control, has the power. If you decide to make a decision for yourself instead of following the leader, you have taken control of your life and hold your own power for yourself. It's back to the idea that you are responsible for every action you take in life.
