Was there ever any doubt?
Why do you think they were so intent on financing the ongoing insugency against the coalition forces in Iraq? If the U.S. secures Iraq, then that puts U.S. troops on two of Irans borders! That, friend, was the last thing they wanted! Of all the nations in the middle east, Iran is the one that is due the most payback as far as the U.S. is concerned. All the rest of it was just getting there.

Plus, most martial arts (including karate) aren`t very realistic. If someone starts messing with you, it usually starts with pushing and shoving, it doesn`t go straight to punching, blocking, etc. Someone once said karate works well on another guy that knows karate, but not on a regular, drunk idiot...The exception is jiu-jitsu! It`s really realistic, with lots of holds and grappling techniques, as well as punch, kick, block etc. If I ever was to start with martial arts again, I`d go for jiu-jitsu.
I agree in principle Hellrider, but don't count those TKD folks entirely out. I have a friend, a DF'd Dub, who holds a brown belt in TKD. One night, he was confronted by a man with a metal pipe who tried to beat him up with it. The assailant ended up with a broken arm for all his trouble.
TKD was developed for combat in the begining. But as its adherents marketed it as a sport, they did have to tone it down somewhat. I agree that the grappling arts, such as Jiu Jitsu, Taijitsu, Dante, Aikijitsu, and Aikido, are better oriented for those common modes of attack. However, they don't enjoy the sheer availability for instruction that the Karate and TKD do. In my area, the nearest Aikido group is about 80 miles away. The same with Judo. The nearest Taijitsu class I know of is about 300 miles away. And I don't know where the nearest Jiu jitsu class is.
The nearest TKD class is right around the corner from me, with several schools in my town. One of those instructors also claims to be certified to teach Hapkido and Tai Chi as well, but his focus is clearly on TKD so I don't know how good he would be for the other two arts.

1 direct hit, bit 4 bullets. Recieved third highest award. The questions I had trouble with assumed that the "Scientific acceptance" is the ultimate measure of truth.

Congrats CRR! I did martial arts when I was younger (before the Borg) and they didn't hand out belts in my system. Some jerk from another Ryu started teaching folks in the US and messed that up! Anyway, I figured if I take the martial arts back up, I'll probably go for smomething a little less vicious, like Aikido.

Does the Watchtower Society Monitor this Board???
by integ inmaybe this has been addressed before, but after reading certain comments about people being "outed", i wonder if the wts really monitors this site?
if so, to what extent?
or is it just individual elders etc.?.

I've never been able to get the quote function to work for me by clicking. So I finally decided to just look at the code itself using the "page source" function in the pull down "view" menu on my Netscape browser and use it. That is partly why I decided to just go ahead and start learning HTML coding.

What is a right?
by Narkissos ini've been looking at the "health care" thread here and there and, although i did not reply (it's one of the issues where most americans and europeans seem to be really really far apart) i felt like asking a distinct yet related question which probably best suits another thread.. so, what is a "right"?.
are "human rights" written somewhere, in heaven or in nature, other than in human laws / customs which are the provisional, ever-changing result of power struggle and negotiation, in an equally ever-changing economical-social conjuncture?.
and then what is the point of discussing "rights," if they are not grounded anywhere else than in the socio-political arena itself?

Spelling could've been better. But maybe I'll get there on the coding.

Well, here is a try at html as well as a reply.
NarkissosMy only point is there is no absolute, objective or transcendent truth in such matters. Individually and collectively, we only have the "rights" that we affirm and struggle for.
That is very true from the materialist point of view Narkissos. If there is no creator, then there are no absolutes other than the forces of the natural world. Thus, "rights" are just social constructs, subject to the whims of whoever holds the power to enforce or deny them. The founding fathers recognized that truth. That is why they grounded their recognition of certain rights within a theistic/Christian framework. Without him, their reall isn't any such thing as "rights" outside of what ever a society chooses to abide by.
