My brother is an RN.
He just finished his ASN last year and is already getting paid well above what you get paid. Added to that, the hospital he works for is paying off his student loans. They are also adjusting his work schedule so that he can pursue his BSN while working. It don't get much better than that! But, guess what? The shortage for nurses at all levels is projected to get even worse. So the pay and benefits is just going to keep on going up.
One of the reasons for that is that colleges and universities are not willing to pay Nursing Instructors what the market makes them worth. So the number of Nurses who are willing to teach is going down.
Those programs are somewhat hard to get into and competetive. But it is something to think about. I'd do it myself. But a health problem I have is in the way.

Fred Franz as Ghostwriter for Rutherford
by slimboyfat init has been claimed that franz was a ghostwriter for rutherford in formulating many on the more obscure allegorical interpretations, and "classes" doctrines of the 1930s and 1940s.
i wonder just how much evidence there is for this.
if there any contemporary testimony that franz did a lot of the writing for rutherford?

A. H. Macmillan was a figure in the organization from Russell's day and priviy to much of went on at the top since he was instrumental in helping Rutherford to take over and run the organization after Russell's death. Late in life, he wrote the book Faith on the March, which appears to be a refuttal of Thirty Years A Watchtower Slave. In it we find the following in chapter 13:
"A scholar from his youth, Franz is a keen student of the Bible. Born in Covington, Kentucky, in 1893, he carried away the honors of the University of Cincinnati and was offered the privilege of going to Oxford or Cambridge in England under the Rhodes Plan. Instead, in 1914, he entered the full-time ministry. His mother was a devout woman and a sincere Bible student and had brought her children up in that way. When Franz came to headquarters in l920, Rutherford saw at once that he was a young man of literary ability and possibilities, so he put him to work as an editorial assistant."
That is very suggestive of Franz doing some ghost writing for Rutherford. Since MacMillan would never admit that anything carrying the byline of Rutherford was not written by him, the statement does raise the possibility. A textual analysis of Rutherford's books and other writings with a comparison of works known to be Franz's would settle the matter. I don't doubt that much of Rutherford's works would be revealed as Franz's. Maybe Natan can give us some specifics or link us to people who have done that work.

it's so nice to read logical, educated voices who have been brave enough to walk away from this organization.
i was raised a jw, and every person that i personally know that has left has ended up miserable.

Greetings and welcome to the forum D&A!
Forgive me for stating the obvious, but your post tells me that you have not formulated a personal belief system to replace the old one. That is understandable for several reasons. One is that you were thrown out of the house at 18 and surviving was probably your top priortity for the last 8 years. Now that your priorities are begining to change, you are starting notice the lack I mentioned. The second reason you've probably not figured out just what to believe now is likely that your time as a child in the WTBTS probably turned you off to the idea of the study that will be required.
And that is what you need to do. It is time to start doing some research of your own into what to believe. That way you will be able to say what YOU believe, rather then what Jehovah's Witnesses believe. Take different teachings on the basics you learned as a child. Research them, read from several different perspectives, and read critically. By reading critically I mean not taking any particular writer's word for it just because they have a long list of titles after their name proclaiming their authority. Make each side PROVE it's case to you. Weigh the evidence for each side before reaching a final conclusion on the question.
It's alot of work, I know, I am in the process of doing that myself. But you have alot of more time than I do since I am in my fifties, so you have the time to do it right. If on some issues you find your former cult to be correct, don't be afraid to believe it. Teaching a bit or two of truth is the best way for a cult to recruit members and grow! The important thing is to do like the guy on CSI and "follow the evidence". That will lead you where you ought to go.
I look forward to seeing you around1

I was close to death and in the hospital. None of the elders could be bothered to come by. My step son, a ministerial servant on the fast track to elder couldn't be bothered to drive 50 miles and be there for his mother and half-brother who were beside themselves with fear that they were going to lose me. It pissed me off enough to live, and I can count on the fingers of one hand the times I attended the meetings after that.
Damn! I managed to type that without punching out my monitor! I must be starting to get over it now, four years later!
There were many things that built up over the years. And two more things which happened within months of that. But that was the last straw for all practical purposes.

The JWs and Jesus as their Lord
by greendawn inhow would the elders react if a jw began using habitually expressions like "jesus christ our lord" or "our church" instead of "our organisation" or "may jesus help you/be with you" expressions that are scriptural and apostolic but which the fds does not really like?

My wife bumped into the PO of our last Congo while she was shopping. He told her that the CO was visiting and they'd like to stop by on a particular evening. My wife conveniently forgot to tell him we'd moved.

Yes - I read it a few years ago and am still a JW. My wife did and is still a (devout) JW. Franz writes well , but without knowing the other side of the accounts he discusses , it is impossible to establish a term of reference on his book alone. Some ex-witnesses are not big Franz fans - he doesn't support the Silentlambs program , claiming that child abuse isn't a problem in the WTS. Nevertheless , both his books are fascinating background reading , if a little dated now (he has been out of the loop for many years).
I lived not all that far from where he was living when he was Df'd. I heard all the apostasy and trying to start his own cult rumors that flew around at the time. But I also knew a few folks and found out why his local Congregation Df'd him long before I read it on the net.
As for his decision not to ally himself with any particular group within the ex-JW community, I think that was a wise decision on his part. Just about any group would've loved to have him on board, and I don't doubt many have tried to get him. But when I remember all the rumors I heard about him trying to start his own cult, I can see why he doesn't want to do anything that could possibly give any credence to them. The only positive recourse he really had was to write those books. I respect his resisting the temptation to do otherwise!

Interesting conversation.
I read French reasonably well but don't write it well enough yet to reply in it.
