Claire,
i am dating someone who recently left the jw religion.
i am not a jw, nor do i align myself with any specific religious organization.. intellectually, it was very difficult for me to accept that he could be absorbed into what i believe is one of the strongest cults of our society, but in time i realized just how easy it was to be absolved in something that you are forced into out of fear.. he's at a point right now where he is reading/researching various literature and discussing his experiences openly *such as boards as these* and i encourage such discussions.
he does not see himself ever returning to the religion and is even willing to face that he may be shunned from his own family as a result.. here is where i am "stuck".
I have never been a JW and am not only dating an ex-JW (Gadget/Paul), but am engaged to and marrying him in May of next year. At first I was terrified to meet his parents because of things he had told me about the JWs and because of what I had read on this board.
However his parents have never shown me anything but care and respect (his dad even telling me that he looks on me as a daughter - which is quite nice really cos my own dad doesn't show me that much concern). His parents would do anything for us (within reason I guess ) and likewise Paul and I are the same with his parents. Religion per se is never discussed but there has been the odd reference to meetings, talks etc, but not enough to make me uncomfortable or concerned. I do find that I watch what I say a little and I tend not to mention birthdays or Christmas, and when his mum came with me, my mum and sis for my dress fitting, my nerves were on edge every time my sister uttered "oh God", "for Christ's sake" and "oh bloody hell" lol.
Although I don't post often, being a member of this board is really helpful, as for non-JW's, it really gives us an insight into what the life of our partners has been like (or may still be like) and gives us a better understanding of how they tick.
I agree with LT that it will be difficult but I also agree with Cordelia that you shouldn't write him off because you are worried about how his parents will react to you. You might be surprised, but if not, that doesn't matter - you are going out with your partner, not his parents.
Good luck and best wishes
Faolan/Claire x

Aer Lingus Flight 101 was flying from Heathrow to Dublin one night, with Paddy the Pilot, and Seamus the co-pilot. As they approached Dublin airport, they looked out the front window.
"B'jeesus" said Paddy "Will ye look at how fookin short dat runway is".
"You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Seamus.
"Dis is gonna be one a' de trickiest landings you're ever gonna see" said Paddy.
"You're not fookin kiddin, Paddy" replied Seamus.
"Right Seamus. When I give de signal, you put de engines in reverse" said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Seamus.
"And den ye put de flaps down straight away" said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Seamus.
"And den ye stamp on dem brakes as hard as ye can" said Paddy.
"Right, I'll be doing dat" replied Seamus.
"And den ye pray to de Mother Mary with all a' yur soul" said Paddy.
"I be doing dat already" replied Seamus.
So they approached the runway with Paddy and Seamus full of nerves and sweaty palms. As soon as the wheels hit the ground, Seamus put the engines in reverse, put the flaps down, stamped on the brakes and prayed to Mother Mary with all of his soul. Amidst roaring engines, squealing of tires and lots of smoke, the plane screeched to a halt centimeters from the end of the runway, much to the
relief of Paddy and Seamus and everyone on board. As they sat in the cockpit regaining their
composure, Paddy looked out the front window and said to Seamus "Dat has gotta be de shortest fookin runway I have EVER seen in me whole life".
Seamus looked out the side window and replied "Yeah Paddy, but look how fookin wide it is.
one of my dreams is to one day making to cairo egypt and see the great pyramids.
i want to see a lot of things in that area, as well as other parts of israel, and the middle east region.
i have been into history, for as long as i can remember.
It's a difficult one. I understand the reasoning for going in relation to "not letting the terrorists win". On the other hand, if you don't feel safe, then it spoils the trip. I visited Qatar not long after the first Gulf War, as my dad and his wife were working and living over there. For all the conflict seemed to have died down, I did feel a little edgy, and a visit to the very north of the penninsula brought about a very real reminder of what happened - remember the oil terminals that were set alight? The coastline of Qatar was still covered in the oil slicks and the devastation was horrible. Also, (although not a Middle Eastern country) I visited Zimbabwe in 1991 and I loved that place so much. The people were so friendly, beautiful and proud of their country. I vowed to visit again, but at the moment, there is no way I would take the risk.
I think it's all down to how comfortable you would feel making a trip to such an area. As for waiting for for things to settle down a bit, you could be waiting a very long time, so if you feel so strongly about it, maybe you should grasp the nettle and make the trip?
sometimes you really are in the right place at the right time.. i went for a roll along the bike paths.
i crossed the ottawa river and followed the bike path.
one of the things i missed the most about moving to manitoba was the changing of the leaves.
Hi LadyLee
It's Claire here, remember I visited with Paul (Gadget) in May. What a beautiful photo and I can just picture where you were at the time. I love herons - we saw a few in Scotland last week - they are so graceful. It's brilliant you got such a good photo of it, I can never manage to get a photo before they move.
We have some lovely photos from the day we visited and went on that walk over the bridge - will have to get them to you.
Hope you are keeping well and that we get to meet again some time.
Take care
Claire, xx
(PS: We are getting married in May next year!)
i recently came across this one, and it resonated with me:.

well my dear and trusted friends on this most esteemed forum...i would like you to meet my newest addition..."freedom frog".
he now graces my right arm and has been adopted into my family of frog tattoos.
(gizmo, on my left front leg above my ankle and flipper, another little frog above my right ankle, but to the side).
Right, if Paul's getting his out, I am too . I'm hoping to go for my third soon, as soon as one jumps out at me and says "tattoo me", lol.

this seems like a normal thing to celebrate, if you are into celebrations.
here in the north, the days become longer than the nights.
more light.
Me and Gadget celebrated the equinox on the 20th with some very special friends. It's a fantastic time of year not just in that the days are getting longer - you can actually feel the sap rising and the whole earth coming to life with new buds and shoots, bumble bees and butterflies floating past and the animals preparing for their coming young. It's a great time to start planting seeds if you haven't already done so - I got into the garden at 8.30 this morning and starting potting up some seedlings and clearing the yard, it was lovely, so peaceful with the birds singing and me up to my elbows in soil, lol. Anyway, better stop here because I could keep going on this subject for ever !
Gentle breezes
