i know, i know, the jws love to boast about ``honoring jehovah'' and having ``restored the divine name to its rightful place.
'' but my question is: is such casual off-hand use of the divine name really respectful?
i mean, the vast majority of us well know the names of our parents; but just how respectful would it be to go around referring to them as ``harry'' and ``alice?".
Matty I was hardly referring to you, I can enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy...I laughed at yours, it was funny.
Im talking about the trash-like way some posters come up with twisted pronuniciations and spellings of "Jehovah" as if his name were a joke or something. That's disrespectful.

I persist in my feeling that overuse of it is a detraction, especially in casual daily conversation.
Yes, especially in casual daily conversation on message boards where the obvious intent is to be as disrespectful to God as is possible by creating one's own own bastardized supposedly humorous version of it.
I guess totally agree with each other. I'll look out for similar sentiments from you when these 'detractions' pop up on other threads. You won't have long to wait, I guarantee it.

I think we do well to remember that the JWs hardly have the market cornered on calling God "Jehovah". There are many other translations of the bible that refer to this pronounciation or Yahweh as being God's personal name, in fact over 6000 times in the Old Testament according to the Catholic Encyclopedia. I once observed on another board completely unrelated to JWs that someone asked what God's name was, and some nonJW scholarly type came up with an impressive list of all the variations, here is a partial list:
Elohim - Plurality in Unity
El - The Strong One
Elah - An Oak
Eloah - The Adorable One
El Elyon - God Most High
El Roi - The Lord That Seeth
El-Elohe-Israel - God of Israel - Genesis 33:20
El Olam - God of Eternity
El Shaddai - The Almighty, All Sufficient God
Adon-Adonai - Jehovah Our Ruler
Jah - The Independent One
Jehovah - The Eternal, Ever-loving One
Jehovah-Elohim - The Majestic Omnipotent God
Jehovah-Hoseenu - The Lord Our Maker
Jehovah-Jireh - The Lord Will Provide - Genesis 22:14
Jehovah-Rophi - The Lord, The Physician
Jevovah-Nissi - The Lord our Banner
Jehovah M'Keddesh - The Lord Doth Sanctify
Jehovah-Eloheenu - Lord our God
Jehovah-Eloheka - Lord Thy God
Jehovah-Elohay - The Lord My God
Jehovah-Shalom - The Lord Our Peace
Jehovah-Tseboath - The Lord of Hosts
Jehovah-Rohi - The Lord My Shepherd
Jehovah-Tsidkenu - The Lord Our Righteousness
Jehovah-Makkeh - The Lord Shall Smite Thee
Jehovah-Gmolah - The God of Recompenses
Jehovah-Shammah - The Lord is There
Jehovah-Whose name is Jealous - Exodus 34:14
I think it stands to reason that IF there IS a God, one of the ways to say His name is likely Jehovah, and in light of that, unless you've become an out and out atheist, you should be careful about blaspheming his name like some posters on this board like to do with their supposedly humourous pronunications which usually in some way deride the JWs somehow.
I wont repeat examples here, because I do find them offensive and blasphemous.
i follow the threads on legal questions with interest because somewhere inside me is this voice yelling at me to get back at those bastards that lied to me and my family and all the other good people i have come to know here and abroad.
i too carry a lot of anger with me from my experience as a witness.
however, another poster raised the question "what is your ultimate goal?
Sean Im glad you didnt take too much offense at what I was trying to help with, sometimes I come across a tad brash, but I mean well.
Incidentally alot of what I've suggested on 'leaving it all behind' etc etc in this and other threads is just what I've learned through countless sessions with my therapist. As the other poster suggested, I would strongly urge this course for you too, it'll help sort YOU out, and that's the most important thing.

As the person who last asked the question, 'what is your ultimate goal?', I have no problem defending the question in the context that it was asked. Although I do find it disconcerting that you chose to ignore the question there and start a new somewhat unrelated thread with my question as the basis.
We were discussing taking the WTS to court to have a decision that was made as a child to be baptized to be annulled or in some other way declared legally null and void. Some posters may feel that maybe they'd be able to regain a relationship with loved ones if they could legally prove that they were not fit as a child to make what is a very adult decision.
And in that context my point still stands. No piece of paper from a court is going to change the mind of your mother, wife, father, husband or anyone who is brainwashed to believe that religion takes precedence over love for your family.
If you can't appeal to your wife on the grounds of love for the person that each of you married, not the religious faith, then she isn't worth it and if you don't get out you will be needing more than a bi-weekly appt with a therapist. You may have other interests tied up in it (such as financial which you highlighted) but they are lame reasons to stay with someone. Work on re-establishing your self-esteem and do not harp on what you might lose, because if you gain only your mental and emotional well-being by doing what's right for you then you will have gained much more than you've lost.
EDIT: just wanted to address one quote of yours tho:
I would like to see them exposed as no different than any other religion or cult that presumes to speak for God.
I have seen this puzzling sentiment repeated by many on this board. Really, the outside world does see this about JWs and has known it for a long time. As for the ones inside, what really can you do? There are 100 times as many Muslims that blindly believe the same thing about their religion too. Its the illogical premise that every single last religion on the planet is built on, and no amount of protestations or well formed arguments from former members of any of these fundamentalist types will really change much.

washington (june 17) - the constitution protects the right of missionaries, politicians and others to knock on doors without first getting permission from local authorities, the supreme court ruled monday.. the court struck down a local law that leaders of a small ohio town said was meant to protect elderly residents from being bothered at home - a law challenged by the jehovah's witnesses, whose religion calls for doorstep proselytizing.. with two weeks left in the court term, the justices still have more than a dozen high-profile cases to decide, including legal disputes involving the death penalty and government vouchers for church schools.. in other cases decided monday, the justices:.
- ruled that police who want to look for drugs or evidence of other crimes do not have to first inform public transportation passengers of their legal rights.
the court rejected arguments that passengers, confined to small spaces, might feel coerced.. - decided that the internal revenue service can use estimates of cash tips received by restaurant staff to make sure it is collecting enough social security taxes from their employers.. - rejected arguments that texas redistricting hurt hispanics.
Very true d8ta, you have every right in most areas to ask peeps to leave and if they wont, in some cases even remove them forcibly.
Now if I could just get those f****ng natural gas resellers to stop sending illiterate fools to my door every 3 days trying to convince me to give them my gas bill so they can deceptively sign me up for some scam that'll supposedly save me money....but I guess those idiots dont have a 'do not call' system in place...
i heard of a funeral held for a sister last week in a kh.. her non-jw daughter-in-law write a poem for her, and wanted to read it at the service in the kingdom hall.
the d-i-l had studied many years ago but was never baptized.
however, because she was wearing slacks, she was refused to read it from the platform and had to read it from her seat in the audience.. how low can you go?
JW funerals are weird. Ive had so many good and bad experiences. Although I disagree that all services are canned speeches that are identical. I know personally that my step-father was always sought out to give memorial services for both JW and non-JWs on my mothers side as he had a decidely meek and compassionate manner about him and would not use funerals as an opportunity to preach. On two occasions when we buried JWs on my mom's side they specifically asked for him on their death beds, and were very specific in what they wanted said, in terms of their hope in the resurrection. I guess he was just respecting their wishes.
Here are two that happened to me recently, on my father's side of the family:
My grandfather, who was never a JW, died, leaving behind my grandmother, a devoted JW all her life pretty much (and one with a heart of gold, god bless her), and a mix of JWs, xJW and never-JW children. My father wanted to say a few words at the funeral, which was going to be held in a KH. My uncle, the firstborn of the family and an elder, was coordinating everything and said that my father was not going to be allowed to speak from the platform at the KH. Rightfully so, most of the family thought this insane as Grandpa had never been a JW (just sympathetic, you know, the assemby/memorial attending type). So two days before the funeral the venue was moved to a local funeral home. The elder who was giving the talk still came and delivered a moving speech, very neutral in terms of any form of doctrinal stuff, and also attended the viewings, very warmly greeting me and my father, who was very vocally anti-JW for many years (well until he became RC and calmed down alot). My father was able to give his eulogy and then after the funeral there was a wake at my Grandma's house that the JWs in her congregation catered all the food and everything for. We all went and notably my father and uncle had a very long chat and apparently resolved some major life-long grudges they had harbored against each other, some JW-related, some not.
The deaths didnt stop there though, as a couple of months later the same uncle who was adamant that my father could not speak at the KH suffered a stroke and died the next day. I dont know exactly what had happened between him and my father the day that we buried my Grandpa but I was pretty amazed to see not only my uncle's funeral held at a KH, with the same clan of JWs, xJWs and never-JWs present, but also to see my once 'apostate' father get up and deliver a eulogy to his brother. Oh, and one other notable memory was my great-uncle, a Catholic priest, sitting in the second row in full RC garb, very disrespectfully scowling and pretending to be asleep with his chin in his chest during the entire service.

i know i asked this absolutely yonks back, then by the name of celtic, but with so many newcomers here i thought no harm but to ask once again.. how many artists do we have here or working in art related fields including film, music, theatre, environment, gardening, sculpture, graphic design, illustration, fine art, photograpy etc etc?.
what hobbies do you have?
how do you see your future artistic horizons opening up?
Ha, everybody wants to be the lead singer...
That's what Im up to as well, really honing the singing aspect while teaching myself guitar for the songwriting...we have a lead and bass guitarist, still searching for a drummer...we had one but he rarely showed up for practice and then flew off the handle when we tried to gently let him know that we needed him to show up regularly...oh well, these moody musicians! LOL
