According to bookstudy, it's ok to beat wife.....occassionally

i apologize if this has been mentioned, but i don't have the time to come on here as often.

yesterday's bookstudy on divorce got my shorts in a bit of a knot.

apparently, according to the god's love book, a wife could consider legal separation from her husband if she is physically abused, but (get this) only in the case of extreme physical abuse, and if the wife's life is in danger.

Where in the world do they get that the Bible say that it's ok to hit your wife?!?! That goes against everything the Bible teaches about showing love and respect to each other! That's ridiculous.

The only thing that really even had me considering this was that the simple lifestyle of Bible worship and the traditional role of wmen in the family was very appealing.

Like Jamie said, the JWs don't really do those things. They merely pretend that they do. I know it's easy for people to fall into their trap because on the outside they appear to be deeply devout, Christian people. That's why it's so important to investigate a group before joining it. Thankfully, you are doing that now so you and your daughter will be spared a lot of future heartache.

There are quite a few Christian churches out there that do place an importance on Bible teachings and traditional family. You just have to do your research and look for them in your area. Just make sure that whatever church you choose is teaching the Bible and that they're not another cult. Best wishes & God bless.

Why in the world would you consider marrying someone who already won't give you any straight answers??? Marriage only compounds existing problems. Not only would you be hurting yourself but you'd also be hurting any future children you may have. How do you think those kids will feel when they see their parents fighting over meeting attendance or whether to celebrate Christmas or not? What if he insists on taking your children to the Kingdom Hall? He may be lapsed now but if he still believes he WILL go back. Get out now while you still can and don't date any more JWs.

Welcome. I think you already know the answer to that. You say that you know they are a cult. Would you expect the member of any cult to give you a straight answer? And why would you want answers from a cult member anyway?

I think (and forgive if I'm wrong) what you're trying to do is justify this relationship in your mind. Lapsed or not, he still believes in the JW teachings. And lapsed or not, you still believe in your Christian upbringing. Since you know the JWs are cult, you should know that they are not Christian. Dating someone with a completely different belief system will inevitably lead to disaster. That's why the bible says at 2 Cor 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

I hate to sound like I'm lecturing you or anything but you sound like a nice girl and I really want to spare you future heartache. This board is full of stories of people whose marriage or relationship with a JW as ended tragically. It breaks my heart every time I read one of those posts. You might want to spend some time reading the board and see if you really want to continue a relationship with someone who shares those beliefs.

Why the abuse in religious organizations?

i have often wondered why the many issues of child abuse and pedohilia in religious organizations.. a friend of mine mentioned that they are not alone of course, many cases in other sectod too, but it seems to be out of whack in religious organizations.. i think that it may be a two fold issue:.

1) many people have these horrific tendacies and know it, many try to find solice or a solution for them in religion ( self control and such), they fail because rather than dealing with the problem they try to "control" it, in other words they try to contain it and dominate it instead of fixing it.. some may believe they are cured, only to fall "from grace" as it were.. 2) some are sub-consciously or perhaps even consciously attracted to "professions" that will alllow them to exercise those tendancies.. religious organizations tend to not be the best palce for people with these issues, there is a tendancy to "ignore" the problem raher than fix it, a tendancy to not seek professional help because it is a sign of lack of faith.. pedophiles need to be helped, for the sake of all, they need to be treated even sequestered from the possibility of commiting these horrific acts.. for their own good as well as for the sakes of children.. thoughts?.

PS, no religious org can cure anyone of anything. If someone believes that, they are simply misguided. Christians do believe that anyone who is born-again can make radical changes in their life, with God's help. But that's God doing that, not the church. On any given Sunday, you can sit in a church full of people who used to be all sorts of things but have changed for the better. However, no reputable church would allow a former pedophile to take part in the children's ministry. That would be like sending a former alcoholic into a bar. It's just plain foolish and that's something that parents have a responsibility to check out before they allow their children to join those programs.

I've been attending church fairly regularly for about the post 2 or 3 years. I think the vast majority of people I encounter there are honest, good hearted people with good intentions. My church is very strict about who they allow to work with the kids. You can encounter bad people anywhere so it's good to be cautious but it's a bit unfair to assume that churches are overflowing with perverts. (Not saying that you think that) With the exception of the Kingdom Halls, people joining churches for nefarious means are probably a very, very small percentage. Kingdom Halls on the other hand seem to be a pedophile paradise.

i have come to believe that we are an amazing bunch of people - we made our way despite all the odds and fought for individuality - and won.. even today i was told that going back to the hall would solve my problems (by a jw family member) and i honestly can say that i felt amusement.

Oh no, now everyone's getting in trouble. Mouthy, Big Tex replied that "out of pocket" meant away. abroad, etc. Then he said something he probably shouldn't of. Minimus told him to stop and Tex must deleted the post. Now there's a big miscommunication resulting in everyone being sent to their rooms...

just got a pm from blessedchild that joined 5 hours ago wanting me to send money to africa to feed them since their mother disowned them because they do not go to the kingdom hall.

a teacher let them use a computer to ask google for help and they found me.

I wouldn't call Walt (the Dad) neglectful. He may have been emotionally distant but his children were fed, clothed and educated. Instead of being grateful for those things, the children chose to see only the bad that he did. Walt did make attempts to rebuild a relationship with his son. All his son did was dodge his phone calls and then tried to put the Dad in a retirement home in a bid to steal his house. Walt failed as a parent but his son also failed with his unforgiveness and selfishness. Just because someone hurts you doesn't mean that you have to do the same to them.

My mother is shunning me now. If at some point she comes to her senses and tries to contact me and I ignore her calls, do I have the right to complain if she decides to donate everything to the WTBTS? I don't think so. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I think the movie shows that those who remain unforgiving only end up hurting themselves.
