Witness's refusal of transfusion costs his life

sunday, january 14, 2007. a young jehovah's witness's decision to refuse a blood transfusion - which eventually led to his death - has split his family along religious lines.. jean-claude lavoie, 26, died in late december after refusing a transfusion while being treated for an intestinal tumour, the tqs television network reported friday.. lavoie's brother, who is a former jehovah's witness, has since launched an internet petition calling on the federal government to make it illegal for a person to refuse treatment on religious grounds.. "the jehovah's witnesses refuse blood transfusions for religious reasons," jonathan lavoie writes on the petition's website.. "this creates enormous stress for the family.".

I am with you bluesbrother. I accept blood for myself, but I would not want any treatment forced upon me. And even though I think the blood ban is crazy, I would not force my mom to accept one...and I would not want anyone else to force it upon her either..which is ironic because she says she would try her best to prevent me from ever receiving a blood transfusion

I never knew of anyone dying at the DC, but I recall a case in Fort Worth where a little girl (about 4 yrs old) went missing. Her parent lost site of her at the beginning of lunch intermission and she was not found until after the end of the days program. It turned out she was just with some family friends from a neighboring congregation, but it could have been much worse. Again, no announcement was made as the PA system was for convention news only. Also, the parents, who were quite worried, were basically told "well you should have kept a better eye on her"

NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE SEXTUPLETS.....WRITE THE CANADA MEDIA
by skeeter1 incanada's first sextuplets were born to jehovah's witness parents.
they were born at 25 weeks (not 40 weeks as is common with full-term).
due to their prematurity, they will most likely need blood transfusions.

It was a seperate case that fortunately had better results. The girl lived and is now cancer free. Some other newspapers carried the full story. But, of course, the WTS is only going to mention it's one seeming success, rather than all it's failures...

Disciplining babies?
by bernadette ini'd appreciate advice.. i remember when i was pregnant the following exp was given at a district convention.
an elder said that he started discipling his child from 9 months.
he said whenever the 9 month old made a noise or cried at the meeting he would squeeze her.

unfortunately, in the congregations I was in, it was quite common to spank babies. Some restricted it to a mild swat, others went further. I recall one witness woman who carried a wooden spatula with her to spank her children. A lot of others in the cong were appalled and eventually another sister stole the spatula and broke it in half. BUT no one ever reported her for child abuse. Even as a child, however, I knew that's what it was.
Another instance I recall involved a toddler. The parents constantly smacked him, either open open slaps on the face or cracking the top of his head with their study books. Once, at a bookstudy in a private home, the mother took him into the kitchen and spanked him very roughly. The study conductor actually asked one of the sisters, in front of everyone, to go into the kitchen and tell the mother that "that is enough." But, again, no one ever reported her.
I say report them anonymously and let the state sort it out. A lot of attention has, thankfully, been put on the tolerance of sex abuse in the organization. It is time that physical abuse receive attention too.

Skeeter, while I admire what you are doing, what qualifies you to say 'without blood, I think they all will die'? Are you a doctor?
The articles show that their doctors, the ones most familiar with the case, are optimistic. Also the reports show that the BC child welfare dept is already prepared to step in if need be. And, while the WTS seems to be using this as an opportunity for grandstanding, the parents are being quite honorable. Imagine, for instance, if the parents were to do news conferences and use this an opportunity to propagate their beliefs..we all know witness families who would have done this.

Former elder sentenced for driving drunk and vehicular homicide
by drwtsn32 ini started a thread on this a few months back when it was first in the news.
well the former elder had his trial yesterday, plead guilty, and was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison.. link to story.
this article doesn't specifically mention the fact that he used to be an elder, but it was brought to light in prior news articles.

4 1/2 years for killing a young woman...how sad. I realize he is no longer an elder, but he was disciplined by the congregation at all? I know a few people who never killed anyone while they were drunk, yet they were disfellowshipped as drunkards (at least one sister was terribly depressed and was not allowed to see a therapist, thus she drank..she could not attend AA..she could not get any help..only punishment..it was one of the cases that made me never want to be a witness again.)
I also wonder how many of the character witnesses were witnesses?
Also, understandably, this woman's family will never want to talk to witnesses again..does this mean they are automatically doomed to destruction at armageddon? Yet, because this man carries the moniker "Jehovahs Witness" he'll get eternal life? uggh..I get so fed up sometimes
