Hej Rebel8
Blondie asked if spanking and such was in the SWEDISH books and magazines. And no it is not. I am not sure why it isn't but my guess is the swedish government makes it very clear about this issue. I NEVER knew such things were allowed, let alone approved, by the WBTS until I lived in the US.
I know in the US church and state are let to be seperate(or at least say it is), not so in Sweden. A law is a law be it biblical or not. Spank/beat your children, and do the jail time.
My parents have many bound volumns of Watchtower and Awake, plus every other book published in their library since the 60's, no mention of physical discipline being allowed/approved. They are in swedish...but I could translate....

Yes, it is true the publications never approve spanking/violence towards children.
While studying in university in the US I attended meetings at the local kingdom hall. I was shocked the first time I watched a small one being beaten on the way outside the hall during the middle of a meeting. I jumped up and ran to the child's aid. The elders had a meeting with me on how wrong I was to interrupt this 'parental discipline', Jehovah expects children to be disciplined. I agreed that children need discipline, but no person should be degraded by physical violence. I asked what a child could do to receive this sort of treatment. The child wanted to go to the bathroom, when not allowed, he wet his pants.
Yeah, what a loving organization. The beginning of my exit....

Wow! I am so thankful I was raised in Sweden! It is against the law to spank/beat/strike your child. Also illegal to berate or emotionally abuse children. This is closely monitered by schools, and other parents. If even a rumor of physical/emotional abuse, even just spanking, swedish social services took over. If found to be practicing, mandatory 3 months in jail. 3 months for every time reported.
None of my friends or myself ever had our parents even threaten physical violence. Very civilized society. I can only remember one family who did and the father was sent to jail.

I feel for you madmax! Seems to be the way things are ran today....
I too had been gone for almost 9 years and suddenly got a visit from the Elders to let me know I was to be disfellowshipped! Whatever! I had left that life so long ago. Only thing that changed is now the JW family members now shun me! The friends I make now are true friends, not other brainwashed cult members. Free at last!

What JW Things Did You Have A Hard Time To Let Go?
by minimus ini had a hard time accepting that jehovah's witnesses are a cult.
i would even agree that they might be "cult like" but i didn't want to accept that i indeed was part of a cult.....what about you?

I had a really hard time letting go of my mother and brother, my friends, even the routine. I knew Sunday was meeting then service, Saturday service and Tuesdays and Thursdays gone too. Having all that time on my hands was a little daunting. Later came the guilt, once I had my son. I worried since I had left the organization this would give him a death sentence. Took me 7 years to realize I did the very best thing I could possibly do for him. NOT raise him as a JW. Raise him with love and acceptance.

mom the other kids at the hall treat me like i'm not good enough
by candidlynuts inyup..thats what my teenage daughter told me this week.. she's beautiful, witty, smart, funny and overall a wonderful person (if i do say so myself).
but she's feeling unworthy of love from the " friends".. so i had a long long long long talk with her about the other " witness" kids.. how i felt the same way as a kid, how as i got older i found out the other kids didnt want me around because they were doing things that they .
didnt want to be told on about.

Wow, you are the kind of mother I needed when I was a teenager dealing with the pressure of being an outcast at school and at the KH. And the kind of mother I hope to be to my 10 month old daughter, too!

Hey Cat,
I have been racking my brain to figure out who you are writting about. I went to the Raytown cong (which shared the same Kingdom Hall with Red Bridge) from 1980--1994. I left the "truth" in 1995, but my father still is semi-active. I will contact him and try picking his brain to see if he maybe remembers who this might be and if he knows something more helpful.
I hope you find the answers you are looking for. Don't be too hard on yourself. You were doing what you truly believed to be right at the time. Having done the same thing myself when I was younger, then experiencing it (shunning) myself first hand, I am sure she forgave you years ago.
