  so the greatest show on earth rolls around again.

  traditional catholics must be exulted to be a part of the death of one pope and the selection of another.

  many of them would not have thrilled to such a glorious occasion.. a spectacular location, a cast of millions (most of whom are alive), lavish costumes and props, and plenty of superstitious ceremonies and customs.

  Dubs believe rituals are wrong just because they are rituals; rituals are wrong in themselves; there is something demonic about rituals.

  I believe rituals are a harmless human tradition. As long as they are not hurting anybody, I see nothing wrong with them. If they meet their emotional/social/psychological needs by doing a ceremony of some kind, good for them.

  The RC church, being as old as it is, developed a lot of symbols and rituals for an additional reason: communication. There was no CNN. There were no microphones, hearing aids, or eyeglasses. There was widespread illiteracy. A symbol, such as a robe or smoke, is visible from afar and communicates quickly to people who otherwise could not hear or see a speaker from a distance.

  Cheeseman, that was awesome. I got a laugh out of it. I do remember people saying stuff like that to me when I was a dub, and while saying the rehearsed responses, I did privately think the other people were right. Hopefully you got through to them.

  I used to think SpongeBob was a big piece of cheese. My little cousin still laughs about me thinking he was cheese!

  What state did this guy perpetrate in? I was thinking he could be located by www.anywho.com or the state may provide a searchable database of incarceration records. You could also google his name and see if anything comes up.

  Interesting!

  I've always found the church's history interesting from an historical perspective (only). Really, if ya think about it, any type of human organization that's large enough or has been around long enough has scandals, secrets, all sorts of juicy stuff...not just religions.

  When I was a dub, I always wondered why they were so afraid and critical of the RCs. After I left, I learned how many lies I had been told about the RCs. The dubs are on a total hate campaign against the RCs for some reason.

  Is it just me, or does this contradict itself? A Pope can retire, but no one will accept his resignation?

  The Holy Father may retire if he chooses. The Code of Canon Law states, "If it should happen that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that he makes the resignation freely and that it be duly manifested, but not that it be accepted by anyone" (Canon 332, No. 2). Nevertheless, when a pope is elected as the Successor of St. Peter, the Church expects that he will remain in office until his death.

  i know he was raised as a witness and he wrote the apology letter(which was published in the watchtower) as well as giving the wts a boatload of money($$$millions$$$) over the fallout of his thriller album.

  recently he proclaimed his faith in jehovah as if he is still a jw and his father who kicked the crap out of his kids(requisite to raising a fine jw family) as well as his mother are attending court.

  what is this guys status??

The Awake quote was in the context of an article entitled "Young people ask, What about Music Videos?" Jacksons words are from another quote, not attributed to any source though . His is the only video named out of several examples that are just described]

  Right, and the quote posted earlier doesn't even actually apologize. It almost says he's sorry, but not quite; saying you regret a decision you made does not =acknowledging responsibility and apologizing for it. (ie, I could say I regret buying my car, but that doesn't mean I accept blame and am remorseful. Far from it.) I seriously suspect the WTS put him up to that, with the requisite threats of DF or public reproof.

  I believe MJ to be a sociopath, incapable of producing a genuine apology for anything. He skirts around any accusations while putting on a shallow, insincere show of remorse, just like the sociopathic child molesters clients I used to have when I was a social worker. The attempts at fooling people into believing he is remorseful are artfully intertwined with rationalization and excuses. Everything about the interviews I've seen of MJ indicates this.

  The Pope is NOT the voice of God on Earth

  i have always been a little bit puzzled by jws loudly proclaiming that the pope is not the "voice of god on earth", and turning around and vernerating the watchtower as "the voice of god on earth.".

  i have repeatedly told jws to apply the same standard you do against the pope to the watchtower and you will be more than a bit dissapointed.

  the best answer i could ever get was, "well that's different".. can any exjws explain this?

  The impression I get is that the catholic people consider the pope to be a God.

  The official belief is that the Pope is Jesus' representative on Earth. The belief is that, while he is Pope, he is infallible in matters of faith, doctrine, and morals. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Rhodes/3543/infalib.htm Catholics are free to believe or not believe that doctrine without being expelled or otherwise sanctioned by the church.

  I don't mean to advocate for the Catholic church; I don't consider myself Catholic. I was Catholic at one time though, and I do think it's important to recognize the distinctions between fact and dub anti-Catholic propaganda. What was a major shock to me is that most of what the dubs say about the RCs is based upon what was done in medevil times. Vatican II updated many of the doctrines the dubs claim are still in force. For example, RCs no longer believe they are the one and only true religion (see above link).

  Of course there are similarities between the dubs and any organized religion. However, some organized religions are cults, and some are not. While there are similarities between the RCs and the JWs, there are many, many differences. Most RC groups are not cults. For me, that makes all the difference in the world. I have no objection to people belonging to non-cult religions, while I have serious objections to people belonging to cults.

  yesterday, while i was folding and getting ready my papers for my saturday paper route, i was in the jw chatroom on yahoo.

  there were quite a few jws there (which has become an unsual thing - most diehard jw chatters have gone to paltalk where the control over a chatroom is more rigid) and i engaged a couple of these jws.

  i asked my usual stumper "is there any historical proof for the year 607 b.c.e.?

  I wish a current JW would submit a Questions From Readers about this issue and see what happens.

  It is strange for the WTS not to issue a statement about this is in some form. They published the thingee about Thriller in the magazine, for Pete's sake! Now he's (allegedly) a child molester, a cross-dresser, dangled an infant over a balcony, advocates adults to share a bed with unrelated children, and is praying with a Protestant minister, all while claiming to still be a dub....higher crimes than doing a video about monsters, even in dubspeak. Why are they silent on this issue?

  I'm going to guess and say that he is still affiliated in some way, they're embarassed, so they're keeping silent. If he was DFd or had DAd, they would be proud of "keeping the cong clean" and would be making that public.

  Ascot, I appreciate the link, but I still don't think that proves the church was forcing the Pope to stay in office. I think that quote is saying it is tradition for the Pope not to retire.

  I have attended Catholic Mass many times and had a friendship with a few priests. (I don't consider myself Catholic, but that's beside the point.) This issue has been discussed many times, and it was said many times that the Pope can retire if he wishes. Some Cardinals were said to have been actually encouraging him to retire.

  Bishops are allowed to retire, and the Pope is in charge of them, so I'm sure he could have retired if he wanted to. It's not a prison anyway; if he announced to the world he's retiring, that's it, he leaves. No one is going to kidnap him and make him stay.
