I was supposed to be proud to be a JW, proud to be different, vindicated by other's disapproval. And I felt very little of that, and seldom. We aren't allowed to feel anything other than blessed and special under such circumstances and I wasn't very skilled at denial when I was very young (I got better at it in high school, since I got baptized right before I started.)

Proverbs 16:5 "Everyone that is proud in heart is something detestable to Jehovah. Hand [may join] to hand, [yet] one will not be free from punishment."
Not judging, but something that I forget from time to time.

JW kids and the national anthem humiliation......
by kid-A infor me, school was extremely stressful as a jw kid.
the worst part had to be my morning dose of humiliation being forced to walk out of the room as the national anthem came on the loudspeakers (first god save the queen, then, oh canada).
the other kids found this completely bizarre, and several of my "patriotic" minded teachers really resented me for doing this (despite the obvious fact i had no choice in the matter but was being forced into this by my parents).. how could anybody force this public humiliation on a small child or teen-ager, already having to deal with the normal stresses of growing up and worrying about their public image with their peers???

does it say mighty god or divine being?

In Australia, you don't have to do this "stand for the national anthem" stuff, only on rare occasions, you had to.
But really, why do you have to sing the national anthem? Why won't people respect your beliefs? Why do people always have to draw the worst conclusion? Why can't they consider and be more philosophical (and think to themselves...
"maybe he doesn't like singing..."

What horrible, disrespectful people in this world! I mean, when you were younger you didn't say them all "stop singing, you are a Satanic! Satan's songs!" DID YOU? No.
I am sure if it was some other group of people who don't believe in the national anthem, people would fall over backwards for them. I won't say who. But some people in our community are very uncooperative! I am sure it's like that back in Canada!!!
With all this globalization and so forth, unfortunately, people aren't so nationalistic about their countries... a lot of people are very indifferent about their countries. I am not particularly nationalistic myself, but "when in Rome -- do what the Romans do." About whether I would sing the national anthem... well, I was lucky because in Australia, we didn't do it hardly at all... But again, am I stopping other people from singing the national anthem?
(Pssst, I actually like my country's national anthem: Advance Australia Fair... I just had it when they say "advarns" instead of "advance." :)) -

Since I am very much aware that Dr. BeDuhn's major is NOT NT Greek, nor is he a Greek scholar, nor a translator, and is not really 'in' to the Bible Translators community, I can put this book in its proper perspective. Furthermore, when I noted exactly which particular Biblical verses in this book were being analysed, AND that the 'New World Translation' of Jehovah's Witnesses was used as a version worthy of comparison, I saw exactly which ways the winds were blowing, and behold! Which version does Dr. BeDuhn think is the greatest thing since sliced bread(my words)? The New World Translation! I have since learned that he uses the KIT(Kingdom Interlinear Translation) in his classes as Northern Arizona State University. His opinions are just that: his opinions, which do not coincide with 99.9% of Greek scholars.To even presume that the Jehovah's Witness bible is correct on these issues would be funny if it weren't so tragic. Some of Dr. BeDuhn's criticisms are worthy of consideration, many are not. This is just another book to place on my three-shelves worth of books on English Bible translations: nothing spectacular here whatsoever.

So one needs to know just who is writing the book and understand their perspective. I would listen quicker to a real biblical scholar for the greek language. Anyway this is a publication that JW use to back up how wonderful their bible is.

There's no proof. Just because some Stephen guy makes a comment on if he knows Greek or not doesn't make it true! I knew what he was talking about when he wrote that book and he does make a lot of sense when comparing all the translations! You should check out his credentials on his web site.
I only put the Amazon link, because he doesn't have a proper website! It's only basically a cv.
It's awful when someone starts off a rumor, no wonder he didn't reply! Because he would consider it to be an insult! Maybe Bruce Metzger, the guy on the NRSV board is not really a Greek scholar! After all, his translation is a "compromise translation." and calls Jesus the "I AM," even know in English if you take the Bible context out of it for one moment, it's very poor grammar!
Admittingly, there aren't many scholars willing to support the idea that the NW is a superior translation, just like as I've said of proof the divine name pronunciation is "Jehovah" (thanks to the Siberian/Masorete Jews -- who have kept it down with oral tradition.) Just because there aren't a lot of people disagree with it, doesn't make it wrong. I mean, there's a billion Catholics in the world. Does that proof that their religion is the right one? If I lived 500 years ago, I probably would because that was all there was; apart from Greek Orthodox. But in mainstrem Europe, it was just Catholocism. Why don't people criticize the Joseph Smith translation? There are thousands of verses rearranged, added or taken out! No, I am not talking about the Mormon book, I am takling about him editing the Bible and making a very warped translation! This is what you should be criticizing!
It's funny how someone starts of a rumor and then everybody believes it. I read in this Barnabas Ministries book (about the divine name), once someone starts off a myth, it never dies! That would explain all the false doctrines that have been caried down through the ages. The falsehood has been there for so long, it "may as well" be truth! People sould look at what happened ORIGINALLY, not what their priests, elders, bishops tell them! Thanks Ray for making me more openminded on religion in well. You will die soon, I know. But you will surely be in God's memory.
