Definately agree there, the elders in my old congregation loved the power! The most morose dumbass blokes around, given this perceived power, shit yeah they abused it! And for the Cheshire set here, does anyone remember from the mid 80's early 90's perhaps a Circuit Overseer called Tom something or other? he looked a bit like Benny Hill, but less amusing. He was the most obnoxious arrogant SOB i have ever met, far worse than anyone i have ever met "in the world" He lambasted the congreagtion, called us all spiritually weak the whole week he was there! I remember my dad doing an impression of him and he was hilarious! He was originally from Bath, and all he harped on about was how wonderful the congregation was in Bath, most people in our hall were muttering "well eff-off back there then" under their breaths! He was a prick!

I HAVE THIS THEORY.

SOMEONE ONCE SAID TO ME.....' iTS NO GOOD COMING INTO THE TRUTH IF YOU ARE A SENSITIVE PERSON.'

I HAVE FOUND IN MY EXPERIENCE AS A FORMER ELDER THAT A LOT OF ELDERS HAVE VERY LARGE EGOS. MY THEORY IS THIS:

TO BECOME AN ELDER A PERSON GENERALLY HAS TO BE AMBITIOUS BY NATURE. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE BUT IT IS FOR THE MAJORITY.

ON THE OTHER HAND, IF YOU ARE A PERSON WHO IS NOT OVERLY AMBITIOUS AND YOU DONT REALL Y CARE ABOUT POSITION, YOU ARE UNLIKELY TO EVER BECOME AN ELDER.

THE DIFFICULTY WITH THIS IS, THE GENUINLY NICE PEOPLE ARE NEVER ELDERS WHILST THE AMBITIOUS, PERHAPS NOT SO GENUINLY CARING PEOPLE DO END UP AS ELDERS.

1,3,4 years?

i ran across this speculation recently.

the g.mark depicts the ministry of jesus as 1 year long while g.john has been reckoned to require about 3 years to account for all the festivals in that version of the story.

does luke suggest 4?

I saw a www site that was talking about this a few months ago. I saw the PDF of it, this site basically went out of it's way to say it was a 1-2 ministry.

It mustn't be important, because it's not mentioned in the Bible. That's the way I like to look at things really. I mean, really, even his age is guess work -- "about 30." That could mean 28,29,30, 30 1/3, 31, 32... They are all around 30! 27 and 33 is starting to stretch it... :) So really, his age is not important either -- other wise the Good Book would've told us, right?

Interesting what Jehovah decided Matthew and other gospel writers what to put in their respective gospels...

What I'd really like to know is is HOW he got involved with this religion?

How come someone I like such as Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden singer) can ignore all these crappy religions in the world, do the typical metal thing and tell them to *expletive* while some pop singer (I am not even sure if this is the kind of music he did, he was a bit strange after all) like Prince can weaken his Elohim-given senses and say "I better be a JW and save souls?" Who knocked on his door? I would have thought these people are hard to reach because they have such exclusive and private lives. While someone like me, well I am just Joe Blow. Anyone can knock on my door -- there's not going to be any intercom thing at the gate you have to talk into, before you reach me, is there? And even though they write letters these days (because of apartment blocks being "off limits" to people who don't live there, with someone like him, surely there would be a guy/woman sorting through the mail tossing out all the crappy letters -- along with the JW "be a Witness" letter!

Can't say I was a Prince fan, but I wouldn't say that I disliked him though.
When he was around I was listening to all the heavy metal/alternative stuff -- I still do! :)
Also, just because I am not a fan, doesn't mean I don't feel sorry for him. Because I do. I hope "common sense" prevails over the traditions of men. He should what's good for him.

That's a pretty loaded question! I think this website speaks for itself! lol

Christianity started off as a "cult" according to the opinion in various quarters, but then as time went by, it was proven it was a normal religion... a religion with substance... a relgion with a serious message. A religion that was contributed by many people, not just one person like the JW's, Mormons and other religions which I don't want to mentioned, because of that walking on egg shells ("political correctness.") :( The sound teachings it has, the honest it has in it, and it's improvement on it's savage nature (particularly in the torah) and bringing about a Messiah to "straighten things out," proves it's a normal book. [Mind you, there are many parts in the Hebrew Scriptures like Psalms and Proverbs which are not savage and which are just wisdom books...] But the people who make evil cults, you can tell them by their fruits can't you? When you step outside a church and have a look at what you left, you are glad that Christ is your mediator and not some priest or false prophet.

Some Churches may not be cults, but why does some man or woman tell you as a Christian (if you are one) what you should or shouldn't believe and then around in 80 years time (like with the "this generation" theory [1914]) and tell you "this generation" is an indefinite term?

A lot of us have to work 5 days a week and worry about all the boring necessities of life, it's a bit much we have to worry about if we are putting the smile on a priest or a prophet as well, when they are just imperfect people.

Recognize a cult when you see one, but always keep your thinking cap on when getting involved with religion! Don't just except something hook, line and sinker. Tell your children to tell their children's children to keep an open mind not just on religion but everything in life, of this world full of imperfect people.

posting the first several parts of my life story evoked an emotional response in me that i didn't fully anticipate; thus the angst.

as i've pondered what happened next, (and maybe this is one of the very best things i can derive from sharing my experiences!

early on (age 10 or so), i immersed myself in mathematics, physics, chemistry...the "pure" sciences, devoid of "worldly" meaning...just the plain and simple facts, thank you ma'am.

i'd stay in my room and study stuff until my mom had to literally grab me by the ear and say "craig, go outside and blow off the stink!.

I used to be 100% convinced JW's were the only true religion, because I studied the Watchtower endlessly. It was not until I compared it to what other religions believe that I could see the dishonesty and inaccuracies. It is important that people in other religions are just as sincere about finding truth as JW's, and so have a good scriptural reasons for what they believe.

JW's know Watchtower doctrine very well, unfortunately Watchtower doctrine is quite simple and where it deviates from mainstream Christianity is usually wrong.

A simple look at the history shows why. Russell had no great religious knowledge, yet started a new religion by pasting together the bits he liked from other religions, something he admited to himself. When Russell died Rutherford discarded many of Russells teachings, calling many Satanic and introduced his own. This shows that Holy Spirit did not direct the religion, it was just the ideas of untrained men.

In general JW's are well intentioned, but it can be a dangerous religion. Extreme reliance on rules, the hypocritical stand on blood, and the extremely damaging using of disfellowshipping makes being a JW potentially damaging to a person in the long term.
