No, not really. But then, I grew up in a dirt poor area myself and the elders were just more poor neighbors.

i remember this guy once, after the book study (the one where you go to someone's house to study a book) boasting on this house he wanted to buy!
it made me feel sick!
he was showing off so much!

i noticed after being a jw for a while that many members of my congregation were having to take antedepressants.
(i counted at least 30 out of 100).
after a few years i too began to have bouts of depression and problems with anxiety.
Welcome Rod and GoodGirl.
Every one of the regular pioneers in my old congregation, male and female were on antidepressants or valium at one point in time, or drank themselves silly. I kid you not.
I had the Elders tell me that my ex did not have a drinking problem even though he could bag a case of beer in an evening 4 nights a week, because 'he could go for a day without a drink'. The elders used to get so blitzed at the pizza joint in Ukiah in the 70's and 80's that they had been asked not to bring the group back more than once. LOL
Meanwhile, the 'weak' in the congregation were getting their lives together to focus on their families, careers, and the future. Go figure.
Blondie, I know what you mean about the popular illnesses. Although it irritated the hell out of me when perfectly healthy people would 'hijack' a condition that has made my life complicated at times, I didn't blame them. All they had to do to excuse thier lack of time card hours was to say, 'oh, I'm in a flare', and all was forgiven.

no im not crazy now... but maybe i was back then.
did you ever prayed for guidance and opened your bible in a passage that seem to show you the way?.
did you get a innocent comment from an old sister at the hall that seemed at the time like advice from the almighty?.
I have no idea why he'd want to
Seriously though, there have been times when I felt as though things fell into place in such an extrordinarilly divine way that I am tempted to say that 'He' was saving my backside. Does that make sense? Some of those things seemed to be much more than coincidence.

"it is better to be hated for what you are,
than to be loved for what you are not"
i saw that on a bumper sticker today and just loved it.
if to put my dog (leska) to sleep at the 4th was'nt enough, now my 2 other dogs are going to give me trouble.
i agree, it was my fault too: i should have closed my door with a key, but who would expect those monsters to escape ?
they were in my living (with the door closed) while i was moving boxes with old paper into my car to get rid of.
Sure wish you well with your doggies. I miss mine a lot since coming to an area where we cannot have dog's. I'm sure they bring you a lot of joy in spite of the misadventures!

welcome to the forum and i hope you enjoy all the stuff we have to offer here.
lots of jw stuff and also just things for fun, or even meeting up once in a while.
welcome and it is good you are here!.
Gumby,
Dude! I had no idea as to the sacred nature of your relationship with the ewe. I will, of course, never invoke the gal again in my posts!
By the way, how many emoticon's can you get into a message? Has anyone ever used them all in one post, except for the 'special' sheep that is...

to belong to a culture is part of being human.
yet, jws and evangelicals are told to avoid being contaminated by the secular culture.
the evangelical movement, however, has created a subculture of its own.
People in general need to feel that they are normal as judged by society, and the witnesses are not judged as normal. The WTBTS has isolated their people and starved them for social interaction so badly that if they are collectively feeling stressed on this point it is understandable.
Jean
what was it that was the real eye opener for you?.
for me, it was after watching the video, "jehovah's witnesses; a non-prophet organization," and the point on how the org puts itself in a place between jesus and mankind.
a position which does not exist scripturally.
Thanks, everyone. As a group it looks like it took something different for almost all of us. Some were freed through scriptural inaccuracy being taught by the org, some through experiences with rotten people acting as though they had God's cell phone number while treating others like dirt.
Very interesting, and thank you again for sharing.
