The Pope is just another religious con man, the pointy hat and funny dress symbolic of criminal decadence and moral corruption.
Blondie,
You've really gotten soft lately... I hate it when you sugar coat your opinions. Please say it like it is, next time!

Need Questions
by ufo1 ini used to post here a while back as 2112 and i am posting again.
i have continued to read but have just been too busy to post.. anyhow, over to past few years my jw wife has aced if the elders could "talk" to me.
i have always said no, only because i didn't want to bother.

Although your intentions are honerable, meeting with them would be like arguing where to place the deck tables on the Titanic. I just don't see it working out the way you intend.
Besides that, it makes your family think that the organization still controlls you. I can think of no more important lesson that a man's son can learn from his father than that a man should not allow others to invade his home and tell him what to believe and how to live. Do you want your son to think that it is okay for a man to allow people he has learned to be delusional power grabbers in disguise as a religious order into his own home? If you think they are dangerous, which he has probably already picked up on, eventually, he'll wonder why dad didn't take a stronger stand.
One person's opinion...

Does everyone else get this reaction from their JW family when discussing objections to the religion?
by jambon1 inwhen pointing out my objections to the jw religion with my wife, i have noticed a worrying trend which even after 3 or 4 years shows no sign of relenting.. after speaking calmly for an hour or so and logically pointing out my objections, my wife starts to put forward outrageous assertations about my points.
for instance, if i am refering to the fact that disfellowshipping is a form of extreem punishment & i mention the terrible effects that being d/f'd can have on people, she will eventually retort with something like "so what you are saying is that we should tolerate paedophiles, rapists & thieves in the organisation then?".
of course, i've never at any point said anything of the sort.. or if i have been overly critical of the amount of control the society wants over peoples lives, she would reply "so what you are saying is that we should all just go out & do what we want, get drunk & live an immoral life?

It is as if she misses the whole point of my reasonable objections & just replies with extreem examples rather than take on board the point of what I am saying.
And the reason it is dangerous in my opinion is that it makes logical conversation based on fact almost impossible. The genuine points that I make are just cast aside and not discussed.
This is how they are programmed to think. Any point that begins to cause them to feel uncomfortable will trigger this cult response.
It is a self defence mechanism designed to end the conversation in such a way, that in their perverted view makes them 'win' the argument and preserves their delusion. The more extreme their example, the more outrageous their claim, the more they will believe it. Personally, I think that no reasoning will get through until they, themselves, begin to doubt over something personal to them, something they figure out for themselves. Reasoning doesn't work, because they don't know how to reason without triggering these self-defense mechanisms.

WTF!! They haven't buried Michael Jackson yet?
by Gregor inholy moly.
it's been over two months!
i suppose they have decided to pour the big bucket of stinky soup in the ground.

They'll bury him eventually, once they can't make any more money off this whole disgusting spectacle.
Rival relatives, media frenzy, lots and lots of lawyers making money arguing who gets what, a 'greedy corporate sponsor' that holds a chunk of his catalog, experts being interviewed on the news and talk radio, exploitation of the 'poor little rich kids', washed up performers getting the spotlight again due to their relationship with the family, you know how it goes... there's big money to be made off of the death of a celebrity, especially a weird one.

Getting Offended: A Method of Control
by daniel-p ini was always frustrated with how much counsel and advice was given at the kingdom hall on how not to offend others.
it seemed like complete immunity was given to the person getting offended.
they were never counselled to just mind their own business, but if anyone had any reason to be offended about something you had done, the elders, or that person, would be sure to let you know about it.. most of the time it was nobody's business.
-
jeanniebeanz
Being offended gives the offended party official 'victim' status. As a victim, you can get away with murder in this world. Professional victims pout, complain, cry and by doing so bully their way out of any responsibility for their actions... they can do no wrong. Bunch of passive agressive mamby pamby crybabies that cannot even take responsibility for their own feelings let alone constructive criticism. Heaven forbid you try to reason with professional victims who believe themself chosen by God himself! Pure delusion...
Good grief... your hair was too short so they removed you? omg... unbelievable!

If Shunning Didn't Exist, Would JW's Exist In Their Current Form?
by AllTimeJeff inin my opinion, this is the crux of the matter where ex jw's are concerned.. so many religions have disagreements with their members.
but you can disagree, research, question, and leave if that is your wish.
you may receive some sanction depending on the religion, but no shunning is required in the major faith's and religions of christendom.
-
jeanniebeanz
If shunning were not practiced, I personally know three congregations that would cease to exist. People stay because they love their families, not out of love of Jah or the Watchtower Publishing Corporation. Many witnesses view the Jah as represented by the org as an evil and vindictive diety who should be abandoned and agree that the witnesses, for all their protestations to the contrary, do not place enough emphasis on Christ yet claim to be Christian. They are aware of the lack of compassion and love in the org and hate it's hypocrisy. There are those who are sincere in their beliefs and would stay, but I'd guess that within 10 years the org would cease to exist in it's present form and new leadership would be demanded.

Gardening in Houston
by jeanniebeanz indoes anyone else garden along the gulf coast?
i used to be able to grow just about anything in northern cali, but since moving to houston, i have a devil of a time with my garden and flower beds.
they seem to be plagued with everything from insects to fungus and the amount of chemical solutions that the garden centers here recommend would poison the entire planet to the nth generation.

Thanks, Blodie. I appreciate the info.
If anyone else struggles to grow things here in Houston and has some first hand tips, I'd appreciate those immensely!

If you have any recommendations for varieties of plants and flowers not susceptible to these pernicious maladies, your input would be most appreciated. I would especially appreciate a recommendation for a good tomato variety!
Thanks!

I was also pretty young... my first doubts came up after listening to a member of the 'anointed' (and a CO at that) in a car group one morning picking out his 'after armageddon' house while 'witnessing' in a wealthy section of Redwook Valley. This was promptly followed by his jokes about having to kick the rotting corpse of it's former occupants out of the way before taking ownership of the property. As we drove away, I remember seeing the kids playing in the yard and the image of the children, only my age, laying rotting with their parents in the yard horrified me. I stared at him for the rest of the morning like he was the devil himself and never trusted another CO again.
I must have been about 10 or so...
