Fleaman ... I was talking about the US particularly .... but I'm not saying it doesn't happen to others as well in other racial circles. In the US I have certainly had people of other races prejudge me because I am a white American male.

Hey, but at least they're not prejudiced.
ANyone else have some great experience dealing with the subtle and not-so-subtle congregation racism?

144,000
by TIMBOB inthis is not so much a question as it is to make sure that i am thinking correctly.
the witnesses believe that 144,000 would rule as kings and priests in heaven and the end would not come until all of the 144,000 were in heaven, correct?
so, if this were the case and the witnesses kept a census of how many partook each year and are still doing that today, that means that back in the early 1900s they must of known that all 144,000 were not yet in heaven.

Eclipse is right. After they came up with the concept of 144,000 and later the great crowd (when the numbers of JWs grew over 144,000) it was proclaimed they would be whisked away to heaven at Armageddon if any were still alive.
But you have to remember they didn't believe in two groups at the time - they only believed in one group of people up until the numbers of JWs grew over 144000 and the end still hadn't come. Back in the early 1930's Rutherford anticipated rapid growth of the organization and visualized the membership rising beyond 144,000. This would complicate the original doctrine of only 144,000 people being candidates for citizenship in heaven. They had to come up with some sort of explanation - which is where they strayed from Jesus teaching of "one group, one faith" and made two classes of Christians. In 1935 at the District Convention Rutherford announced that anyone becoming a JW today would compose an Earthly Class.(excerpted from MacGregor Ministries)
So regarding why they predicted the end? Well they still had less than 144,000 total witnesses at the time. ANd they figured that other Bible Students throughout history since 33CE made up the difference. So predicting the end in 1914, 1918, 1925, 1935, 1941,1975,2034 etc is really nothing more than them speculating and keeping the "carrot" in front of people's noses.

GOD IS NOT GREAT - Christopher Hitchens
by Dansk inapologies if someone has covered this already, but i'm a third of the way through this marvellous book which i'm enjoying more than richard dawkin's the god delusion.
the full title of hitchens' book is god is not great - the case against religion.
it pulls no punches and is extremely well written.

I'm about a quarter of the way thru the book right now (Freedomloverr got it for me for Father's Day). I have been a Hitchens fan for a bit now because I enjoy his verbal dialogue on TV. He says things - even snobby literary things - in ways that most regular people can understand. The only thing I disagree with is his current stance on Iraq, but the major points about religion in it so far are spot on. -ithinkisee

"Organization will hinder all growth...."
by bob1999 inso who said this?
"for when the power of organization is once felt, it will soon be used to frown down and hinder all growth in grace and knowledge, and to suppress all teaching and teachers not in harmony with the errors and bondage of said unions.
the only union and bondage which god has ever authorized in his children, is the union between each individual and christ the head....."

NEW policy! NO LIT for EX-JWs!
by MinisterAmos init's official; they read the letter tonight that puts forth the new procedure.
if you find an expelled person in the field or are studying with one, you are no longer permitted to give them lit.
presumably the elders make a decision if an expelled one is regularly attending meetings, but only they can give them lit.

The Bible Says that Jesus is God - Definately
by Sirona ini am not a bible believer.
i have a question for those of you who are bible believers.
if you believe that jesus is not god, how do you justify the following:.
-
ithinkisee
If I were to believe the bible I would believe that Jesus is God. It's pretty plainly stated throughout scripture. The Early Church Fathers also emphasized it rather clearly.
But I don't believe the bible.
The only evidence that he is God appears in the Bible. If you look at the politics and drama behind putting the bible together over almost a 400 year period, you will see the Bible itself is not real evidence. Instead it was a hotly contested debate about what anonymous books to include, with a desire to control the masses with a state religion.
This is not proof Jesus is God, my friend.
