why are the jah jireh homes such a nice little earner at a time when retirement homes are struggling so badly in the uk?.

This doesnt surprise me in the slightest; before it obtained charitable status it was a private business; he changed it to a charity for publicity purposes and to no doubt boost revenues from potential residents. Previously though, if you couldnt afford the fees you didnt get in - it was just like a normal private residential home but serving a niche market. Hardly a charity!

Personally I dont mind anybody making profit but its the double standards I object to. He used to dupe his staff into working overtime suggesting it was a greater ministry!!!

He has no doubt taken a leaf out of the WTBTS book and thought there must be some mileage in the charity and PR business.

why does the wtbts not have to publish full details of its accounts, financial dealings, and multi business schemes?

are all their little business tax free?.

do women bethelites get paid the same allowance as men bethelites?.

It does seem that there has been a considerable drop in turnover for our publishing conglomerate...quite telling really!

What might be interesting to know is that the society in the UK has to submit full accounts for their UK operations. I last looked at their 2003 accounts and they made interesting reading.

Anyone been to Barcelona????

i'm off to barcelona in a month's time and wondered if any of you have been and could recommend hotels, restaurants, areas to visit etc?

I have to disagree with Lowden on this, Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities I have visited, although admittedly I havent yet been to Florence or Venice.

I went nearly two years ago and loved every minute of it.

One way you can get to see all the sights is by taking a bus tour round the whole city; they are really frequent and take you round all the main tourist attractions (as well as a few not so well known ones too); its about £20 for a two day pass but well worth it. You can get off the bus at any time and simply wait for the next one to come when you have finished seeing whatever it is you wanted to see. It makes for a great day out sight seeing!

La Ramblas is amazing for its street theatre, local stalls, and cafes where you can watch the world go by. Personally speaking I think you get just as many pickpockets in London and as long as you are vigilant you shouldnt have a problem. There is a problem with begging and they can be quite aggressive but if they dont go away after a polite request or do not accept what ever small offering you have given them, they seem to understand 'F**k off' particularly well.

Gaudi's cathedral is certainly a highlight and once you have seen it you will start to see his influence on architecture right throughout the whole city; you must also go and see the gothic quarter of the city (its apparently the oldest) but its beautiful and full of bars and restaurants and not badly priced either.

If you want a decent meal (and prepared to pay for it) go to the harbour which is at the bottom of La Ramblas and there is a selection of great seafood restaurants where the service is excellent.

Easyjet have a number of excellent hotels in their selection- whatever arrangements you make, enjoy!

I remember these times well.

I think the society realised by having such a well documented and hardened stance on education they decided to simply lessen the reins a little; the purpose of this was to avoid criticism from outsiders and for the newly indoctrinated - no other purpose.

The stance has not changed in the slightest although their methods of educating their members on this stance have become more subtle; its not written down as overtly as previously but through the platforms, assemblies, and conventions the message is exactly the same; DONT GET A HIGHER EDUCATION, SELL OUR BOOKS INSTEAD!

when i think back, i loved being a cocktail waitress.. all i had to do is put on a short skirt prance around like i knew what i was doing and get paid for it.

Worst Job: When I was really young and before I began my predestined job as an apprentice joiner, I had to work in a chicken factory (where they slaughtered chickens on one site and cooked them on another). My job was to work on the production line and ensure meat went into the machine properly (YAWN) - apparently if I had played my cards right I couldve been a supervisor by now and be earning just over minimum wage!! I was treated like shit by fuckwit supervisors who had no brain cells between them and who also didnt like my outspoken manner too much. Needless to say I didnt last long and was entirely relieved to start my apprenticeship.

Best Job: Its the job I do now. I was ill suited to the construction industry and could always work better with my brain rather than my hands - but you know what it is like when you are a dub, they have a vested interest in ensuring you do not live upto your capabilities and I suffered two years in the cold and wet doing a job I simply was no good at.

I always was interested in the law and when I left the dubs I began to pursue the law as my career; I work in litigation (which suits my outspoken personality) and I specialise in resolving employment disputes with a particular emphasis on discrimination. I am extremely proud of my work and enjoy every aspect.

How Well Does the Watchtower Educate?

how well does the watchtower educate?admittedly, my opinion about the watchtower is that it trained.

and educated individuals wellin particular when it came .

to reading and public speaking.. education or propaganda?

Dont you know that by reading all the Watchtower's and Awake's and all the publications the society publish you would have the equivalent of a university degree and that you will be more educated than most theologians?

I remember someone actually saying this to me once, can you believe it?

Is the Watchtower beginning to lose its grip on its members?

i have seen a counsellor on and off since leaving watchtower land.

she has made efforts to find out more about jehovah's witnesses.. we were discussing why my jw family (not my husbands' they shun us as if we smell bad!!!!

) are beginning to spend more time with us.

JWs can take the information as they want. If the WTBTS gives itself 'wriggle room' in its orders, then the R and F will also be able to take advantage of the 'wriggle room'. They will have to depend on word of mouth to control their slaves as they dare not write down any instructions any more in case it comes back to bite them.

Exactly, they have become more reluctant to reduce to writing any real policy which involves controversy and potential legal issues; also too, they must realise historically what damage their own written words have done, dare I mention 'Quotes'! No they prefer to rely mainly upon word of mouth to control their members thus avoiding being held to ransom or embarassed by their own publications. The WTS are masters at hiding behind unwritten rules, copyright laws when rules and doctrines are reduced to writing and their own members guilt.

Is the Watchtower beginning to lose its grip on its members?

A friend of mine last night sent a text to say that her JW parents were no longer shunning her which I know is excellent news. Her mother (who was the worst in terms of shunning) has invited her to stay and spend quality time with her. They have talked about so called spiritual things and her mum has agreed to disagree, it certainly appears that the grip the WTS has on her is lessening and that blood is thicker than water for some JWs.

I also take Crumpets point too in that there will always be fundamentalists and people who ignore their own parental instincts, perhaps because they believe 'the heart is treacherous' and that it is 'Jehovahs will' that people ignore their feelings, conscience and sense of morality. After a number of years of ignoring these, it becomes easier and more difficult to distinguish between what is right and clearly wrong. When they are challenged on such issues their only defence is to dig their heels in and delude themselves that they are 'remaining faithful' when in reality they are metaphorically holding their hands up to their ears screaming, 'I am not listening, I am not listening'!

It begs the question as to how loud this voice has to be before they will sit up and listen; for some the noise gets too much and they have no option but to hear and put things right but for others, the noise can be thunderous and yet they are deaf to anything their hearts and minds say.

The WTBTS has a lot to answer for in this regard.
